BACKGROUND: The increasing interface between human and non-human primate populations in urban centres presents a shared environmental health risk. This risk is particularly prominent at religious sites where close interactions are culturally motivated.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the prevalence and diversity of gastrointestinal (GI) parasites in free-ranging rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) at two UNESCO World Heritage sites in Kathmandu, Nepal.
METHODS: An opportunistic, non-invasive cross-sectional study was conducted in July and August 2024. Freshly voided faecal samples (N

PURPOSE: Flotation methods are widely used to detect oocysts/cysts of protozoans and eggs of helminths, except trematodes. However, details regarding the concentration and recovery rates of these parasites are poorly understood.
METHODS: Using Eimeria tenella oocysts as a model parasite, the present study evaluated three check points: (1) the proportion of parasites that remain floating in flotation solution (sucrose or saturated saline) during centrifugation, (2) the proportion of oocysts that naturally float after addition of flotation solution after centrifugation, and (3) the rate of reco

Zoonotic diseases caused by parasites of wildlife origin represent a global health problem. As a top mammalian predator, the brown bear (Ursus arctos) can spread various parasites, including those that are potentially hazardous to human health. However, data on brown bear parasite fauna in Europe, and especially its seasonal dynamics, are scarce. The aim of this study was to analyse brown bear gastrointestinal parasites (helminths and protozoa) and to investigate their seasonal dynamics. Brown bear scats were collected from the eastern part of Estonia during one year, from spring 2022 to sprin

Soil-transmitted helminthiases, caused by soil-transmitted helminths (commonly known as intestinal worms), are considered to be neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). In Thailand, school-age children (SAC) who live in remote areas are at risk of STH. A school-based combined intervention involving test and treat (TnT) and mass drug administration (MDA) programs has been implemented as part of the national STH control program since 2002, with a target to eliminate STH in SAC by 2026. To help achieve this target, we developed an STH transmission dynamic model, calibrated it using STH infection preva

Cyclospora cayetanensis, a food and waterborne pathogen, is responsible for prolonged diarrheal illness. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence, risk factors, and seasonal patterns of C. cayetanensis infection among diarrheal patients in eastern India. A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted. The overall prevalence of C. cayetanensis in the study region was determined to be 2.11%. The highest incidence (7%) was observed during the monsoon months, particularly in July and August. Children aged >5-12 years were the most susceptible group (17.8%, odds ratio [OR] = 47.45, P-va

A new genus and species of trematode, Paratestophis gelicolus gen. nov., sp. nov., is described from the large intestine of the rainbow water snake, Enhydris enhydris, collected from several provinces in southern Thailand. Morphological analyses reveal distinct characteristics that differentiate P. gelicolus gen. nov., sp. nov. from related echinochasmid taxa, specifically its elongated bottle-shaped body, presence of 22 collar spines, parallel testes and parasitism of snakes-features not observed in other echinochasmid genera. Multi-marker phylogenetic analyses (28S rRNA, 18S rRNA, ITS2 and C

The cytokine homologs, particularly transforming growth factor (TGF)-β, is a crucial immunomodulatory molecule and involved in growth and developmental processes in several helminths. In this study, the basic properties and functions of T. spiralis TGF-β homolog 2 (TsTGH2) were characterized using bioinformatics and molecular biology approaches. Bioinformatics analyses indicated that TsTGH2 belongs to the TGF-β subfamily. Recombinant TsTGH2 (rTsTGH2) expressed in Escherichia coli was used to produce a polyclonal antibody (pAb) in mice. Western blot and immunolocalization using pAb detected nat

Toxocara is a genus of nematodes, which infects a variety of hosts, principally dogs and cats, with potential zoonotic risks to humans. Toxocara spp. larvae are capable of migrating throughout the host tissues, eliciting eosinophilic and granulomatous reactions, while surviving for extended periods of time, unchanged, in the host. It is postulated that larvae are capable of altering the host's immune response through the release of excretory-secretory products, containing both proteins and extracellular vesicles (EVs). The study of EVs has increased exponentially in recent years, largely due t

Myocarditis is an inflammatory condition of cardiac tissue presenting significant variability in clinical manifestations and outcomes. Its etiology is diverse, encompassing infectious agents (primarily viruses, but also bacteria, protozoa, and helminths) and non-infectious factors (autoimmune responses, toxins, and drugs), though often the specific cause remains unidentified. Recent research has highlighted the potential role of genetic susceptibility in the development of myocarditis (and in some cases the development of inflammatory dilated cardiomyopathy, i.e., the condition in which there

BACKGROUND: The breeding population of the red-billed chough (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax) in Scotland has fallen in recent years, with all breeding pairs now confined to the Hebridean islands of Islay and Colonsay. Demographic studies have shown that a significant factor in the population decline on Islay has been reduced survival from fledging to 1 year of age (juveniles). Understanding the significance of infectious and non-infectious diseases in chough mortality is crucial to the development of successful management strategies aimed at conserving breeding populations of choughs in Scotland and

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of intestinal parasites is known to be high among Amerindian populations; further, there are serious problems in the healthcare of these populations in Brazil. The Maxakali, located in the northeastern region of Minas Gerais, Brazil, is an indigenous group that still preserves many of its cultural aspects. This study aimed to compare the positivity rate of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths in this ethnic group in epidemiological surveys conducted in 1972 and 2014.
METHODS: Stool parasitological examinations were performed by the Kato-Katz technique duri

More than two-hundred-million people are infected with filariae worldwide. However, there is no vaccine available that confers long-lasting protection against filarial infections. Previous studies indicated that vaccination with irradiated infective L3 larvae reduces the worm load. This present study investigated whether the additional activation of cytosolic nucleic acid receptors as an adjuvant improves the efficacy of vaccination with irradiated L3 larvae of the rodent filaria Litomosoides sigmodontis with the aim of identifying novel vaccination strategies for filarial infections. Albendazole (ABZ), a broad-spectrum anthelmintic drug frequently used in livestock against parasitic worms (helminths), enters the environment mainly via faeces of treated animals left in the pastures or used as dung for field fertilization. To obtain information about the subsequent fate of ABZ, the distribution of ABZ and its metabolites in the soil around faeces along with uptake and effects in plants were monitored under real agricultural conditions. Sheep were treated with a recommended dose of ABZ; faeces were collected and used to fertilize fields with fodder plants. Soil samples (in tw

Originally endemic to South America, the nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) has recently expanded its range northward to Illinois. With this range expansion comes concern regarding potential incoming pathogens; our research, conducted during 2012-2020, consisted of screening armadillos for the presence of helminths, Trypanosoma cruzi, and Mycobacterium leprae. We screened for the presence of T. cruzi and M. leprae, 2 pathogens known to infect humans, using polymerase chain reaction and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, respectively. All 80 samples screened for T. cruzi and all 25 sa

Type 2 inflammation is a complex immune response and primary mechanism for several common allergic diseases including allergic rhinitis, allergic asthma, atopic dermatitis, and chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps. It is the predominant type of immune response against helminths to prevent their tissue infiltration and induce their expulsion. Recent studies suggest that epithelial barrier dysfunction contributes to the development of type 2 inflammation in asthma, which may partly explain the increasing prevalence of asthma in China and around the globe. The epithelial barrier hypothesis ha

The São Tomé e Príncipe government is committed to achieving neglected tropical disease (NTD) control and elimination as a public health problem by 2025. In 2014, the Ministry of Health led a national survey to determine the prevalence of soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) and schistosomiasis across the country. Following this survey, a preventive chemotherapy (PC) campaign with mebendazole and praziquantel reached 31 501 school-age children in 2015. A follow-up 2017 survey to determine the impact of the intervention showed success in controlling schistosomiasis, as no infections were found, bu

INTRODUCTION: schistosomiasis is a public health concerns in many countries including Mali. In Kalabancoro District, during the 2017 assessments, the National schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths control program reported prevalence´s of 10.83% and 50.83% for urinary schistosomiasis and intestinal schistosomiasis respectively. This district recorded the highest prevalence of intestinal schistosomiasis among the 46 districts evaluated. To better understand these high rates, this study investigated the knowledge of schistosomiasis in children and adults in this district.

Anisakids are widespread marine parasites of medical, veterinary and economic relevance. They infect marine natural hosts but humans can accidentally acquire the fish-borne zoonosis anisakiasis by ingesting infected raw fishes or mollusks. Among the several species described, Anisakis pegreffii is one of the main etiological agent of the disease, in particular in the Mediterranean area. Despite the growing evidence of miRNAs involvement in host-parasite interplay, and the emerging role of exosomal microvesicles in shuttling them between different cell types (and sometime across species), no in

Japan has achieved significant improvements in the control and prevention of parasitic infections through a school-based approach since the 1930s. The use of chemical fertilizers in agriculture, safe water and food, and improved sanitation and hygiene also contributed to the near eradication of endemic parasites. However, parasite infections continued to affect children mostly in resource-limited countries. The African continent has one of the highest burdens of such infections. The application of school-based approaches has several advantages where the structure of health-care systems is not
