Depressive rumination is correlated with brain responses during self-related processing.

BACKGROUND: Rumination, a tendency to focus on negative self-related thoughts, is a central symptom of depression. Studying the self-related aspect of such symptoms is challenging because of the need to distinguish self effects from the emotional content of task stimuli. This study employed an emotionally neutral self-related paradigm to investigate possible altered self-processing in depression and its link to rumination. METHODS: People with major depressive disorder (n = 25) and controls (n = 25) underwent task-based electro-encephalogram recording. We studied late event-related potentials

Toward the application of functional neuroimaging to individualized treatment for anxiety and depression.

Functional neuroimaging has led to significant gains in understanding the biological bases of anxiety and depressive disorders. However, the ability of functional neuroimaging to directly impact clinical practice is unclear. One important method by which neuroimaging could impact clinical care is to generate single patient level predictions that can guide clinical decision-making. The present review summarizes published functional neuroimaging studies of predictors of medication or psychotherapy outcome in major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), posttraumatic stress dis

The Gut-Brain Axis in Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD): Why the Gut Shapes Behavior, Depression, and Self-Injurious Behavior in Children with Prenatal Alcohol Exposure-A Narrative Review with a Proposal for Staged Nutritional and Microbiological Intervention.

Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) leads to fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), the most common preventable cause of neurodevelopmental impairment. The classical narrative attributes the clinical picture of FASD exclusively to direct ethanol-induced brain injury. In the present review, we argue that this perspective is incomplete and leads to diagnostic errors, most often to the misdiagnosis of ADHD in children who in fact have FASD. We propose that, alongside the direct neurotoxicity of ethanol, an important and clinically under-recognized complementary mechanism is gut-brain axis dysfunctio

Gene × environment effects of serotonin transporter, dopamine receptor D4, and monoamine oxidase A genes with contextual and parenting risk factors on symptoms of oppositional defiant disorder, anxiety, and depression in a community sample of 4-year-old children.

Genetic factors can play a key role in the multiple level of analyses approach to understanding the development of child psychopathology. The present study examined gene-environment correlations and gene × environment interactions for polymorphisms of three target genes, the serotonin transporter gene, the D4 dopamine receptor gene, and the monoamine oxidase A gene in relation to symptoms of anxiety, depression, and oppositional behavior. Saliva samples were collected from 175 non-Hispanic White, 4-year-old children. Psychosocial risk factors included socioeconomic status, life stress, caretak

Bipolar depression: the role of atypical antipsychotics.

Acute manic episodes in bipolar disorder require rapid and effective relief. Bipolar depression is a major component of the bipolar disorder spectrum. Existing treatment options for bipolar depression include lithium, lamotrigine and conventional antidepressants. However, lithium is more effective in treating mania or hypomania than depression, both acutely and prophylactically, lamotrigine has only been demonstrated to be effective in one adequately powered study in acute bipolar I depression, and conventional antidepressants have been associated with emergent mania and cycle acceleration. Anxious distress in people with major depressive episodes: a cross-sectional analysis of clinical correlates.

OBJECTIVE: Most people with major depressive episodes meet the criteria for the anxious distress (AD) specifier defined by DSM-5 as the presence of symptoms such as feelings of tension, restlessness, difficulty concentrating, and fear that something awful may happen. This cross-sectional study was aimed at identifying clinical correlates of AD in people with unipolar or bipolar depression. METHODS: Inpatients with a current major depressive episode were included. Data on socio-demographic and clinical variables were collected. The SCID-5 was used to diagnose depressive episodes and relevant s

Depressive symptoms among general medical patients: prevalence and one-year outcome.

Using prospective data from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Epidemiologic Catchment Area surveys, we examined the relationship of depressive symptoms among patients seen by general medical practitioners, with the subsequent development of major depressive disorder. The goals of the analysis were to determine 1) the 1-year psychiatric status of these individuals, and 2) to evaluate factors associated with the risk of major depressive disorder (MDD) or dysthymia. Between 1980 and 1984, collaborators of the NIMH Epidemiologic Catchment Area program recruited 18,571 adult participan

Role of palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) in depression: Translational evidence: Special Section on "Translational and Neuroscience Studies in Affective Disorders". Section Editor, Maria Nobile MD, PhD. This Section of JAD focuses on the relevance of translational and neuroscience studies in providing a better understanding of the neural basis of affective disorders. The main aim is to briefly summaries relevant research findings in clinical neuroscience with particular regards to specific innovative topics in mood and anxiety disorders.

BACKGROUND: Antidepressants have a low rate of response paired with a delayed onset of action. Translational studies are thus seeking for novel targets for antidepressant drug development. Preclinical evidence has demonstrated that the endocannabinoid system plays an important role in mood and stress response, even if drugs targeting this system have not yet become available for clinical use. The dietary supplement N-Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) is a fatty acid amide belonging to the endocannabinoid system with potential antidepressant properties. METHODS: We performed a bibliographic search t

The prevalence and differential diagnosis of subclinical depressive syndromes in inpatients 60 years and older.

BACKGROUND: Depressive syndromes that do not comply with the diagnostic criteria for specific depressive disorders are designated as 'subclinical' or 'subsyndromal' depressive syndromes. Using our own data from a clinical study, this paper outlines the significance of subclinical depressive syndromes and demonstrates the problems of differentiating between depressive and subclinical depression (SD) syndromes and organic mood disorders especially in an elderly population with medical comorbidity. METHODS: Two hundred and sixty-two patients aged 60 years and older in a general hospital were inv

Potential involvement of the mitochondrial unfolded protein response in depressive-like symptoms in mice.

Many evidences strongly suggest that a mitochondrial deficit is implicated in major depression. A mitochondrial deficit leads to mitochondrial stress responses, including the mitochondrial unfolded protein response (UPRmt), which is associated with certain brain disorders such as spastic paraplegia and Parkinson's disease. However, there is no evidence regarding the relationship between depressive disorder and UPRmt. Mice treated with chronic restraint stress showed significant depressive-like behaviors in the tail suspension and forced swim tests, decreased oxygen consumption rate, and increa

Assessment of risk factors related to suicide attempts in patients with bipolar disorder.

We compared the characteristics of patients with bipolar disorder with and without a history of suicide attempts to identify the risk factors of suicide in this disorder. Among 212 patients with bipolar disorder, 44 (21.2%) patients had histories of suicide attempts. Suicide attempters were younger and more likely to be diagnosed with bipolar II. The variables that differentiated those who did from those who did not attempt suicide included age at first contact, lifetime history of antidepressant use, major depressive episode, mixed episode, auditory hallucinations, rapid cycling, the number o
