BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by transcriptional alterations both in central and peripheral tissues. Therefore, the identification of a transcriptional signature in an accessible tissue can meaningfully complement current efforts in clinical biomarker development. Gene expression normalization represents an essential step in transcriptional signatures identification, and since many reference genes show altered expressions in several pathologies, the definition of stable genes in the desired tissue is required to allow correct result interpretati

OBJECTIVES: Sinonasal inverted papilloma (IP) is an uncommon benign tumour characterised by frequent recurrence and, in approximately 10% of cases, by neoplastic transformation. IP aetiology is unknown but human papillomavirus is detectable in about one quarter of tumours. As some occupational hazards have been reported to be possible risk factors for IP, the aim of this study was to assess risk for sinonasal IP associated with prior exposure to suspected occupational risk factors for sinonasal malignancies.
METHODS: Between 1996 and 2007, data on incident cases were collected from hospitals

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Little data are available regarding the frequencies of the blood group antigens other than ABO and RhD in the Indian population. Knowledge of the antigen frequencies is important to assess risk of antibody formation and to guide the probability of finding antigen-negative donor blood, which is especially useful when blood is required for a patient who has multiple red cell alloantibodies. This study was carried out to determine the frequencies of the D, C, c, E, e, K, k, Fy(a), Fy(b), Jk(a), Jk(b), M, N, S and s antigens in over 3,000 blood donors.

Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels are lower in obese patients with left ventricular failure than in their comparably ill, leaner counterparts. The effect of obesity on BNP in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is unknown. We reviewed our prospective PAH registry data collected from November 2001 to December 2007 for patients undergoing right heart catheterization who met the criteria for PAH and had the BNP level and body mass index determined at baseline. The median BNP level for the lean, overweight, and obese patients was 285 pg/ml (interquartile range 131 to 548), 315

Postmortem redistribution (PMR) is an accepted toxicological phenomenon that may affect the interpretation of postmortem blood concentrations. The extent of PMR is not well understood for some drugs. This report describes the PMR of selected substances resulting from the analysis of 149 cases comparing blood specimens taken at admission of the deceased to the mortuary and then at autopsy. Blood was collected in preserved tubes containing 1 % sodium fluoride/potassium oxalate. All cases were subject to a full autopsy and blood extracts were analyzed using a targeted screen by LC-MS/MS. 30 drug

BACKGROUND: Osteogenesis imperfecta is a heterogeneous genetic disorder characterized by bone fragility. Previous research suggests that impaired collagen network and abnormal mineralization affect bone tissue properties, however, little data is yet available to describe bone material properties in individuals with this disorder. Bone material properties have not been characterized in individuals with the most common form of osteogenesis imperfecta, type I.
METHODS: Bone tissue elastic modulus and hardness were measured by nanoindentation in eleven osteotomy specimens that were harvested from

BACKGROUND: Immunodeficiency in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) can be aggravated by haemodialysis (HD). This results in an increased incidence of reactivation of tuberculosis (TB) in HD patients. The tuberculin skin test to detect a latent TB infection (LTBI) has its limitations in these patients because of a high rate of false negative results due to anergy of T cells. Data on the influence of HD on the performance of interferon-gamma release assays are limited. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of HD on the performance of the QuantiFERON-TB Gold (QFT-G) assay in ESRD patients

Current evidence suggests that the genetic risk of breast cancer may be caused primarily by rare variants. However, while classification of protein-truncating mutations as deleterious is relatively straightforward, distinguishing as deleterious or neutral the large number of rare missense variants is a difficult on-going task. In this article, we present one approach to this problem, hierarchical statistical modeling of data observed in a case-control study of contralateral breast cancer (CBC) in which all the participants were genotyped for variants in BRCA1 and BRCA2. Hierarchical modeling p

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have shown that cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) plays an important role in tumor growth and neovascularization. However, COX-2 expression in vestibular schwannomas (VSs) has not been investigated.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the pattern of COX-2 expression in sporadic and neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2)-associated VSs and its relationship with tumor proliferation and microvessel density.
METHODS: Fifteen sporadic and 15 NF2-associated VSs were examined for COX-2 expression, microvessel density, and proliferation rate by immunohistochemical methods. Immunohistochemical scores wer

BACKGROUND: Methylation profiling of tumor suppressor gene (TSGs) promoters is quickly becoming a powerful diagnostic tool for the early detection, prognosis, and even prediction of clinical response to treatment. Few studies address this in salivary gland tumors (SGTs); hence the promoter methylation profile of various TSGs was quantitatively assessed in primary SGT tissue to determine if tumor-specific alterations could be detected.
METHODOLOGY: DNA isolated from 78 tumor and 17 normal parotid gland specimens was assayed for promoter methylation status of 19 TSGs by fluorescence-based, quan

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: The common bedbug Cimex lectularius Linnaeus 1758 (Hemiptera: Cimicidae) is a globally re-emerging pest of serious public health concern. We investigated bedbug infestation in randomly selected apartments in Gbajimba community in Guma Local Government area in Benue state, Nigeria.
METHODS: Beddings and furniture (bed frames, pillows, mattresses, cushion chairs, mats, mosquito nets and bamboo beds) were thoroughly inspected for bedbug infestation using the hand-picking technique. Data were analysed using chi- square analysis for differences in the infestation levels in

OBJECTIVE: Hypothalamic hypocretins (or orexins) regulate energy metabolism and arousal maintenance. Recent animal research suggests that hypocretins may also influence reward-related behaviors. In humans, the loss of hypocretin-containing neurons results in a major sleep-wake disorder called narcolepsy-cataplexy, which is associated with emotional disturbances. Here, we aim to test whether narcoleptic patients show an abnormal pattern of brain activity during reward processing.
METHODS: We used functional magnetic resonance imaging in 12 unmedicated patients with narcolepsy-cataplexy to meas

BACKGROUND: The analysis of "professional motivations", mainly through the possible crowding-out effects between extrinsic and intrinsic motivations, has become an issue of great concern in the economic literature. This paper aims at applying this topic to the healthcare professions where the proper scaling up of pay-for-performance (P4P) policies by public authorities is at stake.
METHODS: We used a panel of 528 self-employed general practitioners in the "Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur" region in France to provide an interpersonal statistical decomposition between extrinsic and intrinsic motivat

The etiology of childhood leukemia remains generally unknown, although risk models based on the Japanese A-bomb survivors imply that the dose accumulated from protracted exposure to low-level natural background ionizing radiation materially raises the risk of leukemia in children. In this paper a novel Monte Carlo score-test methodology is used to assess the statistical power of cohort, ecological and case-control study designs, using the linear low-dose part of the BEIR V model derived from the Japanese data. With 10 (or 20) years of follow-up of childhood leukemias in Great Britain, giving a

OBJECTIVE: It is known that the measurement of splenic length in routine clinical practice is a very good indicator of actual splenic size. Knowledge of the normal range of spleen size in the population being examined is a prerequisite. Racial differences in splenic length could result in incorrect interpretation of splenic measurements. The purpose of this study was to establish the range of spleen length in a young male Turkish population.
METHODS: A total of 2179 volunteers, healthy men aged 17-42 years, from the annual Army Reserve Officer Training Corps training camp at Manisa were inclu

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Loss to follow-up may bias the outcome assessments of clinical registries. In this study, we wanted to determine whether outcomes were different in responding and non-responding patients who were included in a clinical spine surgery registry, at two years of follow-up. In addition, we wanted to identify risk factors for failure to respond.
METHODS: 633 patients who were operated for degenerative disorders of the lumbar spine were followed for 2 years using a local clinical spine registry. Those who did not attend the clinic and those who did not answer a postal questio

As a key factor in endemic and epidemic dynamics, the geographical distribution of viruses has been frequently interpreted in the light of their genetic histories. Unfortunately, inference of historical dispersal or migration patterns of viruses has mainly been restricted to model-free heuristic approaches that provide little insight into the temporal setting of the spatial dynamics. The introduction of probabilistic models of evolution, however, offers unique opportunities to engage in this statistical endeavor. Here we introduce a Bayesian framework for inference, visualization and hypothesi
