Effects of short-term personal exposure to air pollution on platelet mitochondrial DNA methylation levels and the potential mitigation by L-arginine supplementation.

The potential effect of short-term exposure to air pollution on mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) methylation remains to be explored. This study adopted an experimental exposure protocol nested with an intervention study on L-arginine (L-Arg) supplementation among 118 participants. Participants walked along a traffic road for 2 hours in the last day of a 14-day intervention to investigate the effects of short-term personal exposure to air pollution on platelet mtDNA methylation and the possible modifying effects of L-Arg supplementation. Results showed that short-term personal exposure to air pollutan

Hourly air pollution exposure and emergency department visit for acute myocardial infarction: Vulnerable populations and susceptible time window.

Although short-term exposure to air pollution can trigger sudden heart attacks, evidence is scarce regarding the relationship between sub-daily changes in air pollution level and the risk of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Here we assessed the intraday effect of air pollution on AMI risk and potential effect modification by pre-existing cardiac risk factors. Hourly data on emergency department visits (EDVs) for AMI and air pollutants in Brisbane, Australia during 2013-2015 were acquired from pertinent government departments. A time-stratified case-crossover analysis was adopted to examine r

Short-term air pollution exposure and COVID-19 infection in the United States.

The Sars-CoV-2 disease (known as COVID-19) has become a global public health emergency. Researchers have been unveiling the transmission mechanisms and disclosing possible contributing factors. Studies have theorized plausible linkage mechanisms between air pollution exposure and COVID-19 infection and have divided the air pollution exposure into two types: long-term exposure and short-term exposure. However, present studies on impacts of short-term exposure have not reached a conclusive result and are mostly focusing on Asian and European countries. In this study, we conduct a nationwide anal

Frequent occurrence of respiratory symptoms in children is associated with exposure to air pollution, land use types, and parental mental health in the Greater Taipei area.

Although studies have investigated the individual effects of air pollution, land use types, and parental mental health on children's respiratory health, few studies have examined the effects of these risk factors simultaneously in children aged <2 years. We investigated the effects of exposure to air pollution, land use types surrounding residences, and parental mental health on the frequent occurrence of respiratory symptoms in children aged <2 years in the Greater Taipei area. Participants were recruited from an ongoing Taiwanese birth cohort study. We analyzed the data of the participants w

Unlocking the potential of biosynthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles for degradation of synthetic organic dyes as wastewater pollutants.

The azo dyes released into water from different industries are accumulating in the water bodies and bioaccumulating within living systems thereby affecting environmental health. This is a major concern in developing countries where stringent regulations are not followed for the discharge of industrial waste into water bodies. This has led to the accumulation of various pollutants including dyes. As these developing countries also face acute water shortages and due to the lack of cost-effective systems to remove these pollutants, it is essential to remove these toxic dyes from water bodies, era

Diurnal variation and potential sources of indoor formaldehyde at elementary school, high school and university in the Centre Val de Loire region of France.

Formaldehyde (HCHO) is one of the abundant indoor pollutants and has been classified as a human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Indoor HCHO at schools is particularly important due to the high occupancy density and the health effects on children. In this study, high time resolved measurement of formaldehyde concentration was conducted in the classrooms at elementary school, high school and university under normal students' activities in three different locations in the Region Centre Val de Loire-France. Indoor average formaldehyde concentrations at those t

Air pollution control efficacy and health impacts: A global observational study from 2000 to 2016.

Particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 μm (PM2.5) concentrations vary between countries with similar carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, which can be partially explained by differences in air pollution control efficacy. However, no indicator of air pollution control efficacy has yet been developed. We aimed to develop such an indicator, and to evaluate its global and temporal distribution and its association with country-level health metrics. A novel indicator, ambient population-weighted average PM2.5 concentration per unit per capita CO2 emission (PM2.5/CO2), was developed to assess c

Air pollution exposure-the (in)visible risk factor for respiratory diseases.

There is increasing interest in understanding the role of air pollution as one of the greatest threats to human health worldwide. Nine of 10 individuals breathe air with polluted compounds that have a great impact on lung tissue. The nature of the relationship is complex, and new or updated data are constantly being reported in the literature. The goal of our review was to summarize the most important air pollutants and their impact on the main respiratory diseases (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, lung cancer, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, respiratory infections, bronchiectasis

Estimating perinatal critical windows of susceptibility to environmental mixtures via structured Bayesian regression tree pairs.

Maternal exposure to environmental chemicals during pregnancy can alter birth and children's health outcomes. Research seeks to identify critical windows, time periods when exposures can change future health outcomes, and estimate the exposure-response relationship. Existing statistical approaches focus on estimation of the association between maternal exposure to a single environmental chemical observed at high temporal resolution (e.g., weekly throughout pregnancy) and children's health outcomes. Extending to multiple chemicals observed at high temporal resolution poses a dimensionality prob

Thiol/methylthio-functionalized porous aromatic frameworks for simultaneous capture of aromatic pollutants and Hg(II) from water.

Simultaneously capturing organic pollutants and heavy metal can greatly reduce the water remediation time and cost, however it is still a great challenge presently. Herein, two novel thiol/methylthio-functionalized porous aromatic frameworks were synthesized as sorbents via the Sonogashira-Hagihara reaction of 1,3,5-triethynylbenzene and 1,3,5-tris(4-bromophenyl) benzene, the subsequent chloromethylation of the phenyl rings, and the final nucleophile substitution of -Cl groups by NaSH/NaSMe. These two sorbents were characterized by FT-IR spectra, energy dispersive X-ray spectra, scanning elect

Relationship between COVID-19 infection rates and air pollution, geo-meteorological, and social parameters.

Like all infectious diseases, the infection rate of COVID-19 is dependent on many variables. In order to effectively prepare a localized plan for infectious disease management, it is important to find the relationship between COVID-19 infection rate and other key variables. This study aims to understand the spatial relationships between COVID-19 infection rate and key variables of air pollution, geo-meteorological, and social parameters in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The relationship was analyzed using Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) model and Geographic Information System (GIS) by means of CO

Association of exposure to air pollution and green space with ovarian reserve hormones levels.

Exposure to air pollution has been associated with adverse health effects while exposure to greenspace has been associated with public health benefits. However, the available evidence on the association of exposure to air pollution with ovarian reserve markers is still scarce, with no study on such an association with greenspace exposure. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association of exposure to particulate matter with diameter of less than 1, 2.5 and 10 μm (PM1, PM2.5, PM10), traffic indicators (distance from women's residence to major roads and total street length in differen

Does fluoride cause the mysterious chronic kidney disease of multifactorial origin?

A chronic kidney disease of multifactorial origin (CKDmfo), also known as CKD of unknown origin, started to manifest during the past four decades in certain economically poor, peri-equatorial agricultural countries. CKDmfo is an environmentally induced, occupationally-mediated, chronic tubulointerstitial disease. Prolonged exposure to environmental nephrotoxic agents and extenuating conditions are prerequisites for its manifestation. More than 30 causative factors have been postulated, but none one has been properly scientifically tested, to be able to include or exclude. In recent years, fluo

Maternal exposure to ambient particulate matter and green spaces and fetal renal function.

Exposure to air pollution has been associated with different harmful effects and exposure to greenspace has been related to improved human health. However, the available evidence on the impact of these exposures on renal function is still scarce. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between exposure to ambient levels of PM1, PM2.5, PM10 and indicators of exposure to traffic as well as greenspace during pregnancy and fetal renal function based on the umbilical cord blood. This study was based on 150 pregnant women residing in Sabzevar, Iran (2018). Multiple linear regression

Globally Regionalized Monthly Life Cycle Impact Assessment of Particulate Matter.

This work provides a globally regionalized approach for quantifying particulate matter (PM2.5) health impacts. Atmospheric transport and pollutant chemistry of primary particulate matter, sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxide (NOx), and ammonia (NH3) from stack emissions were modeled and used to calculate monthly high-resolution maps of global characterization factors that can be used for life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) and risk assessment. These characterization factors are applied to a global data set of coal power emissions. The results show large regional and temporal differences in hea
