Maternal prenatal lead levels and neonatal brain volumes: Testing moderations by maternal depressive symptoms and family income.

There is considerable evidence that prenatal lead exposure is detrimental to child cognitive and socio-emotional development. Further evidence suggests that the effects of prenatal lead on developmental outcomes may be conditional upon exposure to social stressors, such as maternal depression and low socioeconomic status. However, no studies have examined associations between these co-occurring stressors during pregnancy and neonatal brain volumes. Leveraging a sample of 101 mother-infant dyads followed beginning in mid-pregnancy, we examined the main effects of prenatal urinary lead levels on

Biological variation in cervical spinal cord MRI morphometry in healthy individuals and people with multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Conclusions from prior literature regarding the impact of sex, age, and height on spinal cord (SC) MRI morphometrics are conflicting, while the effect of body weight on SC morphometrics has been found to be nonsignificant. The purpose of this case-control study is to assess the associations between cervical SC MRI morphometric parameters and age, sex, height, and weight to establish their potential role as confounding variables in a clinical study of people with multiple sclerosis (MS) compared to a cohort of healthy volunteers. METHODS: Sixty-nine healthy volunteers a

Septo-optic dysplasia plus: A case report for reviewing and recognizing this condition.

Septo-optic dysplasia is a congenital neurological condition with multifactorial etiology, characterized by septum pellucidum agenesis and/or corpus callosum dysgenesis, hypoplasia of the chiasm or optic nerves, and hormonal dysfunction with pituitary or hypothalamic alterations. Diagnosis requires two of these criteria and magnetic resonance is the imaging test of choice. Most cases present with abnormalities of cortical development in the form known as septo-optic dysplasia plus. While seizures and neurodevelopmental disorders are the dominant neurological manifestations, this entity is high

An Autopsy-proven Case-based Review of Autoimmune Encephalitis.

Autoimmune encephalitis (AIE) is a type of immunoreactive encephalitic disorder and is recognized as the most prevalent noninfectious encephalitis. Nevertheless, the rarity of definitive AIE diagnosis through biopsy or autopsy represents a significant hurdle to understanding and managing the disease. In this article, we present the pathological findings of AIE and review the literature based on a distinct case of AIE presenting as CD8+ T-lymphocyte predominant encephalitis. We describe the clinical progression, diagnostic imaging, laboratory data, and autopsy findings of an 80-year-old decease

Manual Segmentation of the Human Choroid Plexus Using Brain MRI.

The choroid plexus has been implicated in neurodevelopment and a range of brain disorders. Evidence demonstrates that the choroid plexus is critical for brain maturation, immune/ inflammatory regulation, and behavioral/cognitive functioning. However, current automated neuroimaging segmentation tools are poor at accurately and reliably segmenting the lateral ventricle choroid plexus. Furthermore, there is no existing tool that segments the choroid plexus located in the third and fourth ventricles of the brain. Thus, a protocol delineating how to segment the choroid plexus in the lateral, third,

New Perspectives in Radiological and Radiopharmaceutical Hybrid Imaging in Progressive Supranuclear Palsy: A Systematic Review.

Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by four-repeat tau deposition in various cell types and anatomical regions, and can manifest as several clinical phenotypes, including the most common phenotype, Richardson's syndrome. The limited availability of biomarkers for PSP relates to the overlap of clinical features with other neurodegenerative disorders, but identification of a growing number of biomarkers from imaging is underway. One way to increase the reliability of imaging biomarkers is to combine different modalities for multimodal imaging. This r

[Research progress on the effects of childhood obstructive sleep apnea syndrome on cognition and brain functions].

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), a prevalent sleep disorder in children, is characterized by recurring upper airway obstruction during sleep. OSAS in children can cause intermittent hypoxia and sleep fragmentation, ultimately affect brain development and further lead to cognitive impairment if lack of timely effective intervention. In recent years, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and electroencephalogram (EEG) have been employed to investigate brain structure and function abnormalities in children with OSAS. Previous studies have indicated that children with OSAS showed extensive gray

Investigation of brain iron in anorexia nervosa, a quantitative susceptibility mapping study.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a potentially fatal psychiatric condition, associated with structural brain changes such as gray matter volume loss. The pathophysiological mechanisms for these changes are not yet fully understood. Iron is a crucial element in the development and function of the brain. Considering the systemic alterations in iron homeostasis in AN, we hypothesized that brain iron would be altered as a possible factor associated with structural brain changes in AN. METHODS: In this study, we used quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) magnetic resonance imaging to inves

Voxel-based dysconnectomic brain morphometry with computed tomography in Down syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a major health concern for aging adults with Down syndrome (DS), but conventional diagnostic techniques are less reliable in those with severe baseline disability. Likewise, acquisition of magnetic resonance imaging to evaluate cerebral atrophy is not straightforward, as prolonged scanning times are less tolerated in this population. Computed tomography (CT) scans can be obtained faster, but poor contrast resolution limits its function for morphometric analysis. We implemented an automated analysis of CT scans to characterize differences across dementia s

Acanthoscurria gomesiana spider-derived Mygalin in the prelimbic prefrontal cortex modulates neuropathic pain and depression comorbid.

Depression has a high rate of comorbidity with neuropathic pain. This study aims to investigate the effect of Mygalin, an acylpolyamine synthesized from a natural molecule in the hemolymph of the Acanthoscurria gomesiana spider, injected into the prelimbic (PrL) region of the medial prefrontal cortex on chronic neuropathic pain and depression comorbidity in rats. To investigate that comorbidity, neuropathic pain was induced by chronic constriction injury (CCI) of the sciatic nerve in male Wistar rats. The biotinylated biodextran amine (BDA) bidirectional neural tract tracer was microinjected i

Neurocysticercosis mimicking craniopharyngioma: A case report.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: In patients with appropriate epidemiological risk factors, neurocysticecosis should be considered as part of the differential diagnosis of suprasellar or parasellar mass lesions. As neuroimaging findings can be nonspecific, serology may be helpful, but when still in doubt, brain biopsy, and histopathology may be necessary to make the correct diagnosis. ABSTRACT: Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a well-documented central nervous system helminth infection that is, frequently observed in developing countries. Known sites of NCC infection include the highly vascular gray-white ma

Tau Pathology in Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy is Primarily Neuronal.

Millions of individuals are exposed to repetitive head impacts (RHI) each year through contact sports, military blast, and interpersonal violence. RHI is the major risk factor for developing chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a neurodegenerative tauopathy. Recent consensus criteria defined the pathognomonic lesion in CTE as perivascular, hyperphosphorylated tau (p-tau) in neuronal aggregates. Astroglial p-tau is an inconsistent supporting feature and not in itself diagnostic of CTE. This study quantitated the spatial and cellular distribution of p-tau pathology in postmortem dorsolateral

Severe spinal cord hypoplasia due to a novel ATAD3A compound heterozygous deletion.

Biallelic deletions extending into the ATPase family AAA-domain containing protein 3A (ATAD3A) gene lead to infantile lethality with severe pontocerebellar hypoplasia (PCH). However, only 12 such cases have been reported worldwide to date, and the genotype-phenotype correlations are not well understood. We describe cases associated with the same novel biallelic deletions of the ATAD3A and ATAD3B/3A regions in Japanese siblings with severe spinal cord hypoplasia and multiple malformations, including PCH, leading to neonatal death. The ATAD3A protein is essential for normal interaction between m

Lower motor neuron involvement in patients with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Involvement of the central gray matter of spinal cord is a characteristic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) feature of aquaporin-4-immunoglobulin G antibodies (AQP4-IgG) positive neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD). However, there has been no systemic electrophysiological study investigating the frequency of lower motor neuron involvement in NMOSD patients. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed a cohort of 59 NMOSD patients with results of concentric needle electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS) that were admitted to the Department of Neurology of Chin

A Transfer Learning Approach for Early Diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease on MRI Images.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) detection using magnetic resonance image (MRI), plays a crucial role in the treatment of dementia disease at an early stage. Deep learning architecture produces impressive results in such research. Algorithms require a large number of annotated datasets for training the model. In this study, we overcome this issue by using layer-wise transfer learning as well as tissue segmentation of brain images to diagnose the early stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD). In layer-wise transfer learning, we used the VGG architecture family with pre-trained weights. The proposed mo

Entorhinal cortex and parahippocampus volume reductions impact olfactory decline in aged subjects.

INTRODUCTION: Pathological abnormalities first appear in the medial temporal regions including entorhinal cortex and parahippocampus in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Previous studies showed that olfactory decline in elderly subjects was associated with volume reductions in the left hippocampus and left parahippocampus without cognitive impairment. The aim of this study is to investigate the link between olfaction and volume reductions in the medial temporal regions including the parahippocampus, entorhinal cortex, and hippocampal subfields. METHOD: 27 elderly subjects and 27 young contro

Two New Cases of Primary Microcephaly with Neuronal Migration Defect Caused by Truncating Mutations in the ASPM Gene.

Autosomal recessive primary microcephaly (MCPH) is a uncommon disorder due to congenital deficiency in the development of the cerebral cortex, characterized by a head circumference below 2 SD. MCPH is a group of diseases with genetic heterogeneity and has been reported by the Online Mendelian Inheritance In Man® (OMIM) database and associated with 25 different genes. It is known that MCPH cases are most frequently associated with abnormal spindle-like, microcephaly-associated (ASPM) gene mutations. The ASPM protein consists of an N-terminal 81 IQ (isoleucine-glutamine) domain, a calponin-homol
