Journal of child psychology and psychiatry, and allied disciplines2006eng
BACKGROUND: The current study examined the neuro-cognitive network of visual word rhyming judgment in 14 children with dyslexia and 14 age-matched control children (8- to 14-year-olds) using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).
METHODS: In order to manipulate the difficulty of mapping orthography to phonology, we used conflicting and non-conflicting trials. The words in conflicting trials either had similar orthography but different phonology (e.g., pint-mint) or similar phonology but different orthography (e.g., jazz-has). The words in non-conflicting trials had similar orthography

Mounting evidence supports the hypothesis that spinal microglia modulate the development and maintenance of some chronic pain states. Here we examined the role of spinal microglia following both peripheral inflammatory insult and peripheral nerve injury. We observed significant ipsilateral dorsal horn microglia activation 2 weeks after injury and bilateral activation 50 days following nerve injury as well as 24 h following intraplantar zymosan but not intraplantar complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA). Ipsilateral but not contralateral microglia activation was associated with hind paw mechanical hy

The aim of this fMRI study was to explore brain structures that are involved in the processing of erotic and disgust-inducing pictures. The stimuli were chosen to trigger approach and withdrawal tendencies, respectively. By adding sadomasochistic (SM) scenes to the design and examining 12 subjects with and 12 subjects without sadomasochistic preferences, we introduced a picture category that induced erotic pleasure in one sample and disgust in the other sample. Since we also presented neutral pictures, all subjects viewed pictures of four different categories: neutral, disgust-inducing, erotic

Previous studies have shown that the nervous system can produce anticipatory adjustments that alter the mechanical behavior of the arm in order to resist environmental disturbances. In the present paper, we focus on the ability of subjects to transfer acquired stiffness patterns to other parts of the workspace and on the durability of stiffness adaptations. To explore the transfer of stiffness control, subjects were trained at the left of the workspace to resist the effects of a single-axis disturbance that was applied by a robotic device. Following training, they were tested for transfer at t

This study investigated the utility of neurophysiologic examination and thermal quantitative sensory testing (QST) in the diagnosis of trigeminal neuropathy and neuropathic pain. Fifty-eight patients (14 men), 34 with sensory deficit within the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) and 24 within the lingual nerve (LN) distribution, were included. Twenty-six patients (45%) reported neuropathic pain. Patients underwent blink reflex (BR) test and thermal QST; sensory neurography was done to the IAN patients. Results of clinical sensory testing were available from the charts of 48 patients revealing abnor

We investigated cortical activation as reflected in task-related spectral power (TRPow) changes in 8 writer's cramp patients during writing on a digital board and during isometric contraction and compared them to those of 8 age-matched healthy subjects. Scalp EEG was recorded over the contralateral primary sensorimotor area (SM1(c)), and from the ipsilateral sensorimotor area (SM1(i)). The electromyogram (EMG) was recorded from the Extensor Digitorum Communis (Extensor), Flexor Digitorum Superficialis (Flexor), and First Dorsal Interosseous (FDI) muscles. We analyzed (1) handwriting performanc

INTRODUCTION: Studies of prefrontal cortical (PFC) function in schizophrenia have been inconsistent, with studies showing both increased and decreased PFC activation compared to healthy controls. Discrepant findings may be due to task performance effects or demographic differences between samples. We report functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data comparing subjects with schizophrenia and healthy controls performing a 2-back working memory (WM) task, addressing the effects of task performance.
METHODS: Twenty-two controls and 14 patients with DSM-IV schizophrenia, scanned on a Siemen

OBJECTIVE: This study sought to investigate neural activity in the amygdala during episodes of mania.
METHOD: Nine manic subjects and nine healthy comparison subjects underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while performing a neuropsychological paradigm known to activate the amygdala. Subjects viewed faces displaying affect (experimental task) and geometric forms (control task) and matched them to one of two simultaneously presented similar images.
RESULTS: Manic subjects had significantly increased activation in the left amygdala and reduced bilateral activation in the latera

The cerebral cortex contains circuitry for continuously computing properties of the environment and one's body, as well as relations among those properties. The success of complex perceptuomotor performances requires integrated, simultaneous use of such relational information. Ball catching is a good example as it involves reaching and grasping of visually pursued objects that move relative to the catcher. Although integrated neural control of catching has received sparse attention in the neuroscience literature, behavioral observations have led to the identification of control principles that

Spatial release from masking (SRM), a factor in listening in noisy environments, is the improvement in auditory signal detection obtained when a signal is separated in space from a masker. To study the neural mechanisms of SRM, we recorded from single units in the inferior colliculus (IC) of barbiturate-anesthetized cats, focusing on low-frequency neurons sensitive to interaural time differences. The stimulus was a broadband chirp train with a 40-Hz repetition rate in continuous broadband noise, and the unit responses were measured for several signal and masker (virtual) locations. Masked thre

Several studies have indicated the presence of significant interarm blood pressure (BP) differences; this could result in misclassification of BP status. Nevertheless, the findings of these studies were not consistent. This prospective, observational study investigated the presence and magnitude of interarm BP differences and determined the influence of age, gender, arm circumference, smoking, being hypertensive or diabetic, or having a previous history of cardiovascular disease in these differences. The study included 384 subjects, who were patients, ward visitors, and members of the nursing

The author reviewed 34 years of personal experience with inpatients in a large municipal hospital to analyze the seats and causes of involvement of single pairs of cranial nerves. Among 578 cases, the sixth (n = 234) and second (211) nerves predominated, followed by the fourth (48), seventh (30), third (27), and eighth (18) cranial nerves. Trauma (99), infection (94), tumor (92), increased intracranial pressure (85), vascular disease (74), and demyelination (66) were common causes.

The objective of this study was to define cortical and subcortical structures activated during both active and passive movements of the ankle, which have a fundamental role in the physiology of locomotion, to improve our understanding of brain sensorimotor integration. Sixteen healthy subjects, all right-foot dominant, performed a dorsi-plantar flexion task of the foot using a custom-made wooden manipulandum, which enabled measurements of the movement amplitude. All subjects underwent a training session, which included surface electromyography, and were able to relax completely during passive

Electrical impedance myography (EIM) is a new bioimpedance-based technique for neuromuscular disease assessment. Past work has focused on EIM in the evaluation of diffuse diseases (such as myopathy). In this study, the method's most basic form, linear-EIM, was used for the assessment of restricted radiculopathic disease. Ten normal subjects and 10 patients with unilateral cervical or lumbosacral radiculopathy, diagnosed by electromyography and clinical criteria, were enrolled. Linear-EIM was performed bilaterally on all individuals, and comparisons with the major outcome variable, theta(avg),

The aim of this study was to model the cerebral generators following painful electrical stimulation of the sigmoid colon in 10 healthy controls and 10 patients with visceral pain due to the irritable bowel syndrome. The evoked brain potentials to 30 painful electrical stimuli from the sigmoid colon were recorded from 31 surface electrodes and subjected to electrical dipole source modelling. Two dipoles in the bilateral insular cortex, one dipole in the anterior cingulate gyrus and two dipoles in the bilateral second somatosensory area were found. The anterior cingulate dipole showed a more pos

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a major obstacle for movement of large molecules to and from the brain. Stimulation of the sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG), the major source of parasympathetic innervation to brain vasculature, is known to vasodilate brain vessels, and has recently been shown to also increase the permeability of the BBB in the rat. In this work, we studied the effect of SPG stimulation on BBB permeability in larger animals--Beagle dogs. Left SPG was exposed by lateral approach in five Beagle dogs, and stimulated at 10 Hz. FITC labeled 10 kDa dextran was continuously infused to th

The authors assessed manual performance and verbal dichotic listening performance in 16 epilepsy-free children with congenital unilateral brain lesions and normal IQ to investigate cerebral reorganization. In all children, the paretic hand had fair grip function, but reaction times were impaired, and cerebral reorganization of hand function in those with right hemiplegia was shown by the high incidence of pathological left-handedness. The dichotic listening results showed that most children with left lesions had a left ear advantage significantly related to the extent of brain damage. This fin

OBJECTIVE: Separation from loved ones commonly leads to grief reactions. In some individuals, grief can evolve into a major depressive episode. The brain regions involved in grief have not been specifically studied. The authors studied brain activity in women actively grieving a recent romantic relationship breakup. It was hypothesized that while remembering their ex-partner, subjects would have altered brain activity in regions identified in sadness imaging studies: the cerebellum, anterior temporal cortex, insula, anterior cingulate, and prefrontal cortex.

The cerebral control of bimanual movements is not completely understood. We investigated a 59-year-old, right-handed man who presented with an acute bimanual coordination deficit. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a lesion involving the entire corpus callosum, which was found on stereotactic biopsy to be an ischemic infarct. Paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation indicated that the patient had a lack of interhemispheric inhibition, while intracortical inhibition in motor cortex of either side was normal. Functional magnetic resonance imaging showed activation of the left SMA, the bilat
