West Nile Virus and Other Nationally Notifiable Arboviral Diseases - United States, 2024.

In the United States, arthropodborne viruses (arboviruses) are primarily transmitted by infected mosquitoes or ticks; rarely, they can be transmitted through blood transfusion or organ transplantation. Whereas a majority of arboviral infections are asymptomatic, symptomatic infections range from mild febrile illness to severe neuroinvasive disease. This report summarizes data for nationally notifiable domestic arboviral diseases with illness onset in 2024. Forty-eight states and the District of Columbia reported 1,955 arboviral disease cases, including 189 (10%) deaths. Although the number of

When Access Is Not Enough: The Role of Utilization Barriers in Nutrition Security and Cardiometabolic Risk.

Background: Food and nutrition security are key social determinants of cardiometabolic health. While food security reflects access to sufficient food, nutrition security incorporates the quality, consistency, and usability of food that supports long-term health. However, few studies have examined how household-level barriers to food utilization shape these relationships. Objective: This study assessed whether tangible (e.g., equipment, storage) and intangible (e.g., time, knowledge) food utilization barriers modify the associations between food and nutrition security and cardiometabolic outcom

Emerging adulthood, socioemotional variables and mental health in Spanish university students.

BACKGROUND: This study responds to an important research gap around the impact of socioemotional variables and mental health on young emerging adults in the Spanish university context. Although previous research has explored these dynamics in international populations, there is limited knowledge about how these interactions manifest in the Mediterranean cultural model of transition to adulthood, characterised by distinctive socioeconomic and familial factors. This paper not only describes the prevalence of symptoms of psychological distress, but also identifies protective (social support and e

Lipoxin A4 Regulates M2 Macrophage-Derived Exosomal miR-25-5p to Protect Cell Pyroptosis in Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia.

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) involves macrophage-driven immunoinflammation, while macrophage-derived exosomes act as key extracellular vehicles linking macrophage-driven inflammation with tissue injury. Emerging evidence suggests that Lipoxin A4 (LXA4) modulates macrophage immune responses. However, the precise role of LXA4 in regulating macrophage function in BPD and its underlying mechanisms remains unclear. Neonatal rats were exposed to 85% hyperoxia to establish a BPD model. LXA4 or M2-polarized macrophage-derived exosomes (M2-exo) were injected intraperitoneally, and pulmonary inflamm

Potential Protective Effect of Statins against High-Grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesions in Women with Metabolic Comorbidities.

BACKGROUND: Although human papillomavirus vaccination and Papanicolaou screening have advanced cervical cancer prevention, high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL) remain common, particularly among individuals with metabolic comorbidities such as diabetes and hypercholesterolemia. Statins, commonly used for lipid control, possess anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative properties that may offer protective effects against cervical dysplasia. We explored the association between statin use and lesion grade in a population of patients with dysplasia and whether effects vary by comorbidit
