Effects of the Ketogenic Diet on Strength Performance in Trained Men and Women: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Ketogenic diets (KDs) are an alternative to improve strength performance and body composition in resistance training participants. The objective of this review and meta-analysis is to verify whether a ketogenic diet produces an increase in the strength of resistance-trained participants. We have evaluated the effect of the ketogenic diet in conjunction with resistance training on the strength levels in trained participants. Boolean algorithms from various databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science) were used. Meta-analyses were carried out, one on the 1-RM squat (SQ), with 106 trained parti

An open-label, randomized controlled trial to assess a ketogenic diet in critically ill patients with sepsis.

Patients with sepsis experience metabolic and immunologic dysfunction that may be amplified by standard carbohydrate-based nutrition. A ketogenic diet (KD) may offer an immunologically advantageous alternative, although clinical evidence is limited. We conducted a single-center, open-label, randomized controlled trial to assess whether a KD could induce stable ketosis in critically ill patients with sepsis. Secondary outcomes included assessment of feasibility and safety of KD, as well as explorative analysis of clinical and immunological characteristics. Forty critically ill adults were rando

The effects of iron deficient and high iron diets on SARS-CoV-2 lung infection and disease.

INTRODUCTION: The severity of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is often dictated by a range of comorbidities. A considerable literature suggests iron deficiency and iron overload may contribute to increased infection, inflammation and disease severity, although direct causal relationships have been difficult to establish. METHODS: Here we generate iron deficient and iron loaded C57BL/6 J mice by feeding standard low and high iron diets, with mice on a normal iron diet representing controls. All mice were infected wi

The Effect of Diet Composition on the Post-operative Outcomes of Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass in Mice.

PURPOSE: Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) leads to the improvement of many obesity-associated conditions. The degree to which post-operative macronutrient composition contributes to metabolic improvement after RYGB is understudied. METHODS: A mouse model of RYGB was used to examine the effects of diet on the post-operative outcomes of RYGB. Obese mice underwent either Sham or RYGB surgery and were administered either chow or HFD and then monitored for an additional 8 weeks. RESULTS: After RYGB, reductions to body weight, fat mass, and lean mass were similar regardless of diet. RYGB and HFD we

The effect of solid food diet therapies on the induction and maintenance of remission in Crohn's disease: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The efficacy of highly restrictive dietary therapies such as exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN) in the induction of remission in Crohn's disease (CD) are well established, however, ongoing issues exist with its poor palatability, restrictions, and adherence. The primary aim of this review is to evaluate the current evidence for the efficacy of exclusively solid food diets on the induction and maintenance of clinical and biochemical remission in CD. Secondary aims include impact on endoscopic healing and quality of life. METHODS: A systematic review of all randomised controlled tria

Adult-onset erythrokeratodermia variabilis (EKV) triggered by pregnancy and crash dieting: A rare case report.

Erythrokeratodermia variabilis (EKV) is a rare inherited genodermatosis characterised by migratory and erythematous patches changing over the course of hours to days and fixed keratotic plaques. The disease begins mostly at birth or within the first year of life; it very rarely starts after childhood. We present here a sporadic case with adult onset EKV that was aggravated by pregnancy with spontaneous resolution, and later on, after crash diet more persistent patches and plaques appeared with no spontaneous resolution. The patient showed excellent response to systemic retinoids.

Effects of Tannin Supplementation in Diet on the Resistance to Ammonia Stress of Pacific White Shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei.

Tannin (TA), as a natural phenolic compound with strong antioxidant activity, has been used as a feed additive for various animals. In this study, we fed a diet containing 800 mg/kg of tannin on Litopenaeus vannamei for 56 days and then subjected to acute ammonia stress for 48 hr to investigate the effect of dietary tannin on the ammonia stress response of L. vannamei through transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis. The transcriptome analysis indicated that ammonia stress-induced differential expression of 4,185 genes, while tannin-fed shrimp only had 964 differentially expressed genes. Compar

An investigation of the presence and antimicrobial susceptibility of Enterobacteriaceae in raw and cooked kibble diets for dogs in the United Kingdom.

Raw meat diets (RMD) for dogs are an increasingly popular alternative pet food choice, however studies worldwide have demonstrated them to be contaminated with zoonotic and antimicrobial resistant (AMR) bacteria, including bacteria resistant to critically important antibiotics. Despite this, few data exist surrounding the presence of these bacteria in RMD in the United Kingdom. The present study aimed to identify the most commonly selected RMD and non-raw diets (NRMD) by United Kingdom dog owners. Additionally, it investigated the presence of AMR-Enterobacteriaceae in samples of pre-prepared R

The neutropenic diet and its impacts on clinical, nutritional, and lifestyle outcomes for people with cancer: a scoping review.

The neutropenic diet (ND) is often recommended to people with cancer to reduce infection risk despite recommendations of clinical guidelines advising against its use. While recent literature suggests the ND does not reduce infection risk, other outcomes related to health, nutrition, and lifestyle are unknown. The aim of this review is to systematically scope the literature on the ND in people with cancer for all outcomes related to clinical health, nutrition, and lifestyle. Scientific databases were systematically searched. Eligible studies were in English, people with any cancer type, consumi

A novel hepatocyte ketone production assay to help the selection of nutrients for the ketogenic diet treatment of epilepsy.

The classic ketogenic diet is an effective treatment option for drug-resistant epilepsy, but its high fat content challenges patient compliance. Optimizing liver ketone production guided by a method comparing substrates for their ketogenic potential may help to reduce the fat content of the diet without loss in ketosis induction. Here, we present a liver cell assay measuring the β-hydroxybutyrate (βHB) yield from fatty acid substrates. Even chain albumin-conjugated fatty acids comprising between 4 and 18 carbon atoms showed a sigmoidal concentration-βHB response curve (CRC) whereas acetate and

The effect of the modified Atkins diet and anti-seizure medications on lipid marker levels in adults with epilepsy.

OBJECTIVES: Some anti-seizure medications (ASMs) are known to induce liver enzymes and impact lipid values that include total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL), and triglyceride (TG). In addition, use of ketogenic diet therapies, including the modified Atkins diet (MAD), has also influenced lipids. Here, we explored the combined impact of enzyme inducing ASMs (EIASMs) and MAD on lipid values in adults with epilepsy. METHODS: Diet-naïve adults with epilepsy who began MAD were divided into three groups based on ASM use: EIASM

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances and bone mineral content in early adolescence: Modification by diet and physical activity.

BACKGROUND: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) exposures may negatively impact bone mineral accrual, but little is known about potential mitigators of this relation. We assessed whether associations of PFAS and their mixture with bone mineral content (BMC) in adolescence were modified by diet and physical activity. METHODS: We included 197 adolescents enrolled in a prospective pregnancy and birth cohort in Cincinnati, Ohio (2003-2006). At age 12 years, we collected serum for PFAS measurements and used dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry to measure BMC. We calculated dietary calcium intake

Assessing the effects of temperature, diet and threat conditions on defensive behaviour and venom regeneration in scorpion (Buthusatlantis).

Understanding animal's behaviour and adaptation in the face of threats and predators under different biotic and abiotic conditions is fundamental in ecology. In this study we examined defensive behaviour of Buthus atlantis scorpion in order to assess how various factors such as temperature, prey type, and threatening conditions influence stinging behaviour, venom usage and regeneration. Our study had revealed that stings frequency was significantly lower in cooler temperature compared to the medium and warm temperature. Threatening condition had no significant effect in medium and warmer tempe

Environmental determinants of venom variability in captive scorpions: A comprehensive analysis of diet, temperature, and humidity effects.

This study examines the effects of environmental conditions on venom production in four prevalent scorpion species in Morocco: Androctonus amoreuxi, Androctonus mauretanicus, Buthus mardochei, and Scorpio maurus. The research focuses on how climatic factors such as temperature, humidity, and diet-specifically mealworm consumption-affect physical parameters including size and weight, and ultimately venom yield. We conducted a comprehensive investigation involving the capture, acclimatization, and systematic venom extraction from 480 scorpions. Our findings indicate considerable variations in ve
