[The faces of migrant health in France].

The pathologies encountered by migrants are varied and depend on many factors such as sex, age, country of origin, migration conditions, administrative status, living conditions in France and the year of arrival. There are imported diseases such as tuberculosis or chronic hepatitis B, congenital as sickle cell disease, consequent to the difficulties encountered during the migration course -psychological disorders and malnutrition in particular-, acquired on the French territory in connection with hardship like scabies or nearly one in two HIV infections, but also related to the adoption of del

PATHOGENESIS OF HEPATOCELLULAR CARCINOMA DEVELOPMENT IN NON ALCOHOLIC FATTY LIVER DISEASE.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is being recognized as an increasingly important contributor to the burden of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) worldwide. It is often accompanied by obesity and diabetes mellitus and is believed to be the hepatic representation of the metabolic syndrome. HCC development in NAFLD is multifactorial and complex. It is dependent on not only the well-described mechanisms noted in chronic liver injury, but also on the molecular derangements associated with obesity and dysmetabolism. These include adipocyte remodeling, adipokine secretion, lipotoxicity and insu

Visfatin levels in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

PURPOSE: Recently, role of adipokin in the pathogenesis of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been suggested. Among adipokins, role of leptin and adiponectin is rather well known; however, there are only a few data concerning visfatin. MATERIAL AND METHODS: NAFLD is confirmed in 30 patients by ultrasonography. As a control group, patients without fatty liver or other liver diseases were included. Viral hepatitis, metabolic liver diseases, and autoimmune hepatitis and consumption of alcohol were excluded in all patients. Fasting serum level of visfatin was determined by ELISA method.

Alfuzosin-induced acute liver injury.

We describe a 56-year-old man who developed an acute liver injury after taking alfuzosin for 1 month to control his newly diagnosed benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). There was no history of alcohol consumption or the taking herbal or traditional remedies. Viral causes, autoimmune hepatitis, and biliary tree obstruction were excluded. Other rare causes of hepatitis such as hemochromatosis, primary biliary cirrhosis and Wilson's disease were also absent in this patient. His liver test results began to improve after discontinuing the alfuzosin. Two weeks later, alfuzosin was administered again

Genetic polymorphisms and the progression of liver fibrosis: a critical appraisal.

Liver fibrosis is a highly dynamic process in which multiple genes interact with environmental factors. Recent human epidemiologic studies have identified possible polymorphisms in a number of candidate genes that influence the progression of liver fibrosis. These genetic factors could explain the broad spectrum of responses to the same etiologic agent found in patients with chronic liver diseases. Polymorphisms in genes encoding immunoregulatory proteins, proinflammatory cytokines, and fibrogenic factors may influence disease progression in patients with alcohol-induced liver disease, primary

Liver transplantation.

From more than 900 articles in the medical literature, published between August 1, 1991 and July 31, 1992, 46 were selected for review. During the year of review, major international symposiums were held on a new drug, FK506, and intestinal transplantation. In addition, at least one new attempt at a unifying hypothesis regarding graft adaptation was proposed. Other studies included living related donor transplantation, results with transplantation for alcoholics, and the controversy regarding the role of liver transplantation for the treatment of Budd-Chiari syndrome. Concerns regarding the re

Plasma lipoprotein pattern in relation to liver histology after toxic hepatitis and experimental biliary obstruction in rabbits.

Plasma lipoproteins were studied in relation to liver histology in rabbits in the course of toxic hepatitis and compared to those after experimental biliary obstruction. The lipoprotein electrophoretic pattern became deeply abnormal during the acute phase of toxic hepatitis and correlated with the degree of liver injury, improving during recovery. Liver damage was more severe after carbon tetrachloride than after alcohol and milder after allylo-isopropyl-acetamide, a porphyrinogenic substance. Lipoprotein abnormalities were not followed by significantly reduced levels of cholesterol esters in

Glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid hormones in chronic liver diseases.

In patients with chronic liver disease a dissociation of the two most important partial functions of the adrenal cortex may be observed. A widening of the zona glomerulosa is associated with an increased aldosterone secretion and an atrophy of the zona fasciculata with a decreased cortisol production rate. In acute alcoholic liver damage there are sometimes remarkable special features concerning the adrenal function. The pathogenesis of the altered C21-steroid hormone metabolism is nonuniform and depends upon the etiology of the liver disease. Following factors may play role: 1. Decreased acti

Vanadium(IV)-chlorodipicolinate alleviates hepatic steatosis via the AMPK/PGC-1α/CPT1a axis.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is closely associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus, which is characterized by hepatic steatosis. Vanadium compounds have the potential to prevent hyperlipidemia. However, whether vanadium compound supplementation could rescue hepatic steatosis in NAFLD remains uncertain. We sought to investigate the molecular mechanisms by which vanadium(IV)-chlorodipicolinate (VOdipic-Cl) ameliorated hepatic steatosis in obesity. The therapeutic effect of VOdipic-Cl was evaluated using high-fat diet (HFD)-induced C57BL/6 mice and palmitic acid/oleic acid (PO)-treated

Stevia rebaudiana root polysaccharide modulates liver metabolism, bile acid, and gut microbiota improving HFD-induced NAFLD: Potential roles of ACSL1 and FADS2.

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a prevalent metabolic disorder characterized by liver lipid accumulation and insulin resistance. However, effective therapeutic drugs for NAFLD are currently unavailable. Stevia rebaudiana root polysaccharides (SRRP) are inulin-type polysaccharides known for their hypoglycemic properties. Despite this, the effects of SRRP on improving NAFLD and the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. PURPOSE: This study aims to evaluate the potential of SRRP in alleviating NAFLD and to explore its mechanisms of action. METHODS: NAFLD was in

Noninvasive Diagnosis of Hepatic Steatosis Using Fat Attenuation Parameter Measured by FibroTouch and a New Algorithm in CHB Patients.

BACKGROUND: Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) remains a major public health problem worldwide, and the prevalence of CHB patients with hepatic steatosis is gradually increasing. Noninvasive approaches for the assessment of hepatic steatosis have been developed as alternatives to liver biopsy. OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the diagnostic performance of the fat attenuation parameter (FAP) measured by transient elastography (FibroTouch) and a new algorithm to assess hepatic steatosis in CHB patients, in comparison to liver biopsy as the gold standard. METHODS: Two hundred fifty-four CHB patients und

[Research progress on the impact of metabolic associated fatty liver disease on viral activity, treatment response, and prognosis in patients with chronic hepatitis B: current status and prospects].

Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) can gradually progress to life-threatening diseases such as cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In recent years, with the change in people's lifestyles, the incidence rate of metabolic associated fatty liver disease has been steadily increasing and the patients combined with CHB and MAFLD has significantly surged. However, the impact of MAFLD on patients with CHB in aspects of antiviral response, clinical outcomes, and others is still controversial. This article reviews research progress on the impact of MAFLD with regard to natural course and antiviral trea

Changing trends in liver transplantation indications in Saudi Arabia: from hepatitis C virus infection to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

BACKGROUND: Several trend analyses on liver transplantation (LT) indications have been published in the U.S. and in other countries, but there are limited data on LT indication trends in Saudi Arabia (SA), especially since the availability of direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) treatment for hepatitis C virus (HCV). This study aimed to analyze trends in the frequency of LT indications among LT recipients in SA over a 19-year period and examine associations between etiologic-specific trends and clinicodemographic characteristics. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed clinical and surgical dat

HBV Upregulates CtBP2 Expression via the X Gene.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection causes acute and chronic liver diseases that can eventually develop into cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but the carcinogenesis of HBV is not fully understood. Carboxyl-terminal-binding protein 2 (CtBP2) plays an important role in tumorigenesis and progression. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of HBV on CtBP2 expression and to explore its mechanism. METHODS: Real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and western blotting were used to evaluate the CtBP2 mRNA and protein expressi

Outcomes for hepatorenal syndrome and acute kidney injury in patients undergoing liver transplantation: a single-center experience.

Acute kidney injury occurs commonly among patients with advanced liver disease. These patients may undergo liver transplantation with subsequent improvement in hepatic function. However, the renal outcomes of these patients after liver transplantation has only occasionally been reported. Knowledge of these outcomes would be useful to identify patients who may benefit from combined liver-renal transplantation. We retrospectively analyzed 29 patients who subsequently went on to have a liver transplantation. Seventeen of cases could be ascribed to hepatorenal syndrome (HRS) and 12 cases to ATN. F

GRP78/BiP alleviates oxLDL-induced hepatotoxicity in familial hypercholesterolemia caused by missense variants of LDLR in a HepG2 cellular model.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The accumulation of misfolded proteins, encoded by genetic variants of functional genes leads to Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) stress, which is a critical consequence in human disorders such as familial hypercholesterolemia, cardiovascular and hepatic diseases. In addition to the identification of ER stress as a contributing factor to pathogenicity, extensive studies on the role of oxidized Low-Density Lipoprotein (oxLDL) and its ill effects in expediting cardiovascular diseases and other metabolic comorbidities are well documented. However, the current understanding of its r

The rationale and study design of two phase II trials examining the effects of BI 685,509, a soluble guanylyl cyclase activator, on clinically significant portal hypertension in patients with compensated cirrhosis.

BACKGROUND: Clinically significant portal hypertension (CSPH) drives cirrhosis-related complications (i.e. hepatic decompensation). Impaired nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability promotes sinusoidal vasoconstriction, which is the initial pathomechanism of CSPH development. Activation of soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC), a key downstream effector of NO, facilitates sinusoidal vasodilation, which in turn may improve CSPH. Two phase II studies are being conducted to assess the efficacy of the NO-independent sGC activator BI 685,509 in patients with CSPH due to various cirrhosis aetiologies. METHODS: T
