Nutrition of the elderly.

The progressively increasing number of elderly people in the Canadian population and the disproportionate expenditure on their health care has stimulated interest in prevention of common illnesses observed in this age group. It is now recognized that nutrition plays an important role in health status, and both undernutrition and overnutrition are associated with greater risk of morbidity and mortality. Nutritional problems in the elderly can be suspected if there are several high-risk factors present--for example, living alone, physical or mental disability, recent loss of spouse or friend, we

The invisible elderly: lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender older adults.

More than 2 million older adults identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT). The purpose of this article is to present an overview of the physical and mental health needs of LGBT older adults to sensitize nurses to the specific needs of this group. Nurses are in a prominent position to create health care environments that will meet the needs of this invisible, and often misunderstood, group of people.

Protection from Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Research in the management of chronic musculoskeletal pain often focuses on negative factors associated with poor outcomes. In contrast, strengths-based approaches attempt to identify factors associated with positive outcomes, referred to as protective factors. Significant potential value lies in understanding protective factors in chronic musculoskeletal pain to deliver strengths-based care. This scoping review aimed to identify protective factors associated with lower pain-related disability or higher physical function in adults with chronic musculoskeletal pain. D

Exercise training is associated with changes in adipocyte size and lipid metabolism in older women: cross-sectional and longitudinal study.

Adaptations in subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) metabolism may contribute to cardiometabolic health improvements in response to exercise training, especially during aging. Here we investigated the potential effects of long- and short-term exercise on adipogenesis and lipid metabolism in adipose tissue of older women (age 61-80 years). The effects of long-term (> 5 years) physical activity and short-term (4 months) exercise training were evaluated, with a focus on adipocyte size, adipogenic capacity, gene expression related to lipolysis, lipogenesis, and peroxisomal β-oxidation, along with lip

Measuring change in school-based practices that promote children's healthy eating and active living: a psychometric study.

BACKGROUND: Public health interventions targeting youth nutrition and physical activity often focus on changing policies, systems, and environments (PSE) in schools. To support rigorous evaluation of PSE efforts, this study examined whether the School Site-Level Assessment Questionnaire (SLAQ), a self-assessment instrument for schools serving grades kindergarten through 12 (K-12), was sufficiently sensitive to measure changes in schools’ nutrition and physical activity practices in response to interventions. METHODS: This longitudinal, observational study included 69 K-12 schools in low-income

Wound management, healing, and early prosthetic rehabilitation: Part 2 - A scoping review of physical biomarkers.

BACKGROUND: The timely provision of load-bearing prostheses significantly reduces healthcare costs and lowers post-amputation mortality risk. However, current methods for assessing residuum health remain subjective, underscoring the need for standardized, evidence-based approaches incorporating physical biomarkers to evaluate residual limb healing and determine readiness for prosthetic rehabilitation. OBJECTIVES: This review aimed to identify predictive, diagnostic, and indicative physical biomarkers of healing of the tissues and structures found in the residual limbs of adults with amputatio

Investigating the effects of synbiotic supplementation on functional movement, strength and muscle health in older Australians: a study protocol for a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Aging has been associated with a progressive loss of skeletal muscle quality, quantity and strength, which may result in a condition known as sarcopenia, leading to a decline in physical performance, loss of independence and reduced quality of life. While the cause of impaired physical functioning observed in elderly populations appears to be multifactorial, recent evidence suggests that age-associated alterations in gut microbiota could be a contributing factor. The primary objective will be to assess the effects of a dietary synbiotic formulation on sarcopenia-related functional

Association of lifestyle behaviors with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and advanced fibrosis detected by transient elastography among Hispanic/Latinos adults in the U.S.

OBJECTIVES: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a highly prevalent liver disease, with the highest prevalence observed in the U.S. among Hispanic/Latino adults. While physical activity and dietary behaviors have established protective associations with NAFLD and its severity, these associations have not been well-characterized in Hispanic/Latino adults. The purpose of this study was to assess the association of lifestyle behaviors with NAFLD and advanced fibrosis in US Hispanic/Latino adults. DESIGN: We selected all Hispanic/Latino adults from the 2017-2018 National Health and Nutrit

He's just content to sit: a qualitative study of mothers' perceptions of infant obesity and physical activity.

BACKGROUND: Rates of obesity among children ages zero to five are rapidly increasing. Greater efforts are needed to promote healthy behaviors of young children. Mothers are especially important targets for promoting health as mothers' views play a vital role in helping their children foster healthy habits from an early age. Research has found parents' views of infants' weight may influence their feeding practices; however, limited research has explored mothers' view of infants' weight in relation to the promotion of physical activity. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the per

Health Equity Among Black Women in the United States.

Black women in the United States have experienced substantial improvements in health during the last century, yet health disparities persist. These health disparities are in large part a reflection of the inequalities experienced by Black women on a host of social and economic measures. In this paper, we examine the structural contributors to social and economic conditions that create the landscape for persistent health inequities among Black women. Demographic measures related to the health status and health (in)equity of Black women are reviewed. Current rates of specific physical and mental

Unpacking the relationship between autism, sport participation, and adolescent health: A causal mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND: Autistic children are less likely to participate in sport than non-autistic children, and sport participation may improve health and health related quality of life. It is therefore possible that sport participation may partially mediate the association between autism and adolescent health and health related quality of life. Sport participation may have distinct effects for autistic and non-autistic children, and these effects may also differ between team and individual sports. OBJECTIVES: The study had two objectives. First, to estimate cumulative effects of sport participation (t
