The role of the social determinants of health in outcomes of surgery for low back pain: a systematic review and narrative synthesis.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Low back pain is a major cause of morbidity and disability worldwide and is responsible for vast societal impact. Rates of surgical intervention for lumbar spine disorders continue to rise but poor outcomes remain common. Understanding how the social determinants of health (SDH) influence spinal surgical outcomes stands to inform appropriately tailored care practices and lead to better patient outcomes. PURPOSE: To determine the relationships between the SDH and pain, opioid use, disability and work absenteeism following lumbar spine surgery. STUDY DESIGN: Systematic revi

Predictors of change in BMI over 10 years among midlife and older adults: Associations with gender, CVD risk status, depressive symptoms, and social support.

RATIONALE: Change in BMI is recognized as a key health indicator among midlife and older adults, though predictors of BMI change in this group have received little attention. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine relations between hypothesized predictors (i.e., gender, cardiovascular disease [CVD] risk status, depressive symptoms, social support) and BMI change over 10 years, among midlife and older adults. METHODS: Participants were adults ages 50-74 at baseline (N = 5,688, 64% women) who completed four assessments over 10 years. Gender, CVD risk status (i.e., diagnosis of hyperte

Insecticide resistance and detoxifying enzyme activity in the principal bancroftian filariasis vector, Culex quinquefasciatus, in northeastern India.

The insecticide resistance status of Culex quinquefasciatus Say (Diptera: Culicidae) to DDT and deltamethrin across army cantonments and neighbouring villages in northeastern India was investigated. In India, DDT is still the insecticide of choice for public health programmes. In military stations, pyrethroids, especially deltamethrins, are used for insecticide-treated nets (ITNs). Recent information on the levels of resistance to DDT and deltamethrin in mosquito populations of northeastern India is scare. Continued monitoring of insecticide resistance status, identification of the underlying

Vitamin A status of children in five Ecuadorian provinces.

In mid-1993 Ecuador's Health Research Institute conducted a survey to evaluate the general nutrition and vitamin A status of children in five provinces (three in the mountains and two on the coast) containing pockets of extreme poverty. The survey enrolled 1555 children 12-59 months old who constituted a multi-phased stratified cluster sample obtained by random selection methods. Among its other aims, the survey sought to assess all or part of the study subjects' serum retinol levels, dietary vitamin A intake and ocular signs of vitamin A deficiency, and to weigh the influence on vitamin A sta

Digital development and health in China: a serial pathway model through internet use and physical exercise in repeated cross-sectional surveys.

BACKGROUND: Digital exclusion extends beyond access to whether digital participation is associated with health-promoting behavior and health-related outcomes. Physical exercise may form one behavioral link between digital participation and health, but the strength of this sequence may differ across sociodemographic groups. METHODS: We harmonized the 2013, 2018, and 2023 Chinese General Social Survey, including 29,295 adults across 31 provincial-level units. These waves were deliberately selected at approximately 5-year intervals to provide repeated cross-sectional snapshots across a 10-year p

Dietary intake remains unchanged while nutritional status improves in children and adults with cystic fibrosis on Elexacaftor/Tezacaftor/Ivacaftor.

BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disorder involving multi-organ dysfunction, with nutritional status playing a crucial role in disease progression. Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane conductance Regulator (CFTR) modulator therapy, particularly the combination Elexacaftor/Tezacaftor/Ivacaftor (ETI), has shown numerous clinical benefits, including significant improvements in nutritional status. However, the factors driving this nutritional improvement, especially the potential role of increased dietary intake, remain underexplored. This study aimed to assess changes in nutritional status

Reduced Peak Bone Mass in Young Adults With Low Motor Competence.

Although suboptimal bone health has been reported in children and adolescents with low motor competence (LMC), it is not known whether such deficits are present at the time of peak bone mass. We examined the impact of LMC on bone mineral density (BMD) in 1043 participants (484 females) from the Raine Cohort Study. Participants had motor competence assessed using the McCarron Assessment of Neuromuscular Development at 10, 14, and 17 years, and a whole-body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan at 20 years. Bone loading from physical activity was estimated from the International Physical A

Treatment algorithms for managing hepatocellular carcinoma.

Early diagnosis and aggressive therapy improves outcome in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Several potentially curative as well as palliative treatment options are available for patients. The choice of therapy is influenced by factors such as extent of tumor and severity of underlying liver dysfunction as well as availability of resources and of expertise. A systematic, algorithmic approach would ensure optimal therapy for each patient and is likely to improve outcomes. Even after receiving therapy for HCC, patients remain at risk for recurrent HCC as well as progression of underlying cirrhosi

The effect of soy food intake on mineral status in premenopausal women.

BACKGROUND: Soy foods have been substituted for meat in recent years because of proposed health benefits. Research indicates, however, that soy protein and phytate in soy products inhibit the absorption of divalent cations. METHODS: Our study was primarily designed to determine the effect of consuming two to three servings per day of soy foods, providing ∼19 g protein and ∼36 mg isoflavones, on iron and zinc status in premenopausal women during a 10-weeks period. As secondary outcomes, we also tested the effect of soy foods on biochemical markers of bone and thyroid hormones. Nonsmoking women

Bayesian analysis of risk factors for anovulation.

Two algorithms for assessing ovulatory status using daily urinary levels of oestrogen and progesterone metabolites have been applied to non-clinic-based, free-living populations of women. These relatively new methods for assessing ovarian function have been used to assess the potential adverse effects of occupational and environmental exposures, such as smoking, on the reproductive health of women. One algorithm has been validated against serum hormone measurements and gives good sensitivity and specificity for anovulation. However, a gold standard is generally not available in epidemiologic f

Summary Measure of Health-Related Quality of Life and Its Related Factors Based on the Chinese Version of the Core Healthy Days Measures: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: The core Healthy Days measures were used to track the population-level health status in the China Chronic Disease and Risk Factor Surveillance; however, they were not easily combined to create a summary of the overall health-related quality of life (HRQOL), limiting this indicator's use. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to develop a summary score based on the Chinese version of the core Healthy Days measures (HRQOL-5) and apply it to estimate HRQOL and its determinants in a Chinese population. METHODS: From November 2018 to May 2019, a multistage stratified cluster survey was conducted

Long-term consequences of surgical brain injury - characteristics of the neurovascular unit and formation and demise of the glial scar in a rat model.

INTRODUCTION: Early diagnosis of children living with HIV is a prerequisite for accessing timely paediatric HIV care and treatment services and for optimizing treatment outcomes. Testing of HIV-exposed infants at 6 weeks and later is part of the national prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV programme in Zimbabwe, but many opportunities to test infants and children are being missed. Early childhood development (ECD) playcentres can act as an entry point providing multiple health and social services for orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) under 5 years, including facilitat

Combined Assessment of Skeletal Muscle Mass Index and Extracellular-to-Intracellular Water Ratio Predicts Mortality and Health-Related Quality of Life in Hemodialysis Patients.

KEY POINTS: Both low skeletal muscle mass index and high extracellular and intracellular water independently predicted mortality; risk was highest when both abnormalities were present. Extracellular and intracellular water ≥0.66 indicated impaired muscle tissue integrity and helped identify vulnerable patients. Combining skeletal muscle mass index with extracellular and intracellular water identified patients with lower health-related quality of life across multiple domains. BACKGROUND: Decreased skeletal muscle mass is common in hemodialysis patients and contributes to adverse outcomes. Howe
