Amylin is a 37 amino acid peptide produced mainly by beta-cells of the endocrine pancreas. Human amylin has 43% homology with human calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and 13% homology with human calcitonin (CT). A study was made of the status of the central nervous system in 91 neonates born to mothers with a history of threatened abortion. Using consecutive Wald's analysis the role was estimated of the clinical characteristics of pregnancy and delivery, and of the content of hormones (estriol, estradiol, progesterone, testosterone) as well as of cyclic adenosine-3,5-monophosphate, detected in the future mother over pregnancy, in the genesis of neurological disorders in the child.

The present experiments examined the effects of progesterone on adrenergic receptor coupling to adenylate cyclase in hypothalamic and preoptic area slices by monitoring norepinephrine (NE)-stimulated increases in cAMP accumulation. Progesterone treatment of estrogen-primed rats decreased NE-induced slice cAMP accumulation. Adenosine and its synthetic analogues are known to affect many leukocyte functions, in some cases by binding to specific cell surface receptors coupled to adenylate cyclase. In this study, adenosine receptors were demonstrated on normal rabbit alveolar macrophages by examining specific binding of tritiated 5-N-ethylcarboxamide adenosine (NECA) to intact cells. Monolayer cultures of the pancreas of the neonatal rat were maintained in TCM 199 medium, supplemented with 5.5 mM glucose, with or without 5 mM 3-amino-3-deoxyglucose, and perifused to examine the changes which occurred in the insulin secretory response during culture. On day 0, B cells showed a monophasic insulin secretion in response to 16.7 mM glucose, whereas in the presence of 200 nM 12-o-tetradecanoyl phorbol-13-acetate, 40 microM lysophosphatidylcholine, 10 microM forskolin or 1 mM 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine, the same dose of glucose stimulated insulin secretion in a biphasic fashion.

The effects of prostaglandins (PGs) on the induction of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were investigated in osteoblastic clone MC3T3-E1 cells cultured in serum-free medium.
