BACKGROUND: The current gold standard in the treatment of severe hallux rigidus is arthrodesis of the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP-I) joint. We present the results of a new 3-component MTP-I prosthesis. We determined (1) the intraoperative and perioperative complications; (2) survivorship of prosthesis components and rate of secondary surgeries for any reason; (3) prosthetic component stability and radiographic alignment; (4) the degree of pain relief; and (5) the midterm functional outcomes including radiographic range of motion (ROM).

The rupture of the Achilles tendon is frequently sports-related. In the time from 1 January, 1978 until 31 December, 1988, we treated 358 men and 54 women with such an injury at the Staatliche Orthopaedische Klinik in Munich. The average age of these patients was 43 years. The site of the rupture was generally located between 3-5 cm proximal of the distal insertion of the tendon. In human, mutations of the protocadherins FAT4 and DCHS1 result in Van Maldergem syndrome, which is characterised, in part, by craniofacial abnormalities. Here, we analyse the role of Dchs1-Fat4 signalling during osteoblast differentiation in mouse. OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the possibility that autoantibodies to filaggrin, detected in patients with early RA (having a disease duration of not more than one year), may predict joint destruction assessed after five years of observation.
METHODS: This is a 5 yr extension of a previous study (1) of 112 consecutive patients with early RA. Serum antifilaggrin autoantibodies were detected by immunoblotting (AFA) and by indirect immunofluorescence ("AKA"). DAS28, pain on a VAS. HAQ, and CRP were measured. Plain X-ray films were taken from hands and forefeet and a Larsen score was calculated.
