Although the etiology underlying scar formation is not well understood, previous studies revealed that endothelial cells play a role in the pathogenesis of scar development. Recently, the authors developed a reliable technique to obtain endothelial cells from hypertrophic scars that involved separation of cells from the scar tissue matrix and isolation from other cell types. Using phase-contract and electron microscopy, the cells were observed to have a characteristic morphology consistent with cells of endothelial origin. The cells were further characterized as endothelial cells by assessment

Focal metatarsal sinus tracts ('fistulation') are, to the authors knowledge, reported for the first time in a Weimaraner. The six-year-old, entire male had a five-month history of two symmetrical, well-demarcated sinuses on the plantar aspect of each metatarsus. The area surrounding each pair of sinuses was slightly fluctuant and a serosanguineous discharge could be expressed. Cytological examination of the discharge was characteristic of pyogranulomatous inflammation. Bacterial culture showed the material to be sterile. Examination of a skin biopsy revealed a severe inflammatory reaction invo

Octomitus intestinalis is a diplomonad flagellate inhabiting the digestive tract of rodents and amphibians. Octomitus is of evolutionary interest because, based on ultrastructural characteristics, it is thought to be closely related to the morphologically derived genus Giardia, and together they have been proposed to make up the Giardiinae. In molecular trees of diplomonads, Giardia is the deepest branching lineage, so identifying a sister group to Giardia that is less derived would be informative. Octomitus is a logical candidate for this position, but unfortunately there are no molecular dat

Laminopathies are a group of genetic disorders caused by LMNA mutations; they include muscular dystrophies, lipodystrophies, and progeroid syndromes. We identified a novel heterozygous LMNA mutation, L59R, in a patient with the general appearance of mandibuloacral dysplasia and progeroid features. Examination of the nuclei of dermal fibroblasts revealed the irregular morphology characteristic of LMNA mutant cells. The nuclear morphological abnormalities of LMNA mutant lymphoblastoid cell lines were less prominent compared to those of primary fibroblasts. Since it has been reported that progero

Cell death after stroke involves apoptotic, autophagocytic and necrotic mechanisms which may cause the release of cytosolic proteins to the extracellular space. Aldolase C (AldC) is the brain specific isoform of the glycolytic enzyme fructose-1,6-bisphosphate aldolase. According to its characteristic striped expression pattern in the adult cerebellum AldC is also termed zebrin II. Here, we demonstrate release of AldC into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) after stroke in vivo. Studies with cell cultures confirmed that AldC is released to the extracellular space after hypoxia. Moreover, addition of

Yersiniosis was prevalent among a caprine herd during the late autumn of 2003 in Iwate Prefecture, Japan. The disease affected 29 of about 100 lactating goats, but not dried or nonparous goats, mature male goats or kids. Four animals died within an epidemic period of 20 days. Affected animals developed decreased milk production with subsequent watery diarrhea, neutrophilia with increased band forms and multiple microabscesses characteristic of yersiniosis in the intestinal mucosa from the jejunum to caecum as well as in the mesenteric lymph nodes. Y. pseudotuberculosis serotype III was isolate

Efforts to implement workplace ergonomic programs aimed at reducing the burden of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSD) have to address multiple physical and psychosocial aspects of work environments yet often contextual factors limit their success. We describe the processes involved in an ergonomic program to reduce neck and upper limb WMSDs at a large Canadian newspaper. Using qualitative data collection and analysis methods, we illustrate the impact of key contextual characteristics of: (1) the program (management commitment, union involvement, experience and skill of program leader

BACKGROUND/METHODS: We compared the diagnostic yield of a real time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples with conventional microbiological techniques for the diagnosis of neurobrucellosis. Following amplification of a 223 bp sequence specific for Brucella genus, melting curve analysis was performed to verify the specificity of the PCR products.
RESULTS: All six patients with neurobrucellosis (three meningitis and three meningoencephalitis) had a positive real time PCR assay, whereas CSF cultures and Wright seroagglutination tests were positive in only two

We present a case of Reiter syndrome (RS) associated with Terry nail in a 32-year-old male patient who also had subungual keratosis and onycholysis. The case had all the characteristic findings of complete RS including urethritis, conjunctivitis, arthritis and skin lesions, and based on these findings a clinical diagnosis was established. The patient complained of milky-white coloured leakage that was more frequent in the mornings, and dysuria. Urinary analysis revealed leucocytes and erythrocytes. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) values were high. The case was

The clinical and biological characteristics of adult bacterial meningitis are usually unequivocal, but more subtle clinical presentations can be observed. A 24-year-old woman was admitted with fever and abdominal discomfort, which had been developing for 24 hours. There were no meningeal signs, but a transient cutaneous rash was observed on admission. A clear CSF was obtained showing no cytological or biochemical abnormality. Ceftriaxone 2 g was administrated intravenously. In the following hours of admission, a frank meningeal syndrome with purpura appeared, leading to a second lumbar punctur

Over the last few years, new Malassezia species have been found regularly in Japanese subjects. We isolated another new Malassezia species from a Japanese patient with seborrheic dermatitis (SD), and named it M. yamatoensis. In its physiological characteristics and the utilization of Tween by M. yamatoensis is similar to that of M. furfur and M. dermatis. It is distinguished by its growth temperature. To examine the distribution of the microorganism in the skin of patients with SD and atopic dermatitis (AD), and healthy subjects, we applied transparent dressings to the skin, and detected M. ya

Despite the increasing recognition of the importance of anger as a key aspect of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the presence of anger-induced panic attacks has been understudied in traumatized groups. The present investigation determines the prevalence of anger-associated panic attacks among Cambodian refugees suffering from PTSD. Specific characteristics of these episodes that were examined included frequency, symptoms, and cognitions (in particular, fear of death from bodily dysfunction). In a survey of 100 Khmer patients suffering PTSD, 58% reported anger-associated panic attacks in

OBJECTIVE: To determine the characteristics of febrile full term infants during the first days of life, and to discover the rate of serious bacterial infections among low risk neonates with systemic fever.
DESIGN: A retrospective case-control study of 122 cases and 122 controls in a single institution.
RESULTS: Weight loss, breast feeding, caesarean section delivery, and high birth weight were found to be the most significant predictors of developing fever during the first days of life. Of the 122 patients in the study group, only one had a serious bacterial infection (a positive urine cultu

We diagnosed Pallister-Mosaic syndrome (PMS) in a 4-month-old female infant. In addition to the presence of non-specific anomalies, involving anorectal, finger and ear anomalies, characteristic cranio-facial features and irregular skin lesions that appeared after age 2 months suggested the possibility of genetic mosaicism, PMS in particular. Fluorescence in situ hybridization technique revealed an extra copy of chromosome 12p; i (12p) in 30% of cultured skin fibroblasts. When focal skin lesions accompany neurodevelopmental disabilities in early infancy, genetic analysis for mosaicism should be

Fungal infections of the skin and deeper tissues of the periorbital region are quite rare. We report a case of a localized, deep periorbital necrotizing Fusarium infection in an otherwise healthy, elderly lady. Since the clinical features and histopathological findings of Fusarium infection are by no means characteristic, the definitive diagnosis was achieved with the help of microbiological examination of cultured organisms. A combined medical and surgical therapy led to adequate control of infection. To conclude, localized, deep periorbital necrotizing soft tissue infection by Fusarium in an

Clinical and laboratory aspects of the infections caused by Exophiala species are reviewed with regard to its epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment. Exophiala is a genus of dematiaceous hyphomycetes whose taxonomy and nomenclature undergo constant revision. Exophiala species are widely distributed in nature, and they are uncommon human pathogens. In recent years it appears to have increased its frequency as a cause of human infections, mainly in immunocompromised patients. They have been associated with phaeohyphomycosis, chromoblastomycosis, eumycotic mycetoma and disseminated infection. The

Infections may lead to a multitude of pathological skin alterations, and represent the most common diseases in pediatric dermatology. A prerequisite for successful treatment is an accurate diagnosis based on the medical history, clinical presentation and the culture of pathogens. Of importance among the bacterial skin diseases in pediatrics are impetigo, scarlet fever, borreliosis and cat-scratch fever. Dermatophytoses caused by Trichophyton or species of Microsporum affect either hair-bearing skin (scalp) (tinea capitis) or non-hair-bearing skin of the face, trunk, neck and limbs (tinea corpo

A 74-year-old woman was admitted for further examination because of an abnormal nodular shadow and thickening of the bronchovascular bundle in the left upper lobe on chest radiography and CT. The findings from a transbronchial biopsy specimen were not conclusive. A thoracoscopic lung biopsy specimen revealed a fungal infection, and partial resection of S1 + 2 of the left upper lobe was carried out. In the dilated bronchus, mucus of high viscosity was seen. Lymphocytes and plasma cells had infiltrated into the bronchioles and alveoli. Fungus was cultured from the mucus, and the morphological ch

BACKGROUND: Autoantibodies that are characteristic of autoimmune bullous diseases (AIBDs) can be detected by immunoblot assay using epidermal or dermal extracts. However, none of the substrates obtained by ordinary methods seems to contain a sufficient amount of all of the autoantigens involved in AIBDs, and diagnosis may require the use of several different substrates.
OBJECTIVES: To examine the potential of A431 cell extracts as a substrate for immunoblotting.
METHODS: Fourteen sera obtained from patients with major AIBDs (pemphigus vulgaris, pemphigus foliaceus, paraneoplastic pemphigus,

Possible correlations were investigated between the clinical and urodynamic findings in 77 neutered female dogs with urinary incontinence refractory to standard medical management. The clinical data used in the analysis were age, bodyweight, breed, the characteristics of the dribbling of urine and whether it developed before or after neutering, the type of response to previous treatments, signs of polyuria/polydipsia, and the results of urinalysis and culture. In 50 of the dogs, a standardised contrast radiographic examination was made to locate the neck of the bladder and to assess the morpho
