Overview of thyroid disorders in pregnancy.

Thyroid disorders rank as the second most common endocrine abnormalities during pregnancy, posing significant challenges for clinical diagnosis due to overlapping symptoms with normal pregnancy. Thyroid hormones play a critical role in fetal growth and neurocognitive development, necessitating precise interpretation of maternal thyroid function tests, which differ from non-pregnant states. Proper management of thyroid dysfunction can significantly reduce morbidity in both mothers and their fetuses. This review explores the physiological changes in thyroid function during pregnancy, the epidemio

Global genomic survey of Salmonella Kentucky: discovery of a chromosomeborne blaNDM-5 and the emergence of ST314, an MDR clone mediated by the IncR plasmid.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Salmonella enterica serotype Kentucky (S. Kentucky) is a global challenge, with increasing resistance to cephalosporins, ciprofloxacin, and carbapenems significantly limiting treatment strategies, yet its worldwide dissemination patterns and AMR profiles remain unclear. Therefore, this study monitored the current trends in global spatiotemporal distribution and AMR of 9,557 S. Kentucky from 47 countries through large-scale genome-based molecular epidemiology. We revealed that S. Kentucky demonstrated a broad geographic distribution, with ST314 emerging as a no

One Health Investigation of a Household Salmonella Thompson Outbreak in Italy: Genomic and Epidemiological Characterization of an Emerging Serotype.

Salmonella is a Gram-negative enteric bacterium responsible for the foodborne and waterborne disease salmonellosis, which was the second most reported foodborne gastrointestinal infection in humans in the European Union in 2023. Animals represent the principal reservoir of this pathogen, with animal-derived food products serving as the main route of transmission to humans. In a household context, having numerous animals can be a crucial factor for contracting Salmonella spp. infection. In the present study, we report a case of a familiar outbreak of Salmonella Thompson that occurred in 2024 in

Current Overview of the Biology and Pharmacology in Sugen/Hypoxia-Induced Pulmonary Hypertension in Rats.

The Sugen 5416/hypoxia (Su/Hx) rat model of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) demonstrates most of the distinguishing features of PAH in humans, including increased wall thickness and obstruction of the small pulmonary arteries along with plexiform lesion formation. Recently, significant advancement has been made describing the epidemiology, genomics, biochemistry, physiology, and pharmacology in Su/Hx challenge in rats. For example, there are differences in the overall reactivity to Su/Hx challenge in different rat strains and only female rats respond to estrogen treatments. These conditi

Non-alcohlic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD): Is it a Dormant Volcano or Tip of an Iceberg?

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a major cause of chronic liver disease, is known to affect a quarter of the global adults. Natural history of NAFLD shows interindividual variation, traditionally it progresses from simple steatosis to steatohepatitis to fibrosis/cirrhosis and finally yet rarely to hepatocellular carcinoma. It is largely a lifestyle-related disease and is often labeled as the hepatic manifestation of metabolic syndrome. Both prevention and control of NAFLD include controlling risk factors (obesity, diabetes mellitus, hypertension and dyslipidemia), through lifestyle m

Invasive Fungal Infections in Children with Acute Leukemia: Epidemiology, Risk Factors, and Outcome.

Invasive fungal infections (IFI) cause morbidity and mortality in children with acute leukemia (AL). We retrospectively collected data on febrile neutropenic episodes (FNE) in AL children (2016-2021) and assessed factors associated with proven/probable IFI. Ninety-three children developed 339 FNE. Seventeen (18.3%) children developed 19 proven/probable IFI (11 yeast; eight molds). The proven/probable yeast IFI rate was 6/52 (11.5%) in children who belong to the high risk for IFI category (HR-IFI-AL: high-risk acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), acute myeloid leukemia, relapse); and 5/41 (12.2%)

Metagenomic evaluation of the performance of passive Moore swabs for sewage monitoring relative to composite sampling over time resolved deployments.

Moore swabs have re-emerged as a versatile tool in the field of wastewater-based epidemiology during the COVID-19 pandemic and offer unique advantages for monitoring pathogens in sewer systems, especially at the neighborhood-level. However, whether Moore swabs provide comparable results to more commonly used composite samples remains to be rigorously tested including the optimal duration of Moore swab deployment. This study provides new insights into these issues by comparing the results from Moore swab samples to those of paired composite samples collected from the same sewer lines continuous

Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia: An Update.

In this review, we discuss recent developments in our understanding of frontal fibrosing alopecia, a disease that has become increasingly common and widespread since its first description in 1994. An inherited predisposition to frontal fibrosing alopecia, previously suspected from the occurrence of familial cases, has been confirmed through genetic studies. Nevertheless, the epidemiology continues to implicate environmental factors in the aetiology. The search has focussed mainly on personal skin care products such as facial moisturisers and UV filters, and there is also some evidence implicat
