BACKGROUND/AIMS: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are a rare group of neoplasias of the gastrointestinal tract that have not yet been fully investigated. In this article the authors present the experience of an emergency surgery department in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with such neoplasms and discuss the approaches to these 'strange' tumors.
METHODS: A review of our 4-year experience in emergency surgery was performed and 9 patients were found with the diagnosis of GIST. The median follow-up was 32.3 (range 18-45) months.

During a nine year period, 36 patients have been treated at the Mid-America Heart Institute for postinfarctional rupture of the interventricular septum. Twenty-two (61%) of the patients were male and the average age was 68.9 years. Coronary angiography revealed that 48% of the patients had single vessel coronary artery disease. Emergency revascularization of acute carotid artery occlusion is still controversial.We treated 15 patients (13 men and two women, mean age of 67.3 years) with acute atherosclerotic carotid occlusion by endovascular procedures and evaluated the usefulness of this treatment. All of the patients were evaluated with emergency MRI and MRA before treatment. Intracranial tandem arterial occlusion due to distal embolism was observed in nine patients, and contralateral carotid stenosis (> 70%) was observed in seven. The mean NIHSS score of the patients was 15.4 +/- 7.4 (mean +/- SD) before treatment.
