OBJECTIVE: The location of the foot primary somatosensory area (SI) is puzzling in contrast to the parietal localization of the hand SI. Electrical cortical stimulation studies have revealed the foot somatosensory function in the paracentral lobule anterior and posterior to the central sulcus (CS). A recent study of intraoperative somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) using posterior tibial nerve (PTN) stimulation revealed frontal localization of the foot SI. However, most previous studies using scalp SEPs and somatosensory evoked magnetic fields (SEFs) for PTN found that the initial cortical

IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is an emerging immune-mediated chronic fibrotic disease characterized by tumour-like mass formation. Reports of brain parenchymal involvement in IgG4-RD are rare and complete treatment-related remission of lesions has never been reported. Here, we present a woman in her mid-50s who developed headache and seizures. Brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed frontal bilateral pachymeningitis and a left frontal lobe parenchymal lesion, and pathologic findings were consistent with an IgG4-RD central nervous system manifestation. She had a history of tumour-like growth

Tourette syndrome is the most prevalent hyperkinetic movement disorder in children and can be highly disabling. While the pathomechanism of Tourette syndrome remains largely obscure, recent studies have greatly improved our knowledge about this disease, providing a new perspective in our understanding of this condition. Advances in electrophysiology and neuroimaging have elucidated that there is a reduction in frontal cortical volume and reduction of long rage connectivity to the frontal lobe from other parts of the brain. Several genes have also been identified to be associated with Tourette

Easy of learning (EOL) judgments occur before active learning begins, and it is a prediction of how difficult it will be to learn new material in future learning. This study compared the amplitude of event-related potential (ERP) components and brain activation regions between high and low EOL judgments by adopting ERPs with a classical EOL judgment paradigm, aiming to confirm the ease-of-processing hypothesis. The results showed that (1) the magnitudes of EOL judgments are affected by encoding fluency cues, and the judgment magnitude increases with encoding fluency; (2) low EOL judgments are

This paper shows the brain correlates of Cloninger's personality model during the presentation of social scenarios under positive or negative valence situations. Social scenarios were constructed when participants played the Dictator game with two confederates that had two opposites roles as the cooperator (Coop) and non-cooperator (NoCoop). Later the same day during a fMRI scanning session, participants read negative (Neg) and positive (Pos) situations that happened to confederates in the past. Participants were asked to think "how do you think those people felt during that situation?" A diss

Endometriosis is a systemic medical condition characterized by endometrial tissue that is abnormally implanted in extrauterine sites, including the central nervous system. In this article, we reported the case of a patient with presumed cerebral endometriosis who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and panic disorder and systematically reviewed the literature for previously reported neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients with cerebral and cerebellar endometriosis. The PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science bibliographic databases were searched according to the PRISMA guidelines. Seven previous case

Visual search performance varies with stimulus and response history. Priming of pop-out refers to increased accuracy and reduced response time with repeated presentation of particular singleton and distractor features (e.g., a red target among green distractor stimuli), which are abruptly impaired when singleton and distractor features swap (e.g., green target among red distractors). Meanwhile, inhibition of return refers to the slowing of response time when target location repeats. Neurophysiological correlates of both these phenomena have been reported in the frontal eye field (FEF), an area

BACKGROUND: Depression is common in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Our previous studies suggest that depressed PD patients have altered insula structures. It is, however, still unknown whether the altered structures cause disruption of insula functional networks, further contributing to depression in PD.
METHODS: In the present study, 17 depressed PD patients, 17 non-depressed PD patients, and 17 normal controls were enrolled. All subjects went through neurological and psychiatric clinical assessments. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and seed-based insula function

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a good tool for researchers to understand the biological mechanisms and pathophysiology of the brain due to the translational characteristics of MRI methods. For the psychiatric illness, this kind of mental disorders usually have minor alterations when compared to traditional neurological disorders. Therefore the functional study, such as functional connectivity, would play a significant role for understanding the pathophysiology of mental disorders. This chapter would focus on the discussion of task MRI-based functional network studies in anxiety. For socia

Focal cortical dysplasia is a common cause of medically refractory epilepsy in infancy and childhood. We report a neonate with seizures occurring within the first day of life. Continuous video-EEG monitoring led to detection of left motor seizures and a right frontal EEG seizure pattern. Brain MRI revealed a lesion within the right frontal lobe without contrast enhancement. The patient was referred for epilepsy surgery due to drug resistance to vitamin B6 and four antiepileptic drugs. Lesionectomy was performed at the age of two and a half months, and histopathological evaluation confirmed the

The majority (90%-95%) of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is sporadic, and ∼50% of patients develop symptoms of frontotemporal degeneration (FTD) associated with shorter survival. The genetic polymorphism rs12608932 in UNC13A confers increased risk of sporadic ALS and sporadic FTD and modifies survival in ALS. Here, we evaluate whether rs12608932 is also associated with frontotemporal disease in sporadic ALS. We identified reduced cortical thickness in sporadic ALS with T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (N = 109) relative to controls (N = 113), and observed that minor allele (C) carri

Acquired brain pathology can be associated with diverse psychiatric manifestations. Three major types of psychiatric disorders potentially found in cases of acquired brain pathology are examined: (1) psychosis, (2) mood disorders, and (3) personality disorders with special emphasis in so-called "acquired psychopathy." Two types of psychotic manifestations are reviewed: (a) Schizophrenia-like psychosis; (b) Other delusional disorder, specifically, somatoparaphrenia and delusional misidentification syndromes, which include reduplicative paramnesias, Capgras syndrome, Frégoli syndrome, and "doubl

We previously reported a patient who had developed 2 glioblastomas at the age of 54 and 64 years, respectively. The first glioblastoma in the right frontal lobe was treated with surgery and radiotherapy. Ten years later, the patient developed a second, left frontal glioblastoma. Discordant patterns of TP53 and PTEN mutations suggested that the second tumor was not a recurrence but an independently developed glioblastoma. To determine the molecular mechanism underlying this enigmatic case with 10-year survival, we performed whole-exome sequencing. We found that both tumors were IDH-wildtype, ex

INTRODUCTION: Orthostatic myoclonus (OM) is a recognized syndrome of gait unsteadiness accompanied by lower limb myoclonus provoked by the assumption of an upright posture. OM typically affects the elderly and is often associated with neurodegenerative disease. We sought to review the clinical and electrophysiologic characteristics of OM due to brain tumor treatment, the first reported lesional cases of this rare disorder.
METHODS: The database of the Mayo Clinic Rochester Movement Disorders Laboratory was searched for all patients diagnosed with OM from January 2007 to December 2016. All ava

The use of top-down cognitive control mechanisms to regulate emotional responses as circumstances change is critical for mental and physical health. Several theoretical models of emotion regulation have been postulated; it remains unclear, however, in which brain regions emotion regulation goals (e.g., the downregulation of fear) are represented. Here, we examined the neural mechanisms of regulating emotion using fMRI and identified brain regions representing reappraisal goals. Using a multimethodological analysis approach, combining standard activation-based and pattern-information analyses,

Healthy aging is associated with declines in episodic memory. This reduction is thought to be due in part to age-related differences in encoding-related processes. In the current study, we performed an activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies assessing age-related differences in the neural correlates of episodic encoding. Only studies using the subsequent memory paradigm were included. We found age-related under-recruitment of occipital and fusiform cortex, but over-recruitment in a set of regions including bilateral middle/superior

BACKGROUND: Agitated behaviors are frequently observed in patients with Alzheimer disease (AD). The neural substrate underlying the agitated behaviors in dementia is unclear. We hypothesized that different dimensions of agitated behaviors are mediated by distinct neural systems.
METHODS: All the patients (n=32) underwent single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). Using the Agitated Behavior in Dementia scale, we identified the relationships between regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) patterns and the presence of each of three dimensions of agitated behavior (physically agitated behav

Marchiafava-Bignami disease (MBD) is a rare alchol related disorder characterized by demyelination of the corpus callosum. Clinical features include impaired consciousness, seizure, dysarthria, limb hypertonus, frontal lobe symptoms in the acute stage and interhemispheric disconnection syndromes in the chronic stage. While autopsy was historically necessary for a definitive diagnosis of MBD, imaging systems such as X-ray computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging have enabled in vivo diagnosis. We reviewed 91 reported MBD cases additional to our 9 own cases focusing on their imaging. T

Alcohol-induced psychotic disorder (AIPD) also known as alcohol hallucinosis is a rare complication of alcohol abuse. The pathogenesis and treatment of AIPD are still unclear. Few prospective treatment studies are available but case reports generally suggest that anti-psychotic treatment is effective. Brain imaging changes in relation to treatment response have also not been studied except for case reports. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of anti-psychotic treatment on psychopathology and regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in patients with AIPD before and after 6 weeks of

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) is an inherited angiopathy caused by mutations of the Notch 3 gene. Olfactory identification deficits are present in a number of neurodegenerative disorders. However, olfaction has not been investigated in CADASIL. The aim of the present study was to assess olfactory identification in CADASIL and to determine whether there is an association between olfactory identification and the frontotemporal lobe.
METHODS: Twenty-seven patients and 27 control subjects had an olfactory iden
