Outbreak of Empedobacter brevis endophthalmitis after cataract extraction.

BACKGROUND: We present a series of patients who were operated upon on the same day by the same surgeon. All of those patients developed postoperative endophthalmitis due to Empedobacter brevis - a bacterium hitherto unknown in ophthalmologic literature. METHODS: Twelve patients were referred because of endophthalmitis after cataract extraction. The patients' files were studied and the intraoperative and postoperative outcome was analysed. RESULTS: Twelve patients (five male, seven female, mean age 75 years) presented 1-6 days after uncomplicated cataract extraction. Although some suffered fr

Molecular Insights into the MdtABC Efflux Pump Genes in Clinical Salmonella typhi Isolates from Typhoid Patients.

INTRODUCTION: Typhoid fever is a potentially fatal systemic infection caused by Salmonella typhi (S. typhi), a Gram-negative, rod-shaped, facultative anaerobe. This study aimed to characterize the efflux pump genes, molecular mutations, and antibiotic susceptibility patterns in clinical isolates. METHODS: A total of 2950 blood samples were collected from suspected typhoid patients. Of these, 380 (12.88%) bacterial isolates were recovered, of which 236 (62.10%) were Gram-negative. S. typhi was detected in 95 isolates (25% of all bacterial isolates), corresponding to an overall prevalence of 3.

Contribution of macrophages and naive T cells during infection with E. coli in presence of exogenous cytokines on the autophagy-apoptosis pathway.

Escherichia coli (E. coli), a gram-negative bacterium typically found in the gastrointestinal tract, encompasses pathogenic strains that can lead to serious infections such as foodborne illnesses, sepsis, and urinary tract infections. The interaction between E. coli and immune cells, especially macrophages and T lymphocytes, is crucial for bacterial survival and evasion of the immune response. In this research, we utilized an in vitro co-culture model involving primary murine splenic macrophages and T cells to explore the contribution of different cytokines on autophagy, apoptosis, and phagocy

Lactoferrin/pectin nanocomplex encapsulating ciprofloxacin and naringin as a lung targeting antibacterial nanoplatform with oxidative stress alleviating effect.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic Gram-negative bacterium with adaptive metabolic abilities. It can cause hospital-acquired infections with significant mortality rates, particularly in people with already existing medical conditions. Its ability to develop resistance to common antibiotics makes managing this type of infections very challenging. Furthermore, oxidative stress is a common consequence of bacterial infection and antibiotic therapy, due to formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) during their mode of action. In this study we aimed to alleviate oxidative stress and enhance

Comparison of Suspected and Confirmed Internal External Ventricular Drain-Related Infections: A Prospective Multicenter United Kingdom Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of internal external ventricular drain (EVD)-related infections (iERI) is an area of diagnostic difficulty. Empiric treatment is often initiated on clinical suspicion. There is limited guidance around antimicrobial management of confirmed versus suspected iERI. METHODS: Data on patients requiring EVD insertion were collected from 21 neurosurgical units in the United Kingdom from 2014 to 2015. Confirmed iERI was defined as clinical suspicion of infection with positive cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) culture and/or Gram stain. Cerebrospinal fluid, blood, and clinical parameters

Odontogenic bacteria in periodontal disease and resistance patterns to common antibiotics used as treatment and prophylaxis in odontology in Spain.

Resistance in streptococci or Gram-negative bacteria is associated with antibiotic consumption. Scarce information exists on the antibiotic susceptibility of bacterial isolates from patients with periodontitis in countries with high antibiotic consumption, as this is an area in which microbiological testing is not performed in daily practice. The present study was undertaken to explore the susceptibility of bacterial isolates in periodontitis to antibiotics prescribed in odontology in Spain as treatment for local infections or prophylaxis for distant focal infections. Periodontal samples were

Design and Biological Profiling of a Drug-like Chloropyridine Diamine as a Dual Antioxidant-Antimicrobial Lead: In Vitro Evaluation and In Silico Multi-Target Studies.

Bacterial and fungal infections, together with oxidative stress-mediated damage, remain major challenges in human health and in the protection of materials, highlighting the need for new multifunctional molecules that combine antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. In this context, a new chloropyridine-based derivative, N4,N4-bis((6-chloropyridin-3-yl)methyl)-N1,N1-diethylpentane-1,4-diamine (AMZ), was synthesized via a simple, catalyst-free N-alkylation of N1,N1-diethylpentane-1,4-diamine with 2-chloro-4-(chloromethyl)pyridine in acetonitrile at 55 °C, affording a 62% yield. The structure o

Antimicrobial and probiotic potential of Lactobacillus from traditional dairy products against uropathogenic gram-negative bacteria.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most prevalent bacterial infections and are increasingly complicated by the emergence of multidrug-resistant uropathogens. The present study investigated the probiotic potential and anti-uropathogenic activity of Lactobacillus strains isolated from traditional dairy products in western Algeria using combined in vitro screening and an in vivo rat model of UTI. Uropathogenic bacteria recovered from urine samples of female patients were identified as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, and Proteus vulgaris using standard microb

Improving the Therapeutic Index of Smp24, a Venom-Derived Antimicrobial Peptide: Increased Activity against Gram-Negative Bacteria.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are naturally occurring compounds which possess a rapid killing mechanism and low resistance potential. Consequently, they are being viewed as potential alternatives to traditional antibiotics. One of the major factors limiting further development of AMPs is off-target toxicity. Enhancements to antimicrobial peptides which can maximise antimicrobial activity whilst reducing mammalian cytotoxicity would make these peptides more attractive as future pharmaceuticals. We have previously characterised Smp24, an AMP derived from the venom of the scorpion Scorpio maurus

Capnocytophaga canimorsus peritonitis diagnosed by mass spectrometry in a diabetic patient undergoing peritoneal dialysis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial peritonitis is a serious complication of patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). Although the identification of causative organisms and use of appropriate antibiotics are essential for treatment, rare and fastidious bacteria are sometimes difficult to detect by conventional biochemical assays. Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a fastidious and slow-growing bacterium that forms a part of the normal oral flora of dogs and cats and is extremely rare as a peritonitis-causing organism. This report demonstrates the usefulness of a mass spectrometry-based technique in identifyi

Repeated handling compromises the immune suppression and improves the disease resistance in overwintering channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus).

In winter, fish have suppressed immune functions and are susceptible to bacteria or virus which may lead to a high mortality. It is necessary to improve the immune response and disease resistance for overwintering fish. A recent study suggested that repeated handling increased the innate immune mechanisms and disease resistance in Senegalese sole. Therefore, the present study tested the hypothesis that appropriate repeated handling could compromise the immune depression and increase the disease resistance in channel catfish over winter. The experiment was carried out in field cages from Nov. 2

Effects of repeated handling and air exposure on the immune response and the disease resistance of gibel carp (Carassius auratus gibelio) over winter.

High mortalities and suppressed immune functions of farmed fish over winter are the universal problems in aquaculture. It is necessary to improve the immune response and disease resistance in the overwintering fish. A recent study suggested that repeated handling increased innate immune mechanisms and disease resistance in Senegalese sole. Therefore, the present study evaluated the hypothesis that appropriate repeated handling could compromise the immune depression and increase the disease resistance in gibel carp over winter. A host lipase detoxifies bacterial lipopolysaccharides in the liver and spleen.

Much of the inflammatory response of the body to bloodborne Gram-negative bacteria occurs in the liver and spleen, the major organs that remove these bacteria and their lipopolysaccharide (LPS, endotoxin) from the bloodstream. We show here that LPS undergoes deacylation in the liver and spleen by acyloxyacyl hydrolase (AOAH), an endogenous lipase that selectively removes the secondary fatty acyl chains that are required for LPS recognition by its mammalian signaling receptor, MD-2-TLR4. We further show that Kupffer cells produce AOAH and are required for hepatic LPS deacylation in vivo. AOAH-d

Pseudooutbreak of Pantoea species bacteremia associated with contaminated cotton pledgets.

A total of 22 isolates of Pantoea strains, unusual causative agents of clinical infection, was isolated from blood cultures from 9 patients and 1 ear swab from 1 of the patients within a period of 1 month in a tertiary-care hospital. Pseudooutbreak was suspected because specimens were collected from a limited number of places and the patients did not show consistent signs or symptoms of bacterial sepsis. Enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and partial 16S ribosomal DNA sequencing were performed to determine the clonal relationship among the is
