ZnO, AgCl and AgCl/ZnO nanocomposites incorporated chitosan in the form of hydrogel beads for photocatalytic degradation of MB, E. coli and S. aureus.

Significant improvement of effective and low-cost decolorization and disinfecting technologies is required to address the problems created by dyes and dangerous microorganisms from water and wastewaters. This article expresses the degradation of methylene blue (MB), Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) as gram negative and positive bacteria via a chitosan/AgCl/ZnO (CS/AgCl/ZnO) nanocomposite hydrogel beads system as a photocatalyst under visible light irradiation. The techniques such as FT-IR, SEM, EDAX, TGA, and XRD were applied to recognize the synthesized beads.

Two types of polyelectrolyte multilayers hydrogel membrane based on chitosan and alginate with different self-assembled process for control L929 cell behavior.

Controlling the adhesion of mammalian cells at the interface between materials and biological environments is a real challenge when designing materials for tissue engineering applications. The surface properties of implanted materials are known to have a significant impact on cell adhesion. Herein, two types of polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) hydrogel membrane based on marine-derived polysaccharides of chitosan (CHI) and alginate (ALG) biopolymers were fabricated by the layer-by-layer (LbL) technique using simple approach involving the change in assemble sequence of chitosan with different

Growth factor-mediated augmentation of long bones: evaluation of a BMP-7 loaded thermoresponsive hydrogel in a murine femoral intramedullary injection model.

BACKGROUND: Due to our aging population, an increase in proximal femur fractures can be expected, which is associated with impaired activities of daily living and a high risk of mortality. These patients are also at a high risk to suffer a secondary osteoporosis-related fracture on the contralateral hip. In this context, growth factors could open the field for regenerative approaches, as it is known that, i.e., the growth factor BMP-7 (bone morphogenetic protein 7) is a potent stimulator of osteogenesis. Local prophylactic augmentation of the proximal femur with a BMP-7 loaded thermoresponsive

Cartilage regeneration using arthroscopic flushing fluid-derived mesenchymal stem cells encapsulated in a one-step rapid cross-linked hydrogel.

UNLABELLED: Many attempts have been made to repair articular cartilage defects, including mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-based tissue engineering strategies. Although this approach shows promise, optimizing MSC sources and their delivery is challenging. This study was designed to test the feasibility of using MSCs found in the human arthroscopic flushing fluid (AFF) for cartilage regeneration, by incorporating them into a newly developed one-step rapid cross-linking hyper-branched polyPEGDA/HA hydrogel. AFF-MSCs were isolated from the original intra-articular flushing fluid of 10 patients prior t

One-step delivery of a functional multi-layered cell sheet using a thermally expandable hydrogel with controlled presentation of cell adhesive proteins.

In this study, we developed a new system enabling rapid delivery of a multi-layered cell sheet by combining layer-by-layer (LBL) coating of a cell membrane and surface engineered thermally expandable hydrogel. Human dermal fibroblasts were LBL-coated with fibronectin (FN) and gelatin to form a multi-layered cell sheet in a single seeding step via spontaneous 3D cell-cell interactions. FN was covalently immobilized onto the surface of a Tetronic®-based hydrogel at two different concentrations (1 and 5 μg ml-1) for stable adhesion of the multi-layered cell sheet, followed by polydopamine coating

A PEGylated platelet free plasma hydrogel based composite scaffold enables stable vascularization and targeted cell delivery for volumetric muscle loss.

UNLABELLED: Extracellular matrix (ECM) scaffolds are being used for the clinical repair of soft tissue injuries. Although improved functional outcomes have been reported, ECM scaffolds show limited tissue specific remodeling response with concomitant deposition of fibrotic tissue. One plausible explanation is the regression of blood vessels which may be limiting the diffusion of oxygen and nutrients across the scaffold. Herein we develop a composite scaffold as a vasculo-inductive platform by integrating PEGylated platelet free plasma (PFP) hydrogel with a muscle derived ECM scaffold (m-ECM).

A π-π conjugation-containing soft and conductive injectable polymer hydrogel highly efficiently rebuilds cardiac function after myocardial infarction.

Previous studies suggested that a stiffer hydrogel system exhibited a better performance to promote heart function after myocardial infarction (MI). However, the nature of myocardium, a tissue that alternately contracts and relaxes with electrical impulses, leads us to hypothesize that a soft and conductive hydrogel may be in favor of mechanical and electrical signals transmission to enhance heart function after MI. In this work, π-π conjugation interaction was first employed to produce a soft injectable hydrogel with conductive property. Melamine with π-π conjugation ring was used as a core t

The comparison of the effects of a novel hydrogel compound and traditional hyaluronate following micro-fracture procedure in a rat full-thickness chondral defect model.

PURPOSE: The aim of this experimental study was to investigate the impact of HA-CS-NAG compound (hyaluronate, sodium chondroitin sulfate, N-acetyl-d-glucosamine) on the quality of repair tissue after micro-fracture and to compare it with HA (hyaluronat), in a rat full-thickness chondral defect model. METHODS: Full-thickness chondral defects were created in a non-weight bearing area by using a handle 2.7-mm drill bit, in the right knees of 33 Sprague-Dawley rats. Each specimen then underwent micro-fracture using a needle. Two weeks after surgery, 3 groups were randomly formed among the rats (n

Systematic optimization of an engineered hydrogel allows for selective control of human neural stem cell survival and differentiation after transplantation in the stroke brain.

Stem cell therapies have shown promise in promoting recovery in stroke but have been limited by poor cell survival and differentiation. We have developed a hyaluronic acid (HA)-based self-polymerizing hydrogel that serves as a platform for adhesion of structural motifs and a depot release for growth factors to promote transplant stem cell survival and differentiation. We took an iterative approach in optimizing the complex combination of mechanical, biochemical and biological properties of an HA cell scaffold. First, we optimized stiffness for a minimal reaction of adjacent brain to the transp

Decision analysis model evaluating the cost of a temporary hydrogel rectal spacer before prostate radiation therapy to reduce the incidence of rectal complications.

PURPOSE: We conducted a decision analysis to evaluate the cost effectiveness of a newly Food and Drug Administration approved rectal spacer gel (SpaceOAR, Augmenix) for the reduction of rectal toxicity of prostate radiation therapy (RT). METHODS: A decision tree model (TreeAge Pro) was used to compare the strategy of pretherapy placement of a spacing hydrogel before RT to RT alone. The model compared costs associated with rectal complications because of rectal toxicity over a 10-year period across 3 different RT modalities. Rectal toxicity rates were estimated from studies on conformal RT dos

Durability, safety and efficacy of polyacrylamide hydrogel (Bulkamid(®)) in the management of stress and mixed urinary incontinence: three year follow up outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: There are a myriad of treatment options available for patients suffering with the increasingly prevalent condition of stress urinary incontinence (SUI). The minimally invasive nature of periurethral bulking agents makes them an attractive proposition in the correctly selected patient. There is, however, limited data available on the medium to long term safety and efficacy of this procedure. The aim of our study is to evaluate the outcomes of Polyacrylamide Hydrogel (PAHG) (Bulkamid(®)) as a periurethral bulking agent at our institution. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From 2006 to 2011, t

Comparison of Osteoconductive Ability of Two Types of Cholesterol-Bearing Pullulan (CHP) Nanogel-Hydrogels Impregnated with BMP-2 and RANKL-Binding Peptide: Bone Histomorphometric Study in a Murine Calvarial Defect Model.

The receptor activator of NF-κB ligand (RANKL)-binding peptide is known to accelerate bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-2-induced bone formation. Cholesterol-bearing pullulan (CHP)-OA nanogel-crosslinked PEG gel (CHP-OA nanogel-hydrogel) was shown to release the RANKL-binding peptide sustainably; however, an appropriate scaffold for peptide-accelerated bone formation is not determined yet. This study compares the osteoconductivity of CHP-OA hydrogel and another CHP nanogel, CHP-A nanogel-crosslinked PEG gel (CHP-A nanogel-hydrogel), in the bone formation induced by BMP-2 and the peptide. Relaxation times of spin states of all ranks and orders of quadrupolar nuclei estimated from NMR z-spectra: Markov chain Monte Carlo analysis applied to 7Li+ and 23Na+ in stretched hydrogels.

The NMR z-spectra of 7Li+ and 23Na+ in stretched hydrogels contain five minima, or critical values, with a sharp "dagger" on the central dip. The mathematical representation of such z-spectra from spin-3/2 nuclei contains nine distinct (the total is 15 but there is redundancy of the ±order-numbers) relaxation rate constants that are unique for each of the spin states, up to rank 3, order 3. We present an approach to multiple-parameter-value estimation that exploits the high level of separability of the effects of each of the relaxation rate constants on the features of the z-spectrum.
