Risk factor-based models to predict severe retinopathy of prematurity in preterm Thai infants.

PURPOSE: To develop prediction models for severe retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) based on risk factors in preterm Thai infants to reduce unnecessary eye examinations in low-risk infants. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included preterm infants screened for ROP in a tertiary hospital in Bangkok, Thailand, between September 2009 and December 2020. A predictive score model and a risk factor-based algorithm were developed based on the risk factors identified by a multivariate logistic regression analysis. Validity scores, and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs), were reported.

Long-term effects of caffeine therapy for apnea of prematurity.

BACKGROUND: Methylxanthine therapy is commonly used for apnea of prematurity but in the absence of adequate data on its efficacy and safety. It is uncertain whether methylxanthines have long-term effects on neurodevelopment and growth. METHODS: We randomly assigned 2006 infants with birth weights of 500 to 1250 g to receive either caffeine or placebo until therapy for apnea of prematurity was no longer needed. The primary outcome was a composite of death, cerebral palsy, cognitive delay (defined as a Mental Development Index score of <85 on the Bayley Scales of Infant Development), deafness,

Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms in Vitamin D Receptor Gene Affect Birth Weight and the Risk of Preterm Birth: Results From the "Mamma & Bambino" Cohort and A Meta-Analysis.

The effect of vitamin D receptor gene (VDR) polymorphisms on adverse pregnancy outcomes-including preterm birth (PTB), low birth weight and small for gestational age-is currently under debate. We investigated 187 mother-child pairs from the Italian "Mamma & Bambino" cohort to evaluate the association of maternal VDR polymorphisms-BsmI, ApaI, FokI and TaqI-with neonatal anthropometric measures and the risk of PTB. To corroborate our results, we conducted a meta-analysis of observational studies. For the FokI polymorphism, we showed that gestational duration and birth weight decreased with i

Asthma, Gestational Diabetes, and Adverse Perinatal Outcomes: A Population-Based Obstetrics Records Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Asthma and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are prevalent in pregnancy, with asthma previously associated with an increased GDM risk. Each independently increases the risk of adverse perinatal outcomes, but the effect of dual exposure is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To compare clinical, demographic, and perinatal outcome data between women with and without asthma, who do and do not develop GDM. METHODS: Data for singleton births to mothers aged 18 years or older were extracted from electronic records across 2 Australian Health Districts (2018-2020). The effects of asthma and/or GDM on

A longitudinal study of pre-pregnancy antioxidant levels and subsequent perinatal outcomes in black and white women: The CARDIA Study.

BACKGROUND: Although protective associations between dietary antioxidants and pregnancy outcomes have been reported, randomized controlled trials of supplementation have been almost uniformly negative. A possible explanation is that supplementation during pregnancy may be too late to have a beneficial effect. Therefore, we examined the relationship between antioxidant levels prior to pregnancy and birth outcomes. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Serum carotenoids and tocopherols were assayed in fasting specimens at 1985-86 (baseline) and 1992-1993 (year 7) from 1,215 participants in Coronary Artery Risk

Impact of maternal antepartum depressive and anxiety symptoms on birth outcomes and mode of delivery: a prospective cohort study in east and west coasts of Malaysia.

BACKGROUND: Antepartum depressive and anxiety symptoms (ADS and AAS) are prevalent in Malaysia. Prior evidence linking maternal ADS and AAS with adverse birth outcomes and caesarean section (CS) or instrumental delivery is conflicting. There is no research in Malaysia on the association between maternal mental disorders and adverse birth outcomes and mode of delivery. This study aims to investigate the independent effect of maternal ADS and AAS on low birth weight (LBW), preterm birth (PTB) and CS or instrumental delivery among women in east and west coasts of Malaysia. METHODS: We used data

Ambient Air Pollution and Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes in Wuhan, China.

BACKGROUND: Several recent studies have suggested that maternal exposures to air pollution and temperature extremes might contribute to low birth weight (LBW), preterm birth (PTB), and other outcomes that can adversely affect infant health. At the time the current study began, most other studies had been conducted in the United States or Europe. Dr. Zhengmin Qian proposed to extend work he had done on ambient particulate air pollution and daily mortality in Wuhan, China (Qian et al. 2010), as part of the HEIsponsored Public Health and Air Pollution in Asia program, to study adverse birth outco

Preterm birth and fetal growth restriction in HIV-infected Brazilian pregnant women.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal HIV infection and related co-morbidities may have two outstanding consequences to fetal health: mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) and adverse perinatal outcomes. After Brazilian success in reducing MTCT, the attention must now be diverted to the potentially increased risk for preterm birth (PTB) and intrauterine fetal growth restriction (IUGR). OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of PTB and IUGR in low income, antiretroviral users, publicly assisted, HIV-infected women and to verify its relation to the HIV infection stage. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Out of 250 deliveri

Residential proximity to major roads and adverse birth outcomes: a hospital-based study.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to air pollution has been demonstrated to increase the risk of preterm birth and low birth weight (LBW). Although evidence has accumulated on characteristics associated with increased risk of air pollution-related health effects, most studies have been conducted in the adult population and evidence on reproductive outcomes is limited. We examined whether socio-economic position (SEP) and parental characteristics (parental behavior and co-morbidity) modified the relationship between air pollution and adverse birth outcomes. METHODS: Data were extracted from a perinatal hos
