Fidelity evaluation of the Water First intervention for promoting tap water consumption in school-age children.

BACKGROUND: A cluster-randomized controlled trial examining the impact of the Water First water promotion and access program in 18 elementary schools found that the intervention increased water consumption and prevented overweight. This study describes a secondary analysis of implementation fidelity and its association with change in students' beverage intake and body mass index (BMI) z-score in the intervention arm. METHODS: Researchers observed Water First fidelity (visible water promotional material, quality of study-provided water sources and drinking vessels in classrooms, school cafeter

Reciprocal relationships between adolescent mental health difficulties and alcohol consumption.

The directionality of the relationship between adolescent alcohol consumption and mental health difficulties remains poorly understood. This study investigates the longitudinal relationship between alcohol use frequency, internalizing and externalizing symptoms from the ages of 11 to 17. We conducted a random-intercept cross-lagged panel model across three timepoints (ages: 11yrs, 14yrs, 17yrs; 50.4% female) in the Millennium Cohort Study (N = 10,647). Survey weights were used to account for attrition. At each timepoint, past month alcohol use frequency was self-reported, parents and cohort me

The Association Between Intimate Partner Encouragement of Alcohol Use and Alcohol Use Among Females Formerly Involved in the Juvenile Justice System.

Females who are involved with the juvenile justice system as adolescents are at risk for heavy alcohol use, which is associated with an increased risk of recidivism and negative health outcomes. Alcohol use peaks during emerging adulthood and intimate partners play an increasingly important role in decision making during this developmental period. Using data from a longitudinal study of females who were involved in the juvenile justice system as adolescents (n = 80), we investigated whether intimate partner encouragement of alcohol use is associated with higher rates of alcohol use frequency a

Developmental Differences Emerge in How Negative Consequences, Negative Expectancies, and Alcohol Use Relate Over Time.

OBJECTIVE: Learning theories suggest an aversive learning process whereby negative consequences of alcohol use curtail drinking. However, the literature examining this prospective association is mixed. We aimed to clarify this aversive learning process by identifying how (mediators), for whom (moderators), and when (differences across development) such learning occurs. Negative alcohol expectancies were proposed as a mediator, and sensitivity to punishment was proposed as a moderator. Negative consequences were hypothesized to lead to increases in negative expectancies and, in turn, reductions

Associations between day-level affect profiles and same-day substance use among young adults.

OBJECTIVE: Emotions play a critical role in health risk behaviors, including substance use. However, current research often focuses exclusively on average levels of positive and negative affect, neglecting the complexity of daily emotional patterns. By capturing multiple dimensions of affect, including arousal and discrete states, we can improve our understanding of proximal predictors of substance use. The present study demonstrates the utility of a novel methodological approach for assessing affect patterns in daily life in relation to alcohol and cannabis use. METHOD: Daily diary data from

Voluntary Binge Consumption of Ethanol in a Sweetened, Chocolate-Flavored Solution by Male and Female Adolescent Sprague Dawley Rats.

BACKGROUND: The still maturing adolescent brain may be particularly vulnerable to lasting consequences of ethanol (EtOH) exposure. Yet, human adolescents are the age group most likely to engage in binge drinking (a pattern of drinking leading to blood EtOH concentrations (BECs) of 80 mg/dl or greater). Most studies to date assessing the long-term effects of adolescent EtOH exposure in outbred rodent populations have either used experimenter-administered EtOH to produce BECs in the binge range or assessed voluntary intake of EtOH at well below binge levels. Beginning with a modified schedule-in

Oxytocin polyuria and polydipsia is blocked by NaCl administration in food-deprived male rats.

We examined the effects of NaCl injections on the polydipsia and polyuria induced by subcutaneous oxytocin (OT) administration in food-deprived male rats. During the first 12 h of the treatment day, both food deprivation and OT administration increased urine excretion but reduced water intake, water balance (fluid intake minus urine volume) and body weight. OT treatment enhanced urine excretion and the reduction in water balance and body weight without reducing the water intake of food-deprived animals. Analysis of the physiological effects of OT administration showed increases in urinary sodi

Magnesium appetite in the rat.

Rats modify their ingestive behaviour to correct deficiencies of minerals such as sodium and calcium. Here, we examined the effect of magnesium deprivation on the ingestion of MgCl2 and other solutions. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a nutritionally complete or magnesium-deficient diet and were then given 3.2, 10, 32, or 100mM MgCl2, 32mM CaCl2, 32mM NaCl, 10mM HCl, or 2.5mM saccharin, and their intake was measured for 24h in a two-bottle choice test with water. Within the first 5 min, magnesium-deprived subjects given 3.2, 32, or 100mM MgCl2 or 32mM CaCl2 drank significantly more of these

Metabolic mapping of the effects of chronic voluntary ethanol consumption in rats.

The 2-[14C]deoxyglucose method was used to examine the effects of chronic, voluntary ethanol consumption on rates of local cerebral glucose utilization (LCGU). LCGU was measured in male Long-Evans rats immediately following the completion of a 60-min schedule-induced polydipsia drinking session. Three groups of animals were examined: animals with a history of ethanol consumption that received ethanol on the test day (ethanol-ethanol), animals with a similar ethanol history that were presented with water on the test day (ethanol-water), and a control group that received water throughout the exp

Bradykinin suppresses alcohol intake and plays a role in the suppression produced by an ACE inhibitor.

The possible role of the endogenous kinins in the control of alcohol intake was assessed in two experiments. In Experiment 1, naive rats, maintained on ad lib food and water, were given daily 40-min access to a 6% (w/v) alcohol solution and water. Daily intraperitoneal (IP) injections of captopril (20 mg/kg) significantly reduced alcohol intake, while pretreatment with subcutaneous (SC) injections of the bradykinin antagonist [D-Phe7]-bradykinin (100-300 micrograms/kg) attenuated the suppressive effect of captopril on alcohol intake. The saline vehicle or the bradykinin antagonist alone did no

Ethanol polydipsic choice: effects of alternative fluid polydipsic history.

Two groups of rats drinking either 5% ethanol or 0.9% NaCl solution under a fixed-time 1-min schedule of food pellet delivery became polydipsic during daily 3-hr sessions. When both fluids were made available to animals during sessions, strong side preferences typically developed so that neither fluid was preferred in spite of the fact that one group had a mild-to-moderate physical dependence on ethanol. The group that drank 0.9% NaCl solution initially failed to acquire a strong 5% ethanol polydipsia when this became the sole available fluid, and special procedures were required to induce an

Do theory of planned behaviour constructs change during adolescent alcohol use onset?

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a critical period for the initiation of alcohol use. It is uncertain how predictors of alcohol onset, such as Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) constructs, change in response to alcohol onset. This study tests for longitudinal changes in TPB constructs during adolescents’ onset of alcohol consumption. METHOD: Data were collected longitudinally in three waves (T1, T2, T3) in Norway. Participants (N = 1,548; Mage = 13.54, 51% girls, 49% boys) reported alcohol use and TPB constructs (attitudes; subjective norms (SN); Perceived Behavioural Control (PBC); intentions) at ea

Alcohol use in Iraq: Perceptions of interviewed students at three Iraqi universities.

INTRODUCTION: Iraq has faced decades of conflict and increased exposure to alcohol use. While the majority (60%) of Iraq's population is under the age of 24, there is no research examining their views on alcohol use and related factors. This study explores how the individual, interpersonal and social contexts of university students may influence their experiences and perceptions of alcohol use. METHODS: We undertook a qualitative study underpinned by a socio-ecological framework and the alcohol use motivational model. Forty students from 11 disciplines at three universities across Iraq were i

Egg production response of laying chickens to feather clipping, cool water and aspirin during hot weather conditions.

An 8-week trial was conducted between March and May (hot-dry season) to determine effects of water temperature, feather clipping and aspirin on egg production of chickens. The treatments tested were hens given ordinary drinking water (control), cool water (100 g ice block per L) and aspirin (0.3 mg per L of ordinary water) and hens whose feathers were clipped (about two thirds of body feathers clipped). At 32 weeks of age, 120 Lohmann brown layer chickens of similar live weights were randomly divided into 12 groups of ten hens each and assigned to the treatments in triplicate using a completel

The benzodiazepine inverse agonist RO19-4603 exerts prolonged and selective suppression of ethanol intake in alcohol-preferring (P) rats.

The time course of the benzodiazepine (BDZ) inverse agonist RO19-4603 in antagonizing ethanol (EtOH) intake was investigated in alcohol-preferring (P) rats (n = 7) maintained on 24-h continuous free-choice access to EtOH (10% v/v), water, and food. After fluid intakes had stabilized over several weeks, animals were injected with Tween-80 vehicle solution or RO19-4603 (0.075, 0.150, and 0.30 mg/kg). EtOH and water intakes were determined at 8- and 24-h intervals. RO19-4603 caused a marked attenuation of EtOH drinking with each of the doses tested. EtOH intake during the 8-h following 0.075, 0.1
