Serum core-type fucosylated prostate-specific antigen index for the detection of high-risk prostate cancer.

It is known that core-type fucosylation is higher in prostate cancer cells than in other cancer cell types and is associated with high-risk prostate cancer. Here, we developed an automated microcapillary electrophoresis-based immunoassay system for measuring serum core-type fucosylated prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and evaluated whether the serum fucosylated PSA index (FPI) can detect high-risk prostate cancer. Core-type fucosylated-free PSA was measured by our automated microcapillary electrophoresis-based immunoassay system with Pholiota squarrosa lectin. The FPI was calculated from total

Screening for synchronous esophageal second primary tumors in patients with head and neck cancer.

Patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) have an increased risk of developing esophageal second primary tumors (ESPTs). We aimed to determine the incidence, stage, and outcome of synchronous ESPTs in patients with HNSCC in a Western population. We performed a prospective, observational, and cohort study. Patients diagnosed with HNSCC in the oropharynx, hypopharynx, any other sub-location in combination with alcohol abuse, or patients with two synchronous HNSCCs, between February 2019 and February 2020 underwent screening esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). ESPT was defined as

Readmissions and complications in breast ductal carcinoma in situ: A retrospective study comparing screen- and non-screen-detected patients.

OBJECTIVE: Population-wide mammographic screening programs aim to reduce breast cancer mortality. However, a broad view of the harms and benefits of these programs is necessary to favor informed decisions, especially in the earliest stages of the disease. Here, we compare the outcomes of patients diagnosed with breast ductal carcinoma in situ in participants and non-participants of a population-based mammographic screening program. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of all patients diagnosed with breast ductal carcinoma in situ between 2000 and 2010 within a single hospital. A total of 211

Comparisons of Papanicolaou Utilization and Cervical Cancer Detection between Rural and Urban Women in Taiwan.

Using the claims data of one million insured residents in Taiwan from 1996-2013, this study identified 12,126 women in an urban city (Taichung) and 7229 women in a rural county (Yunlin), aged 20 and above. We compared Papanicolaou (Pap) test uses and cervical cancer detection rates between urban and rural women. Results showed that the Pap screening rate was slightly higher in rural women than in urban women (86.1 vs. 81.3 percent). The cervical cancer incidence was much greater for women without Pap test than women with the test (35.8 vs. 9.00 per 1000 in rural women and 20.3 vs. 7.00 per 100

A comparison of ThinPrep against four non-volatile transport media for HPV testing at or near the point of care.

The Xpert HPV Test is used at point of care for cervical screening in a number of low and middle income countries (LMIC). It is validated for use with ThinPrep-PreservCyt transport medium which has a high methanol content and is therefore classified as a dangerous good for shipping, making cost, transportation and use challenging within LMIC. We compared the performance of ThinPrep against four non-volatile commercially available media for human papillomavirus (HPV) point of care testing. Ten-fold serial dilutions were prepared using three HPV cell lines each positive for 16, 18 or 31 and with

Challenges of the Underserved and Underscreened in Mammography.

Screening mammography is the best available means of detecting breast cancer in its early, more treatable stages. Yet many women in the United States who are of screening age have not had a recent mammogram. This article explores the reasons women are underserved and underscreened, including cost, examination-associated pain, and inconvenience, as well as possible solutions to these and other barriers to screening mammography. The needs of special patient populations, such as women with disabilities, also are addressed, along with general measures for encouraging mammography screening particip

Multi-gene signature of microcalcification and risk prediction among Taiwanese breast cancer.

Microcalcification is one of the most common radiological and pathological features of breast ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), and to a lesser extent, invasive ductal carcinoma. We evaluated messenger RNA (mRNA) transcriptional profiles associated with ectopic mammary mineralization. A total of 109 breast cancers were assayed with oligonucleotide microarrays. The associations of mRNA abundance with microcalcifications and relevant clinical features were evaluated. Microcalcifications were present in 86 (79%) patients by pathological examination, and 81 (94%) were with coexistent DCIS, while on

Estimating the Screening-Eligible Population Size, Ages 45-74, at Average Risk to Develop Colorectal Cancer in the United States.

Colorectal cancer is a growing burden in adults less than 50 years old. In 2018, the American Cancer Society published a guideline update recommending a reduction in the colorectal cancer screening start age for average-risk individuals from 50 to 45. Implementing these recommendations would have important implications for public health. However, the approximate number of people impacted by this change, the average-risk population ages 45-49, is not well-described in the literature. Here, we provide methodology to conservatively estimate the average-risk and screening-eligible population in th

Risk factors for precancerous lesions of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma in high-risk areas of rural China: A population-based screening study.

Although many studies in China have found that environmental or lifestyle factors are major contributors to the etiology of esophageal cancer, most of the patients in the above studies are in the middle and late stages, the early-stage patients account for a small proportion. To clarify the risk/protective factors contributing to early lesions, we conducted the present cross-sectional study.A total of 2925 healthy controls and 402 patients with esophageal precancerous lesions were included in our study by endoscopic examination. Information on risk/protective factors was collected by personal

Screening participation after a false positive result in organized cervical cancer screening: a nationwide register-based cohort study.

Our aim was to investigate whether receiving a false positive (FP) cervical cytology result affected subsequent cervical cancer screening participation. This Danish nationwide register-based cohort study included 502,380 women aged 22.5-45 attending cervical cancer screening in 2012-2014 with a normal (n = 501,003) or FP (n = 1,377) cytology screening result. A FP result was defined as a cervical cytology showing high grade cytological abnormalities followed by a normal or 'Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia grade 1' biopsy result. Women were categorized as subsequent participants if they had

Acceptability of self-taken vaginal HPV sample for cervical screening among an under-screened Indigenous population.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV), the causative agent of cervical cancer, can be screened for using self-collected vaginal samples (self-testing). This may overcome barriers to screening for Māori women who suffer a greater burden of cervical disease than New Zealand European women. AIMS: This study aimed to explore the potential acceptability of HPV self-testing for never/under-screened (self-reported no cervical screen in 4+ years, aged 25+) Māori women by Kaupapa Māori (by, with and for Māori) mixed methods, involving hui (focus groups/interviews) and survey.
