INTRODUCTION: The indications for augmentation of gingival tissue by connective tissue graft (CTG) are numerous. The techniques are widely adopted with extensive literature reporting high success. Harvest techniques include the mid to anterior palate, versus the posterior palate and tuberosity. The latter comprises denser collagen, identified as a more suitable graft. Alas, rarely have hyperplastic responses been reported.
CASE PRESENTATION: Two adult, Caucasian patients presented with clinical need for soft tissue augmentation. Autogenous tissue was opted for, harvesting from the tuberosity

Oral infections occur frequently in humans and often lead to chronic inflammations affecting the teeth (i.e., caries), the gingival tissues surrounding the teeth (i.e., gingivitis and endodontic lesions), and the tooth-supporting structures (i.e., periodontitis). At least four basic pathogenic mechanisms have been proposed that involve oral inflammations in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis: (1) low level bacteremia by which oral bacteria enter the blood stream and invade the arterial wall; (2) systemic inflammation induced by inflammatory mediators released from the sites of the oral inflam

Pemphigus Vulgaris (PV) is an autoimmune intraepithelial blistering disease involving the skin and mucous membranes. Oral mucosa is frequently affected in patients with PV, and oral lesions may be the first sign of the disease in majority of patients. In some patients, oral lesions may also be followed by skin involvement. Therefore, timely recognition and therapy of oral lesions is critical as it may prevent skin involvement. Early oral lesions of PV are, however, often regarded as difficult to diagnose, since the initial oral lesions may be relatively nonspecific, manifesting as superficial

Allergic contact stomatitis (ACS) can occur with variable clinical presentations such as erythematous, erosive, and lichenoid forms. Burning mouth symptoms may also be a result of allergic contact stomatitis. Additionally, gingival hyperplasia has been reported in exceptional cases of ACS caused by dental metals. Here, two rare cases are presented of nickel-induced oral mucosal hyperplasia with gingival and upper palatal involvement from metal-porcelain crowns and metal-acrylic upper denture, respectively. In both cases the diagnosis was made on the basis of the positive patch test results to

Excessive alveolar bone resorption is commonly found when teeth are extracted. This is a problem in anterior part of mouth because it will result in an unaesthetic pontic on a narrow hollowed out alveolar ridge. Yet, another problem is gingival recession and root exposure in adjacent teeth which represent a therapeutic problem to the clinician.Use of acellular dermal matrix graft is an appropriate solution to obtain root coverage in areas with localized or generalized soft tissue recessions, particularly if the recessions create aesthetic concern or root sensitivity or shallow root caries lesi

The aim of this article is to review evidence on the reciprocal relationships between orthodontics and periodontics. Normal intra-arch and inter-arch relationships have long been considered as an anatomic prerequisite for the preservation of dental health and function. Certain malocclusion traits are associated with difficulties in maintaining good oral hygiene and as a consequence to poor periodontal condition. Therefore, proper alignment of the teeth provided by orthodontic treatment may promote good control of soft deposit and calculus and subsequent periodontal inflammation. The tendency o

INTRODUCTION: Congenital epulis, known as a congenital gingival granular cell tumor, is a benign tumor and very rare in newborns. Voluminous or multiple tumors can cause mechanical obstruction of the oral cavity and may result in postnatal feeding and respiratory problems.
DISCUSSION: We report the clinical case of a female full-term newborn who presented a tumor on the upper gum obtruding into the oral cavity discovered at birth. The pregnancy was followed normally with three prenatal ultrasounds, which did not show abnormalities. The mass was excised under local anesthesia on the second day

This article describes the treatment of an adult female with periodontally induced bone loss, excessive gingival display when smiling, vertical maxillary excess, a convex profile, a traumatic deep overbite, and severe lip incompetence. The therapy included four steps: (1) periodontal flap surgery and root planing with regular follow-ups; (2) leveling and aligning of the maxillary and mandibular arch with closure of all spaces, the extraction of mandibular first premolars, and retraction of the mandibular incisors; (3) LeFort I two-segment osteotomy with removal of the second premolars and a 5-

The partial withdrawal of healthy gingiva not only affects the appearance but also can bring about some complaints when the healthy gingiva is stimulated for some reasons. The junctional epithelium of gingiva moves to the root with aging, and compared with the tooth crown, the tooth root which has lower mineral content is prone to decay. Thus, gingival recession could lead to the root surface decay and make the tooth sensitive. Gingival recession is not reversible. Once the healthy gingiva shrinked, the teeth could feel uncomfortable, food impaction appeared and the original restorations have

Noma is an opportunistic infection promoted by extreme poverty. It evolves rapidly from a gingival inflammation to grotesque orofacial gangrene. It occurs worldwide, but is most common in sub-Saharan Africa. The peak incidence of acute noma is at ages 1-4 years, coinciding with the period of linear growth retardation in deprived children. Noma is a scourge in communities with poor environmental sanitation. It results from complex interactions between malnutrition, infections, and compromised immunity. Diseases that commonly precede noma include measles, malaria, severe diarrhoea, and necrotisi

Dyskeratosis congenita (DKC) is a rare syndrome characterized by cutaneous hyperpigmentation, nail dystrophy, leukoplakia, and pancytopenia. The purpose of this case study was to describe the management of a 7-year-old girl diagnosed with DKC who urgently needed dental treatment under general anesthesia before bone marrow transplantation (BMT). The patient presented normal skin, nails, and hair, but oral examination revealed a number of ulcers, leukoplakia, gingival recessions, alveolar bone loss, and dental caries. Hematologic preparation included raising blood parameters, and the anesthesiol

The microbial etiology of gingivitis and periodontitis provides the rationale for use of adjunctive antimicrobial agents in the prevention and treatment of periodontal diseases. Although mechanical removal of supra- and subgingival calcified and non-calcified plaque deposits has been proved effective to control the gingival inflammatory lesions as well as to halt the progression of periodontal attachment loss, some patients may experience additional benefits from the use of systemic or topical antimicrobial agents. Such agents are able to significantly affect supra- and subgingival plaque accu

Analysis of Egyptian hieroglyphics and medical papyri indicate that non-surgical periodontal treatment was common 3000-4000 years ago. Even today, scaling and root planing (SRP) remains an essential part of successful periodontal therapy. The collective evidence from numerous clinical trials reveals a consistency of clinical response in the treatment of chronic periodontitis by SRP using manual, sonic, or ultrasonic instrumentation. Thus, SRP remains the 'gold standard' to which more recently developed therapeutic modalities must be compared. Inherent to the clinical evaluation of SRP are such

The objective of this study was to evaluate the orientation of collagen in the canine gingival connective tissue to a titanium surface (TI), and to hydroxyapatite coatings applied by plasma-spraying (HAPS) and ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD), on the supracrestal region of dental implants after 3 and 4 months. The effects of induced peri-implantitis on the soft connective tissue apposed to the implant were also evaluated. The use of these three surface types allowed for the evaluation of the effects of chemical composition (TI vs. IBAD; same topography) and topography (HAPS vs. IBAD; simila

The ultimate goal of periodontal therapy is to restore periodontal tissues lost through disease or trauma. The most predictable way to accomplish this goal is by guided tissue regeneration (GTR). The principle of GTR is to give preference to certain cells to repopulate the wound area to form a new attachment apparatus. Clinically this is accomplished by placing a barrier over the defect thereby excluding gingival tissues from the wound during early healing. The first generation of GTR barriers were non-resorbable which implies that they have to be removed in a second surgical procedure. Resorb

A monospecific and high titer polyclonal antibody, designated as Fas D, raised against synthetic polypeptides selected from a part of the human Fas antigen (aa 104-114), was used to identify the Fas antigen in human oral epithelia in normal and pathological states. The human gingival proteins had been extracted and analysed by an ABC (avidin-biotin complex) immunoblotting technique. The antibody interacted with a single band in gingival proteins with an estimated molecular weight of 35,000, which is in good agreement with that calculated from amino acid sequences of the human Fas antigen. This study evaluated the effect of a calculus scaling gel (SofScale) on time and ease of the scaling procedure in a double-blind, split-mouth clinical study of 32 subjects. The Volpe-Manhold calculus index was used to quantify the distribution and amount of calculus deposition on the lingual aspect of the mandibular 6 anterior teeth at baseline. The gel was applied directly to the calculus and subgingivally to the area to be scaled. Pre- and post-treatment gingival and stain indices were taken. Operator and subject questionnaires were completed immediately after treatment to determine ease of
