Cross-Platform and cross-species lipidomic profiling identifies promising biomarkers for adolescent major depressive disorder.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) in adolescents is a critical public health concern, yet objective diagnostic biomarkers remain lacking. We conducted an integrative lipidomics study across human cohorts and a chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) rat model. Targeted UPLC-MS/MS profiling was applied to a training cohort (95 MDD, 40 controls), and untargeted UPLC-HRMS profiling to an independent cohort (56 MDD, 37 controls). Candidate biomarkers were identified using univariate tests, partial least squares discriminant analysis, and three feature-selection methods (Boruta, LASSO, RFE), with pr

Hyperspectral imaging-based strategy for detecting micro-bioplastics in anaerobic digestate matrices.

An efficient analytical strategy based on short-wave infrared hyperspectral imaging (SWIR-HSI: 1000-2500 nm) combined with chemometrics was developed to rapidly and non-destructively identify micro-bioplastics (MBPs) within the anaerobic digestate matrix. Four representative BP objects were selected as sources of MBPs: a coffee capsule (CA) made of poly(lactic acid)/poly(butylene succinate) (PLA/PBS) blend; a cup (CU), composed of a Mater-Bi® commercial formulation based on PLA and PBS; a plate (PL) made of PLA; and a shopper bag (SH), made of a Mater-Bi® blend containing PLA, thermoplastic st

Subtype-associated gut microbial taxa and their clinical correlates in acute ischemic stroke: comparison of large-artery atherosclerosis and small-vessel occlusion.

OBJECTIVE: The gut microbiome gets altered during ischemic stroke (IS); however, whether distinct microbial signatures characterize specific IS subtypes, such as large-artery atherosclerosis (LAA) and small-vessel occlusion (SVO), and their relation to subtype-specific clinical features, remains unclear. This study aimed at comparing gut microbiome profiles among patients with LAA, patients with SVO, and healthy controls (HCs); further, the associations between subtype-enriched microbial taxa and clinical parameters were examined. METHODS: We compared gut microbiome profiles and clinical asso

EEG-based hypoglycemia detection in Type 1 Diabetes: Proof-of-concept study.

Early detection of hypoglycemia among non-hypoglycemic conditions is critical in type 1 diabetes (T1D), as delayed intervention can lead to serious neurological and metabolic consequences. Although continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems provide continuous glucose measurements, they are invasive and do not capture early neurophysiological alterations associated with hypoglycemia-related metabolic changes. This study presents a preliminary feasibility investigation of a non-invasive brain-computer interface approach for classifying hypoglycemia versus non-hypoglycemia in individuals with ty

Metabolomic and Cardiotoxicity Analyses of American Aconitum Compared to Related Asian and European Species.

Aconitum species have been used as traditional medicines in Asian countries for millennia, and contain well-characterized bioactive diterpenoid alkaloids. In contrast, American Aconitum species have been less studied, despite their close phylogenetical relationship to the important Asian medicinal species. This study aims to investigate the chemistry and bioactivity of American Aconitum, since they also produce diterpenoid alkaloids that possess toxicity. The chemical profiles of three American Aconitum species, A. delphiniifolium, A. columbianum, and A. uncinatum, and their four individual pl

Osteoarthritis pain inversely correlates with histidine and glutamine following CSF and serum profiling.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis is a leading cause of pain and disability, yet the biological processes linking peripheral joint pathology with central pain mechanisms and wider symptom burden remain poorly defined. METHODS: We performed an integrated metabolomic and inflammatory analysis of cerebrospinal fluid and serum obtained from patients with osteoarthritis (n = 81) and healthy pain-free controls (n = 70). Proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy was used for metabolomic profiling, alongside targeted protein assays for inflammatory mediators. Orthogonal partial least squares discrimina

An Adaptive Multi-Representation Fusion Framework for EMG Pattern Recognition in Transradial Amputees.

Electromyography (EMG)-based pattern recognition is a key enabling technology for intuitive upper-limb prosthetic control; however, amputee EMG signals show substantial intersubject variability and nonstationary characteristics, which can limit the effectiveness of conventional fixed feature representations. This study proposes an Adaptive Multi-Representation Fusion Framework that combines an enhanced Adaptive Linear Series Decomposition Learner (Adaptive LSDL) with Time-Domain Power Spectral Descriptors (TDPSD) for amputee movement classification. The proposed Adaptive LSDL extends conventio

Intestinal Microecology Dysbiosis, Cultivable Pathogen Composition, and Antimicrobial Susceptibility Profiles Associated with Intestinal Exposure and Ocular Opacity in Hybrid Porcupinefish.

Intestinal exposure and ocular opacity occur in cultured hybrid porcupinefish, but the associated pathological lesions and gut microecological changes remain poorly characterized. Hybrid porcupinefish were assigned to a healthy control group (CT-CD-JK), an intestinal exposure group (CT-CD-FB), or an ocular opacity group (CT-YQ-FB). Gut microbiota, histopathology, cultivable bacteria, and antimicrobial susceptibility were assessed using 16S rRNA sequencing, hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining, bacterial isolation and identification, and disk diffusion testing. Diseased fish showed evident inte

Serum metabolomic signatures of relapse recovery in early multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Relapses in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) are acute neuroinflammatory events that shape long-term disease trajectory. Yet, the molecular events during the early recovery period remain poorly characterized, particularly in early, treatment-free disease. Defining these molecular dynamics may clarify mechanisms of repair relevant for understanding early disease progression. OBJECTIVE: Identify serum metabolomic signatures that discriminate early-stage, untreated RRMS by time from last clinical relapse and capture trends in the recovery period. METHODS: Using a cross-

Machine Learning Models for the Early Real-Time Prediction of Deterioration in Intensive Care Units-A Novel Approach to the Early Identification of High-Risk Patients.

Background Predictive machine learning models have made use of a variety of scoring systems to identify clinical deterioration in ICU patients. However, most of these scores include variables that are dependent on medical staff examining the patient. We present the development of a real-time prediction model using clinical variables that are digital and automatically generated for the early detection of patients at risk of deterioration. Methods Routine monitoring data were used in this analysis. ICU patients with at least 24 h of vital sign recordings were included. Deterioration was defined

Interactions between Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae strains and the resident lung microbiota in swine.

Enzootic pneumonia (EP) in swine, caused by Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (M. hyopneumoniae), is a chronic respiratory disease that leads to significant economic losses in pig production. Infection with M. hyopneumoniae can induce pulmonary dysbiosis; however, the impact of different strains with varying degrees of virulence on the composition of a healthy microbiota remains incompletely understood. This study investigated alterations in the lung microbiome of pigs experimentally infected with two distinct strains of M. hyopneumoniae (UFV1 and UFV2) using 16S rRNA gene-based metataxonomic analyses
