Acetic acid, a common weak acid in industrial fermentation processes, occurs naturally in lignocellulosic hydrolysates and is a byproduct of microbial metabolism. As a significant environmental stressor, it triggers the expression of multiple genes involved in various cellular responses, including biological processes, cellular components, and molecular functions. Using the acid-tolerant strain Pichia kudriavzevii PkAC-9, developed through adaptive laboratory evolution under acetic acid stress, we conducted a transcriptional analysis of 70 stress response-associated genes. RT-qPCR analysis rev

Dietary patterns greatly affect periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease that compromises both dental and systemic health. According to the emerging evidence, periodontal risk is more strongly associated with the overall dietary quality, especially fiber density intake, than any one micronutrient. While the average intake in industrialized countries is only half of the recommended 30 g day-1, high-fiber diets such as the Mediterranean diet, the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH), and whole-food plant-based diets are consistently associated with a 20-40% lower periodontitis pre

Obesity is a major global public health challenge associated with metabolic disorders and chronic diseases. Resistant starch (RS), a type of dietary fiber that resists digestion in the small intestine and undergoes fermentation in the colon, has gained attention for its potential role in obesity management and functional food development. This review explores the intricate relationship between RS and gut microbiota, focusing on its impact on microbial composition, short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production, and gut barrier integrity. Key mechanisms underlying RS-mediated metabolic regulation, in

Pectin has a complex structure, and different structures lead to different biological functions. Citrus pectin (PC) has been widely proven to possess immunomodulatory activity. This study compared and analyzed the anti-allergic activities of PC and polygalacturonic acid (PGA) based on intestinal microbiota, metabolomics, and molecular docking. The results showed that dietary interventions with PC and PGA significantly relieved allergic symptoms, intestinal damage, and the contents of specific antibodies IgE and IgG1. Among them, PGA exhibited a significant suppressive effect on histamine and a

Enterococci are widely distributed in nature and exhibit good temperature and pH tolerance, making them suitable for industrial fermentation. It can produce bacteriocins, natural antibacterial substances utilized in food preservation. Some Enterococci are employed as probiotics to regulate human immunity and maintain healthy intestinal environments. However, recent scientific studies have highlighted the pathogenicity and multidrug resistance of Enterococci, classifying it as an important pathogen in clinical infections. Moreover, increasing evidence has linked Enterococcus sp., particularly E

Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) is a uremic toxin accumulated in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and involved with atherosclerosis. TMAO is derived from the gut microbiota (nutrient fermentation) and is found in some fish and seafood. This pilot study evaluated the acute effects of cod fish, red meat, and vegetable meal consumption on plasma TMAO levels in nondialysis CKD patients. Patients (five women, three men, 72.5 [7.7] years, body mass index [BMI], 25.6 [1.4] kg/m2, glomerular filtration rate, 32.5 [18.5] mL/min) consumed lunches containing codfish, red meat, and chickpeas, with

Influenza is a highly contagious, acute respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus. The continual emergence of drug-resistant viral strains has created an urgent need for the development of novel anti-influenza agents. In our previous study, we identified a series of nor-sesquiterpenoids with potent activity against influenza A virus, isolated from the fermentation broth of Streptomyces sp. XM17-an actinobacterial strain derived from fresh panda feces. Building on these findings, we synthesized the core nor-sesquiterpene scaffold and functionalized it by attaching various molecular frag

Phycocyanin is a natural blue pigment from cyanobacteria such as Limnospira platensis, also known as "Spirulina." Its production is costly and faces sustainability challenges due to water needs, carbon dioxide emissions, and lack of operational stability. Here, we review the use of halo-alkaliphilic cyanobacteria to overcome these challenges. This review synthesizes conceptual innovations that were proposed and tested experimentally previously, resulting in the presentation of a complete bioprocess for phycocyanin production. These innovations are: (1) the use of a pH above 10.5 to implement d

The diminishing reserves of fossil fuels have spurred a global search for sustainable energy alternatives. Bioethanol, a renewable fuel derived from biomass, represents a promising alternative, particularly in tropical regions. Yeasts, key agents in ethanol fermentation, have attracted substantial attention for their ability to convert sugars into ethanol. However, the commonly used mesophilic yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is temperature-sensitive, limiting its effectiveness in tropical climates. Tropical countries such as Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos, harbor abundant non-convention

2'-fucosyllactose (2'-FL) holds significant role in the infants' nutrition. While microbial production of 2'-FL has predominantly utilized Escherichia coli and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the potential of Pichia pastoris, renowned for its robust NADPH regeneration capability, remains underexplored. Herein, we systematically engineered the metabolism of P. pastoris to develop an efficient 2'-FL-producing cell factory. We first constructed the de novo biosynthesis pathway for 2'-FL in P. pastoris, achieving an initial titer of 0.143 g/L. By optimizing enzyme selection and solubility of α-1,2-fucos

Domestic goats (Capra aegagrus hircus) are important producers of milk, meat, and hair. The early weaned goats may face fundamental issues related to the incomplete rumen development to deal with the transition from liquid feeds into solid feeds. Therefore, the present review focuses on the nutritional strategies and feeding methods to enhance the proper rumen morphological development, fermentation efficiency and microbiota structure in young goats. The enhanced rumen development caused by these nutritional strategies can have lasting positive effects on their overall growth performance and h

Amid growing concerns about climate change, environmental pollution, and fossil resource depletion, bio-based chemicals and materials have garnered significant attention. Succinic acid (SA), a four-carbon dicarboxylic acid, is a key platform chemical for producing industrially important compounds such as poly(butylene succinate) (PBS), a biodegradable polymer. In this paper, we demonstrate the enhanced production of SA using metabolically engineered Mannheimia succiniciproducens PALK (pMS3-gltA) strain, which achieves high SA yields through enhanced biomass production and optimized metabolic p

Natural polysaccharides (NPs) are sugar chains bound by glycosidic bonds that are composed of at least 10 monosaccharides and have broad biological activity. The human body microbiome is a complex ecosystem that plays a role in host metabolism, immunity, and other important life activities. Numerous studies have demonstrated an obvious relationship between the gut flora and the occurrence of many human diseases. Many studies have reviewed and investigated the effects of polysaccharides on the microbiome, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Most of these studies have focused on the ef

Livestock manure is a valuable organic fertilizer, however, current treatment methods encounter challenges such as slow biological fermentation and high-cost abiotic processes. Hence, this study developed an ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)-enhanced Fe0 activated persulfate (PS) technology aimed at accelerating the humification of manure. The addition of 2 mL of 0.75 M PS, 0.6 g of Fe0 and 0.3 g of EDTA to 10 g of chicken manure achieved substantial humification within 40 min, with fulvic acid and humic acid contents reaching 5.26 % and 8 %, respectively. FTIR and XPS revealed that the t

Antibiotic pressure exerts profound effects on bacterial physiology, not limited to classical genetic resistance mechanisms. Increasing evidence highlights the ability of pathogens to undergo metabolic rewiring-an adaptive, reversible reorganization of core metabolic pathways that promotes survival under antimicrobial stress. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of antibiotic-induced metabolic adaptations, encompassing glycolysis, the tricarboxylic acid cycle, fermentation, redox balance, amino acid catabolism, and membrane biosynthesis. We critically examine how diverse antibiotic cl
