Calcitriol-resistant rickets with alopecia.

Four children of two kindred had alopecia associated with severe rickets, resistant to treatment, and caused by defective cytoplasmic and nuclear receptors for the active vitamin D metabolite calcitriol (1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3). Scalp biopsy specimen revealed a normal number and light microscopic features of the hair and hair follicles. Calcitriol-resistant rickets should be added to the list of inherited disorders of hair growth, and the association of rickets with alopecia needs to be considered in the differential diagnosis of hair loss.

Treatment of canine otitis externa using video otoscopy.

Otitis externa in 27 toy poodles and 40 miniature dachshunds was treated using a video otoscope. A distinct concavity (external tympanic concavity) was observed at the junction between the ventral part of the external surface of the tympanum and the ear canal to which a considerable amount of hair and debris had adhered. All hair and debris adhering to the external tympanic concavity were removed, and systemic antibiotic and antifungal agents were administered, after which all of the dogs recovered. The pattern of hair growth observed in the external tympanic concavity could be characterized a

The assessment of trichotillomania.

Trichotillomania is a disorder characterized by hair-pulling and resulting hair loss. Hair is usually pulled from the scalp, eyelashes, eyebrows, beard, and pubic area. Sufferers often resort to wearing wigs or elaborate hair styles and make-up to camouflage bald patches. It occurs more frequently in women and is associated with considerable distress. The two treatments of choice currently are pharmacotherapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy. The choice of assessment procedures includes self-monitoring, saving hairs, interview, observational rating, digital photograph and computer scoring, sig

Photoletter to the editor: The Friar Tuck sign in trichotillomania.

Trichotillomania (TTM) is an impulse-control disorder, in which patients chronically pull hair from the scalp and/or other sites. We herein report a 8-year-old male patient who developed TTM in the classical tonsure pattern ("Friar Tuck" sign). The diagnosis was confirmed by trichoscopy, which showed decreased hair density, broken hairs with different shaft lengths, black dots, signs of hemorrhage, and an absence of exclamation mark hairs.

Permanent poliosis following repetitive plucking in an adolescent.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: poliosis is an inherited or acquired loss of pigment from a group of closely positioned hair follicles characterized by a patch of white hair. It is commonly seen in vitiligo, piebaldism, Waardenburg syndrome, Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome, Griscelli syndrome, and Apert syndrome. We investigated a male manifesting poliosis on the chin after repetitive plucking. CONCLUSION: to our knowledge, poliosis induced by repeated plucking has never been documented.

Conditions simulating androgenetic alopecia.

Androgenetic alopecia is a common form of hair loss, characterized by a progressive hair follicular miniaturization, caused by androgen hormones on a genetically susceptible hair follicle, in androgenic-dependent areas. Characteristic phenotype of androgenetic alopecia is also observed in many other hair disorders. These disorders are androgenetic-like diseases that cause many differential diagnosis or therapeutic error problems. The objective of this review was to systematically analyse the greatest number of conditions that mimic the AGA pattern and explain their disease pathogenesis.

Topical odorant application of the specific olfactory receptor OR2AT4 agonist, Sandalore® , improves telogen effluvium-associated parameters.

BACKGROUND: Human hair follicles (HFs) express the olfactory receptor (OR)2AT4, which is selectively stimulated by the synthetic sandalwood-like odorant, Sandalore® . In organ-cultured, human scalp HFs, Sandalore® prolongs anagen and suppresses apoptosis by up-regulating intrafollicular IGF-1 mediated signaling. AIMS: The objective of this study is to demonstrate whether effects of Sandalore® observed ex vivo translate into a clinically relevant effect in patients with telogen effluvium. PATIENTS/METHODS: In a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, clinical trial, 60 female voluntee

Ultrastructural findings in a case of Menière's disease.

The temporal bones of an individual with documented unilateral Meniere's disease were prepared for light and electron microscopy. A morphometric analysis was performed on hair cells, spiral ganglion cells, dendritic fibers in the osseous spiral lamina, afferent and efferent endings, and afferent synaptic contacts. In the ear with Meniere's disease, we found hair cell damage, including disruption of the cuticular bodies and basalward displacement of some outer hair cells. There was no significant difference in the number of hair cells or spiral ganglion cells on the two sides. There was a signi

Treatment modalities for lymphocytic and neutrophilic scarring alopecia.

Primary cicatricial alopecia can result in permanent hair loss from the destruction of hair follicles. Early intervention is key in controlling disease progression, reducing symptoms, and optimizing hair density. Treatment modalities range from topical and intralesional therapies to oral medications and light therapy.

Multiple nevoid hypertrichosis as an isolated developmental defect.

A 3-year-old girl presented with longer hair on the left side of her scalp, coarse hair of abnormal length on her extremities, and a tuft of hair in the lumbosacral region, with all hair distributed on normally pigmented skin. Neither similar or relevant family history nor associated extracutaneous abnormalities was detected after a thorough examination. Clinical diagnosis of patchy nevoid hypetrichosis was confirmed by histology. Nevoid hypertrichosis is a rare hair growth disorder that usually presents at or soon after birth. It is characterized by patches of hypertrichosis distributed in a

Effectiveness and safety of the combination therapy of micro-needling and minoxidil in androgenetic alopecia of Indonesian men: a randomized controlled trial.

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the most common type of hair loss. Treatment options are limited. Microneedling, a minimally invasive technique can enhance hair growth by releasing growth factors. However, no standardized protocol for frequency, depth and duration is available. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness and safety of the combination therapy of microneedling and minoxidil in AGA. This study was a randomized controlled clinical trial conducted over 12 weeks. The intervention group received a 4-weekly combination therapy of microneedling + 5% minoxidil, while the control grou

Prevention and Treatment of Chemotherapy-Induced Alopecia: What Is Available and What Is Coming?

Millions of new cancer patients receive chemotherapy each year. In addition to killing cancer cells, chemotherapy is likely to damage rapidly proliferating healthy cells, including the hair follicle keratinocytes. Chemotherapy causes substantial thinning or loss of hair, termed chemotherapy-induced alopecia (CIA), in approximately 65% of patients. CIA is often ranked as one of the most distressing adverse effects of chemotherapy, but interventional options have been limited. To date, only scalp cooling has been cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to prevent CIA. However, sever

Secondary alopecia induced by aesthetic procedures: An unrecognized potential complication.

Surgical facelifts and noninvasive techniques such as mesotherapy, hyaluronic fillers and botulinum toxin, among other procedures are widely used nowadays to reverse skin ageing and achieve rejuvenation effects. Secondary alopecia due to cosmetic procedures is a rare side effect and is poorly described in the literature. The mechanisms in which hair loss develops after an aesthetical procedure or surgical technique are not well known. The development of secondary scarring alopecia or non-scarring alopecia depends upon the interaction between different external factors, the individual host resp

Platelet-Rich Plasma for Androgenetic Alopecia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) contains a variety of growth factors and has been widely used in maxillofacial surgery, orthopedics, plastic surgery, ophthalmology, and other fields. In recent years, with the increasing morbidity of androgenetic alopecia (AGA), the use of PRP has also increased. The objective of this article was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of PRP for AGA. We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library, covering the databases from their earliest records until March 2022. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCT

A systematic review of acute telogen effluvium, a harrowing post-COVID-19 manifestation.

This systematic review focuses on the clinical features, physical examination findings, outcomes, and underlying pathology of acute telogen effluvium (TE), a type of diffuse hair loss, occurring in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) recovered patients. MEDLINE/PubMed and Embase databases were queried till October 2021 to identify studies reporting acute TE occurring after COVID-19 recovery. Data were obtained from 19 studies, which included 465 patients who were diagnosed with acute TE. The median age of these patients was 44 years and 67.5% were females. The most common trichoscopic findings

Transglutaminase 3: The Involvement in Epithelial Differentiation and Cancer.

Transglutaminases (TGMs) contribute to the formation of rigid, insoluble macromolecular complexes, which are essential for the epidermis and hair follicles to perform protective and barrier functions against the environment. During differentiation, epidermal keratinocytes undergo structural alterations being transformed into cornified cells, which constitute a highly tough outermost layer of the epidermis, the stratum corneum. Similar processes occur during the hardening of the hair follicle and the hair shaft, which is provided by the enzymatic cross-linking of the structural proteins and ker

Noise-induced and age-related hearing loss:  new perspectives and potential therapies.

The classic view of sensorineural hearing loss has been that the primary damage targets are hair cells and that auditory nerve loss is typically secondary to hair cell degeneration. Recent work has challenged that view. In noise-induced hearing loss, exposures causing only reversible threshold shifts (and no hair cell loss) nevertheless cause permanent loss of >50% of the synaptic connections between hair cells and the auditory nerve. Similarly, in age-related hearing loss, degeneration of cochlear synapses precedes both hair cell loss and threshold elevation. This primary neural degeneration

Vestibular destruction by slow infusion of gentamicin into semicircular canals.

Intratympanic or round window application of gentamicin is often used to alleviate disabling vertigo arising from unilateral Meniere's disease; however, treatment is often accompanied by hearing loss because the drug initially enters the cochlea before diffusing to the vestibular system. In order to enhance vestibular damage and reduce the risk of hearing loss, gentamicin was infused directly into the vestibular system. An osmotic pump containing 50, 100, 200 or 400 microg/ml of gentamicin was infused into the superior semicircular canal of the chinchilla for 7 days. Afterwards, vestibular dam

Postoperative pressure-induced alopecia: report of a case and discussion of the role of apoptosis in non-scarring alopecia.

We report a case of postoperative pressure induced alopecia in a 21-year-old black female after multiple intraoperative procedures. The histopathology is distinctive and demonstrated features in common with trichotillomania and alopecia areata, including the presence of pigment casts, catagen follicles, melanophages and apoptotic bodies. External hair manipulation is considered the primary event in the etiology of pigment casts, however, our present case demonstrated numerous pigment casts despite a complete lack of evidence of external hair manipulation. A Rare Type of Radiation-Induced Alopecia: Proton-Induced Alopecia.

INTRODUCTION: Radiation-induced alopecia (RIA) is a side effect resulting from cranial radiation therapy (RT) and it can be temporary or permanent. In cancer patients, RIA is a less frequent event than chemotherapy-induced alopecia, although the former is more likely to cause permanent hair loss. It is characterized initially by intense anagen effluvium caused by acute dose-dependent damage to the matrix cells of anagen follicles. Proton therapy (PT) is a specific type of RT used in the treatment of brain tumors, which sometimes can cause proton-induced alopecia (PIA), a rare subtype of RIA. B
