Adipokine-myokine-hepatokine compartment-system in mothers and children: An explorative study.

OBJECTIVE: Maternal lifestyle during pregnancy has an effect of gestational development and neonatal outcome. Overweight gravidas and gravidas with excessive weight gain have an increased risk of gestational complications and neonatal metabolic disorder. The underlying mechanisms are still under discussion, but the hormonally active fat mass and its biomarkers, adipocytokines, may play a key role by potentially having a direct impact on the metabolic homeostasis of the system in concert with other biomarkers like hepatokines and myokines. Up to now little is known in terms of lifestyle habits

Physical activity: benefit or weakness in metabolic adaptations in a mouse model of chronic food restriction?

In restrictive-type anorexia nervosa (AN) patients, physical activity is usually associated with food restriction, but its physiological consequences remain poorly characterized. In female mice, we evaluated the impact of voluntary physical activity with/without chronic food restriction on metabolic and endocrine parameters that might contribute to AN. In this protocol, FRW mice (i.e., food restriction with running wheel) reached a crucial point of body weight loss (especially fat mass) faster than FR mice (i.e., food restriction only). However, in contrast to FR mice, their body weight stabil

Nuclear receptors in the mosquito Aedes aegypti: annotation, hormonal regulation and expression profiling.

In anautogenous mosquitoes, egg development requires blood feeding and as a consequence mosquitoes act as vectors of numerous devastating diseases of humans and domestic animals. Understanding the molecular mechanisms regulating mosquito egg development may contribute significantly to the development of novel vector-control strategies. Previous studies have shown that in the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti, nuclear receptors (NRs) play a key role in the endocrine regulation of reproduction. However, many mosquito NRs remain uncharacterized, some of which may play an important role in mosqu

Use of growth hormone and other anabolic agents in AIDS wasting.

Body wasting and loss of lean body mass (LBM) have been associated with increased mortality and disease progression, and reduced quality of life, in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. The failure of nutritional therapies and, more recently, of effective viral suppression, to consistently restore LBM has prompted investigation of the pharmacologic use of a number of specific protein anabolic agents, including recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH), insulin-like growth factor I (rhIGF-I), and synthetic testosterone derivatives, such as nandrolone decanoate, oxandrolone,

Hyperlipidemia. What is 'normal,' who should be treated and how.

Considering that over half of Americans will die from cardiovascular disease, the over-whelming majority of those deaths being from atherosclerosis, we need to accept and act on the vast body of information derived from investigation of coronary risk factors. Identification of persons at risk needs to be done early--when the patient is in his or her 20s or 30s--not after an infarction has occurred or an angiogram indicates a problem. Although high serum lipid levels are obviously not the only factor involved in development of atherosclerosis, their early identification is a simple, cost-effect

US Army Accession and Retention Standards: Impact on Obesity and Medical Readiness.

INTRODUCTION: Military body fat standards were implemented in the 1980s to prevent obesity and associated poor military readiness. In the past 2 decades, enforcement of existing Army body composition standards has been eroded by the steady increase in national obesity rates, the demand for new recruits especially during the 2007 surge in Iraq, and the COVID epidemic in 2020. The diminishing qualified recruit pool puts a new focus on accession standards. The purpose of accession standards is to ensure that recruits will meet soldier standards, but accession standards have been relaxed to improv

Secondary sexual characteristics in children with cerebral palsy and moderate to severe motor impairment: a cross-sectional survey.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the development of secondary sexual characteristics in children with cerebral palsy (CP) of moderate to severe motor impairment to children in the general population and to relate their sexual maturation to a measure of their body fat. METHODS: A multicenter, cross-sectional survey of 207 children who were 3 to 18 years of age and had CP of moderate to severe motor impairment (Gross Motor Functional Classification System [GMFCS] levels 3, 4, and 5) was conducted at 6 geographic sites; attempts were made to identify all eligible children through multiple methods and enro

Long-term effects of a very low-carbohydrate diet and a low-fat diet on mood and cognitive function.

BACKGROUND: Very low-carbohydrate (LC) diets are often used to promote weight loss, but the long-term effects on psychological function remain unknown. METHODS: A total of 106 overweight and obese participants (mean [SE] age, 50.0 [0.8] years; mean [SE] body mass index [calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared], 33.7 [0.4]) were randomly assigned either to an energy-restricted (approximately 1433-1672 kcal [to convert to kilojoules, multiply by 4.186]), planned isocaloric, very low-carbohydrate, high-fat (LC) diet or to a high-carbohydrate, low-fat (LF) diet for 1

Correction of liposuction sequelae by autologous fat transplantation.

BACKGROUND: In many countries, liposuction is the most frequently performed aesthetic procedure. Although liposuction has been considered a safe surgical procedure, reports indicate that it can have significant sequelae. Irregularities ranging from "oversuctioning" to bumpy skin and asymmetries result from inadequate experience of the surgeon. METHODS: A total of 57 consecutive female patients were operated on from June 2005 to June 2007. The age distribution of the patients ranged from 22 to 53 years, with a mean of 34.2 years. All the patients that were included in the study had undergone f

Increases in adipose tissue and muscle function are longitudinally associated with better quality of life in colorectal cancer survivors.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) survivors need evidence-based guidelines pertaining to post-treatment body composition, which could benefit health-related quality of life (HRQoL). We aimed to describe the course of several body composition measures, and to assess longitudinal associations of these measures with HRQoL, fatigue and chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). In a prospective cohort among stage I-III CRC survivors (n = 459), five repeated home visits from diagnosis up to 24 months post-treatment were executed. Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference and fat percentage were asse

Body distortions in Anorexia Nervosa: Evidence for changed processing of multisensory bodily signals.

Body size and shape distortion is a core feature of Anorexia Nervosa (AN) - patients experience their body as fat while objectively being very thin. The cause of this distortion is unclear and disturbances in body perception could be involved. Body perception comprises estimating shape and location of one's body and requires integrating multisensory signals. We investigated if and how body location perception is changed and tested 23 AN patients and 23 healthy controls (HC) in a Rubber Hand Illusion (RHI) reaching paradigm. We presented two types of multisensory conflicts (visual-proprioceptiv

Assessment of approach-avoidance tendencies in body image using a novel touchscreen paradigm.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Approaching the thin-ideal and avoiding the stigma of fatness are motivational tendencies resulting from the internalisation of sociocultural appearance norms. Individual differences in subclinical levels of eating disorder symptomatology may be related to variation in motivational tendencies regarding thin vs. non-thin bodies. METHODS: To empirically investigate this hypothesis, the current study employed a novel touchscreen approach-avoidance task with the capacity to effectively simulate compatible approach-avoidance movements. Eighty-four undergraduate females p

Faced with one's fear: Attentional bias in anorexia nervosa and healthy individuals upon confrontation with an obese body stimulus in an eye-tracking paradigm.

OBJECTIVES: Cognitive biases, particularly attentional biases, have been shown to be central to anorexia nervosa (AN). This study looked at attention deployment when consecutively viewing an obese and own body stimulus that both might represent feared stimuli in AN. METHODS: Individuals with AN (n = 26) and mentally healthy controls (MHCs; n = 16) viewed a picture of themselves and a standardized computer-generated obese body in random order for 4,000 ms each and then rated the attractiveness of the body parts of both stimuli. We compared dwell times on subjectively unattractive versus attrac

Elevation of hypothalamic ketone bodies induces a decrease in energy expenditures and an increase risk of metabolic disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Ketone bodies (such as β-hydroxybutyrate or BHB) have been recently proposed as signals involved in brain regulation of energy homeostasis and obesity development. However, the precise role of ketone bodies sensing by the brain, and its impact on metabolic disorder development remains unclear. Nevertheless, partial deletion of the ubiquitous ketone bodies transporter MCT1 in mice (HE mice) results in diet-induced obesity resistance, while there is no alteration under normal chow diet. These results suggest that ketone bodies produced during the high fat diet would be important signa

Diet-induced obese rats exhibit impaired LKB1-AMPK signaling in hypothalamus and adipose tissue.

AMPK not only acts as a sensor of cellular energy status but also plays a critical role in the energy balance of the body. In this study, LKB1-AMPK signaling was investigated in diet-induced obese (DIO) and diet resistant (DR) rats. In hypothalamus, DIO rats had lower level of LKB1, AMPKα and pAMPKα than chow-fed or DR rats. Both orexigenic peptide NPY and anorexigenic peptide POMC expression were reduced in hypothalamus of DIO rats. i.c.v. injection of AICAR, an activator of AMPK, increased NPY expression but did not alter POMC expression in DIO rats. In periphery, LKB1 protein content and pA

Normal weight obesity: a South Asian phenotype.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Recent guidelines emphasize the significance of measuring adiposity rather than relying solely on BMI. This shift underscores the importance of normal-weight obesity (NWO), which is identified by assessing body fat percentage. This review presents recent advances in understanding NWO, including several substantial cohort studies that examine its prevalence, pathophysiology, and clinical implications. RECENT FINDINGS: The prevalence of NWO is notably high. Extensive cohort studies have established its association with increased cardiometabolic mortality, changes in microbiot

UV Irradiation Increases Appetite and Prevents Body Weight Gain through the Upregulation of Norepinephrine in Mice.

UV irradiation of the human skin downregulates lipid synthesis and adipokine production in subcutaneous fat. Recent evidence has suggested that UV exposure limits body weight gain in mouse models of obesity. However, the relationship between norepinephrine and UV irradiation has not been previously reported. Chronic UV exposure stimulated food intake but prevented body weight gain. Leptin, an appetite-suppressing hormone, was significantly reduced in the serum of the UV-irradiated mice. In contrast, UV irradiation induced browning of subcutaneous white adipose tissues without increasing physic

Treatment of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis with growth hormone.

Severe growth retardation and profoundly altered body composition are observed in children with juvenile chronic arthritis receiving glucocorticoids. This study assessed the effects of growth hormone (GH) on height velocity, body composition and bone density. Fourteen patients were treated with GH (1.4 U/kg/week) for 1 year and then studied for a 2nd year off GH. The treatment increased insulin-like growth factor 1 and insulin-like growth factor binding protein 3 plasma levels. All patients showed an increase in height velocity. Lean body mass increased by 12%. After the cessation of GH therap

Relative Age and Maturity Timing in Youth Team Sports: Associations with Body Size and Vertical Jump Performance.

Relative age effect (RAE) and biological maturation can significantly impact athlete selection. This study examined the presence of RAE in youth team invasion sports and assessed whether the timing of maturity influences body size and lower-body explosive strength. Athletes were grouped by age category (U14, U16, U18), and the distribution of birth quartiles was analyzed. Maturity timing was estimated using age at peak height velocity (APHV), and lower-body explosive strength was evaluated through jumping performance. Comparisons across age groups showed progressive increases in body size and
