Current drug treatment of patients with bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder: selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors versus mood stabilizers.

Our aim was to review and compare findings from controlled trials and previous reviews concerning current drug treatment of patients suffering from bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED). Thus we selected published articles quoted over the last 10 years in the databases of Medline and Cochrane Library. The combination of pharmacological and psychological treatments is superior to the single psychotherapeutic approach, which in turn is superior to single drug treatment (just superior to placebo). Among drug treatments, SSRIs are the first line choice treatments, especially in prim

Repetitive self-mutilation among Japanese eating disorder patients with drug use disorder: comparison with patients with methamphetamine use disorder.

Repetitive self-mutilation and drug use disorder are less prevalent in Japan, although the prevalence of eating disorder is comparable with rates in Western countries. However, repetitive self-mutilation has not previously been described in relation to eating disorder and drug use disorder in Japan. Subjects consisted of 19 patients with eating disorders and drug use disorders (ED+DUD) and 12 patients with methamphetamine use disorders (MAP). Subjects were drawn from 180 patients who were referred because of eating disorders and 22 patients who were referred because of methamphetamine-related

Radiation-induced chromosome aberrations in lymphocytes from man and crab-eating monkey. The dose-response relationships at low doses.

To obtain information on the relation between yield of chromosome aberrations and dose at low-dose levels, experiments were conducted with 5, 10, 20, 30 and 50 rad of 137Cs gamma-rays, on lymphocytes from man and crab-eating monkey (Macaca fascicularis). The dose-response relationship for dicentrics was obtained from the combined data of these low-dose experiments with those of our previous ones at high doses (100-400 rad). When the difference between observed yields and those expected from the linear-quadratic model were computed, the dose-response curve had a good fit for man, but not for th

Mediterranean diet, eating behaviours, and nutritional intervention in childhood obesity: what works, where, and for whom-a narrative review.

Childhood obesity is a leading public health challenge with rising global prevalence and significant impacts on cardiometabolic health extending into adulthood. Lifestyle intervention, with nutrition as its central component, is the main point of paediatric obesity management, yet the evidence base remains fragmented across regions, instruments, and clinical models. This narrative review synthesises European evidence on Mediterranean diet (MD) adherence assessment, multidisciplinary intervention outcomes, and global comparative patterns in paediatric obesity management. Among dietary patterns,

Ponderal Status, Eating and Lifestyle Habits in Rural School Children: A Pilot Survey of the SBAM-ONFOODS Cohort Study.

Background/Objectives: The rising prevalence of overweight and obesity reflects a trend towards worsening eating habits and reduced physical activity, with significant implications for public health and life expectancy. This pilot survey aimed to evaluate weight status, food habits and lifestyle in primary school children from under-researched rural areas of the Lazio region, Italy. Methods: A total of 182 children aged 6-10 years from the municipalities of Monte Romano and Tolfa were enrolled. Body Mass Index (BMI), calculated from measured weight and height, was classified by IOTF and WHO de

Emotional and Uncontrolled Eating as Mediators Between Perceived Stress and Adiposity Indicators in University Students: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Perceived stress has been associated with maladaptive eating behaviors, yet evidence from young adults in non‑Western populations remains limited. This study examined whether eating behavior traits mediate the relationship between stress and adiposity indicators among university students. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, undergraduate students (aged 18-26 years) completed Arabic versions of the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) and the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire-Revised 18 (TFEQ-R18) to assess perceived stress and three eating behavior traits (i.e., cognitive restraint, u

The impact of school-based healthy eating education on adolescent girls' diet and body image: A reflexive thematic analysis.

Healthy eating education has been compulsory in English schools since 2020, yet concerns persist about its effectiveness in reducing childhood obesity and its potential contribution to rising eating disorder rates among adolescent girls. This study therefore explored girls' experiences and perceptions of healthy eating education and its impact on diet and body image. Forty girls aged 16-18 completed a qualitative survey, and data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Four themes were constructed: 'Good Food, Bad Food', reflecting perceptions of rigid food messaging; 'Moral Narrative

Disordered eating in office workers is correlated with trauma, stress, emotional regulation, and sleep quality: a cross-sectional screening.

Eating and feeding disorders (EDs) are a heterogeneous group of pathologies accompanied by important metabolic and psychiatric comorbidities that occur most frequently among the young but also appear in adulthood. Consequently, they can have a high impact on the quality of life and productivity. In the workplace, they are associated with traumatic events, stress, and sleep problems. Office workers who are not engaged in night shifts are an ideal sample for studying the relationship between sleep problems and EDs, since the confounding factor of night work can be excluded. This study is a surve

The Association between Psychological Distress and Disordered Eating Behavior in Young People with Type 1 Diabetes: A Systematic Review.

CONTEXT: Young people with type 1 diabetes mellitus experience unique challenges, including physical and psychological changes, altered nutritional needs, and the risk of weight fluctuations. Psychological distress, a frequently overlooked factor in routine clinical practice, is a key variable, as it may be both a consequence of and a contributing factor to difficulties with dietary-insulin treatment in this population. It could contribute to the development of disturbed eating behaviors and more severe mental health conditions, such as eating disorders. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present syst

Bioprotective Lactic Acid Bacteria for Fresh Ready‑to‑Eat Salmon: Antilisterial Effects Without Compromising Product Quality.

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are recognized as candidates for biopreservation because of their antagonistic activities. For industrial applications, however, the performance of individual LAB strains in specific food matrices must be carefully evaluated. This study investigated the biopreservative potential of four LAB strains (Carnobacterium maltaromaticum 35, C. maltaromaticum 55, C. divergens 468, and Leuconostoc gelidum 406) in vacuum-packed fresh ready-to-eat salmon portions stored at 4 ℃ for 22 days. Strain performance was assessed based on their growth properties, effects on the microbial

Work and family conflicts and abnormal eating behaviors in occupational populations: The mediating role of Big Five personality traits.

BACKGROUND: Work-Family Conflict (WFC) and Family-Work Conflict (FWC) are prevalent psychosocial stressors among working populations, closely associated with mental and behavioral health outcomes. However, the ways in which these conflicts relate to abnormal eating behaviors (EBS) remain insufficiently understood. Personality traits may function as psychological resources that shape individuals' stress responses, offering a potential explanatory account. Guided by the Conservation of Resources (COR) theory, this study examined the associations between WFC, FWC, and EBS, and evaluated the indep

The relationship between childhood emotional neglect and emotional eating: the chain mediating role of alexithymia and difficulties in emotion regulation.

BACKGROUND: Emotional eating is prevalent across various weight groups and has a significant impact on individuals' emotion regulation and healthy eating behaviors. As an early adverse experience, childhood emotional neglect may be associated with greater emotional eating tendencies, potentially through poorer emotion recognition and emotion regulation; however, the underlying pathways remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between childhood emotional neglect and emotional eating among college students, and to test the independent and chain mediating effects of alexithymia and

Spatial and telehealth accessibility to eating disorder treatment in the United States: evidence from registry and LLM-augmented data.

BACKGROUND: Adequate geographic access to eating disorder treatment is essential for timely care. Yet the distribution of in-person and telehealth programs, and their accessibility across urban and rural settings and across communities with different socioeconomic conditions, remains unclear. METHODS: We combined an official registry of eating disorder programs from the National Alliance for Eating Disorders with an AI-augmented web corpus built from U.S. domains using ISTARI.AI and large language models. After cleaning and linkage, we analyzed 328 registry centers for in-person care and an a

Eating Disorder Clinician Views About the Impact of Out-of-Home Calorie Labelling on Their Patients: A Qualitative Interview Study.

OBJECTIVE: Accumulating evidence suggests that people with eating disorders experience mainly negative impacts of out-of-home calorie labelling. This study explored eating disorder clinician perspectives on how such labels affect individuals with eating disorders, and their views on implementation of this policy. METHOD: Semi-structured 1:1 interviews were conducted with 20 eating disorder clinicians from different professional disciplines across adolescent and adult services. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to analyse interview transcripts. RESULTS: Four themes and nine subthemes were

Feasibility and acceptability outcomes of the InMe trial - a randomised controlled trial in participants with subclinical eating and somatic symptom disorders.

Dysregulations in interoception have been associated with mental health disorders including eating and somatic symptom disorders. The present study addresses the feasibility and acceptability of a novel, behavioural intervention (InMe) in a healthy sample with low, self-reported interoception. The efficacy of the InMe intervention against an active control arm was tested in a randomised controlled trial (RCT) reported elsewhere, while the feasibility and acceptability of InMe were assessed in parallel and are fully reported here. Participants were randomly assigned to the intervention arm (InM

Efficacy of brain-based neurofeedback interventions for binge eating: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

Binge eating behavior and food craving are associated with altered reward sensitivity and impaired inhibitory control, contributing to physical and psychological consequences. Neurofeedback (NFB) has emerged as a promising non-invasive intervention for reducing binge eating behaviors, yet its overall efficacy remains unclear and warrants quantitative synthesis. A systematic search was conducted across MEDLINE, CENTRAL, EMBASE, ClinicalTrial.gov, and PubMed to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of NFB interventions for binge eating behaviors or binge eating disorder (BED) in adults. BDNF Val66Met polymorphism is linked to elevated levels of serotonin-transporter in the medial prefrontal cortex but not to altered eating behavior.

A single nucleotide polymorphism in the brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)-encoding gene leads to diminished BDNF signaling resulting from Val66Met and has been linked to obesity. Previous imaging studies regarding the impact of BDNF Val66Met on the central serotonin system, which is involved in behavior, cognition and control of satiety, have not focused on body weight or food-intake related behavior. We revisited a cohort of thirty non-depressed individuals with obesity and 15 normal-weight controls. 29 obese and 13 controls underwent [11C]DASB positron emission tomography imaging of t
