Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) is an effective means of achieving weight loss for adolescents and young adults (AYA) with obesity. Intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are not absolute contraindications for MBS treatment in AYA with obesity. We sought to determine whether a diagnosis of IDD is associated with weight loss after MBS. We conducted a retrospective chart review of patients ≤ 21 years who underwent MBS at a single institution, comparing outcomes among those with IDD and those without. A total of 103 patients were included. Nine were diagnosed with IDD preoperativ

Harel-Yoon syndrome (HAYOS) is a unique neurodevelopmental genetic disorder characterized by hypotonia, spasticity, intellectual disability, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and global developmental delay. It primarily results from mutations in the ATAD3A gene, pivotal for mitochondrial function. This report presents a 5-year-old girl with HAYOS harboring a de novo heterozygous variant c.1064G>A; (p.G355D) in ATAD3A. Her clinical profile includes delayed milestones, hypotonia, spastic quadriplegia, and ptosis. Notably, dermatologic anomalies such as hypopigmentation, café au lait macules, and frec

BACKGROUND: The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) offers a standardized international terminology to operationalize function management across multiple domains, but the summary score of the ICF qualifier scale provides limited information on the comparison of personal abilities and functioning difficulties.
OBJECTIVES: To enhance the interpretative power of the ICF-based Health-oriented Personal Evaluation for the community-dwelling older person (iHOPE-OP) scale through the implementation of the item response theory (IRT) modelling.

OBJECTIVE: Expanding on existing research suggesting that strategies to reduce prenatal anxiety can decrease functional disability (e.g., difficulties in performing everyday activities and social participation), we examined if this effect varied by type of anxiety-producing problem (i.e., having family concerns and relationship problems versus other problems) reported during pregnancy. Further, we explored if perceived social support mediated this relationship.
METHODS: We used longitudinal data on 310 anxious Pakistani women who received any psychosocial intervention sessions as part of a pr

BACKGROUND: SYNGAP1 variants are associated with varying degrees of intellectual disability (ID), developmental delay (DD), epilepsy, autism, and behavioural difficulties. These features may also be observed in other monogenic conditions. There is a need to systematically compare the characteristics of SYNGAP1 with other monogenic causes of ID and DD to identify features unique to the SYNAGP1 phenotype. We aimed to contrast the neurodevelopmental and behavioural phenotype of children with SYNGAP1-related ID (SYNGAP1-ID) to children with other monogenic conditions and a matched degree of ID.

IMPORTANCE: Neurodevelopmental disorders are associated with poor health and social outcomes. Population-based data on incidence, age at diagnosis, and demographic variations are essential to identify modifiable risk factors and inform the planning of services and interventions.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the incidence and timing of diagnosis of neurodevelopmental disorders during childhood in the US and to evaluate differences by population characteristics.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based cohort study used nationwide data on birth cohorts nested in the 2000-2014 Medicaid

The present study aimed to determine the magnitude of and risk factors for the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the international classification of functioning, disability and health (ICF) in patients with multiple system atrophy (PwMSA). The study was part of a cross-sectional, nationwide, multipurpose mail survey for Japanese PwMSA from October to December, 2020. The primary outcome was the impact of the early COVID-19 pandemic on ICF functioning, consisting of body function, activity, and participation. Age, sex, disease type, disease duration, and dwelling place were asked as participan

Classification is a hot topic in Paralympic sport, making the development of evidence-based and sport-specific classification systems mandatory. However, the development of measurements for exploring the relationships between the athletes' impairment and their activity limitation is a considerable scientific challenge in team Paralympic sport such as 7-side football (ie, CP Football). The aims of this study were 1) to describe the activity limitation and external match load (ML) differences among impairment profiles (FT) in international level footballers with cerebral palsy (CPFP) and 2) to a

OBJECTIVE: A rape victim may encounter professionals in both the health and the legal systems. Unanswered questions remain about clinical factors associated with a rape victim's ability to testify in court, and the quality of care offered to rape victims. The objectives of this study were thus to determine the clinical factors that are associated with a rape victim's ability to testify in court, as well as to undertake a preliminary exploration of the referral system between the court and the mental health services.
METHOD: A retrospective study was conducted of rape victims referred by the c

We compared the extent to which having an intellectual or developmental disability was associated with rates at which Iowa Medicaid-enrolled children ages 3 to 8 had first dental checkups after an initial dental examination. We hypothesized that these children would have later first dental checkups than would children without an intellectual or developmental disability. Findings suggest no significant difference in the time to first dental checkup for children by intellectual or developmental disability status. Those who took over 12 months to see a dentist for their initial dental examination

This article describes the neurologic presentations of children with mitochondrial disorders. The charts of 42 children with highly suspect mitochondrial disorders were reviewed. Thirty-seven children were diagnosed as having definite mitochondrial disorders based on a suggestive clinical presentation and at least one accepted criteria, while in five patients the diagnosis remained probable. All patients had nervous system involvement, but it was the presenting symptom in 28 of 42. Eighteen children had normal intelligence and 24 had mental retardation or developmental delay at the onset of th

The ability to recognize and respond appropriately to facial expressions of emotion is essential for interpersonal interaction. Individuals with mental retardation have problems not only in recognizing but also in accurately producing facial expressions of emotion. In Experiment 1, directed rehearsal was used to teach six boys with mild and moderate mental retardation to increase their ability to recognize facial expressions of emotion. In addition, their ability to produce the six basic facial expressions of emotion was periodically assessed throughout the study. The results showed that the b

Two non-related patients, a boy and a girl, are described suffering from distal arthrogryposis and facial dysmorphism consisting of flat face, hypertelorism and telecanthus, small mouth with thin, downturned upper lip, micrognathia, cleft palate and simple, low-set, posteriorly angulated ears. Feeble fetal movements (case 2), polyhydramnion (case 1) and lung hypoplasia (case 2) were present. On follow-up, both children were severely developmentally retarded. These findings are consistent with the Fetal A/hypokinesia Deformation Sequence (FADS). Survival beyond the neonatal period in this heter

INTRODUCTION: Sexual assault in the military is a major concern and may result in significant health problems, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Those developing disabling PTSD symptoms may require a disability evaluation. We examined disability evaluation trends for service women with PTSD to better understand characteristics associated with inability to continue Active Duty service.
METHODS: This is a retrospective review of disability reports and electronic medical records for 322 Active Duty women diagnosed with and treated for PTSD by psychiatrists and psychologists at a lar

BACKGROUND: Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are a group of often chronic and disabling infectious conditions, closely related to poverty and inequities. While it is estimated that millions of people are affected, accurate and internationally comparable data about NTD-related morbidity and disability are lacking. Therefore we aimed to develop and pilot a toolkit to assess and monitor morbidity and disability across NTDs.
METHODS: A cross-sectional, non-random survey design with a mixed methods approach was used. We conducted a literature review on existing tools to assess and monitor disabi
