Health systems resilience and private for-profit sector engagement: lessons from the second COVID-19 wave in Uttar Pradesh, India.

India's second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in April-June 2021 involved an explosion of case numbers, with devastating consequences for the country's already strained health systems. This case study examines the private health market response to the pandemic in Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state. We analyzed 203 news articles to understand both the experiences of private providers and patients in response to government policies being implemented in the state. This analysis informed our interviews with 20 state-level officials, district-level key informants, and formal and informal pri

A Semantic-Enhanced Multi-Source Fusion Localization Method for GNSS-Degraded Environments.

In complex urban environments, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals are easily affected by building blockage and multipath effects, which may degrade positioning quality or even cause GNSS denial. As a result, conventional integrated navigation systems suffer from accumulated errors due to insufficient global constraints. To address this problem, a multi-source integrated positioning method incorporating semantic information is proposed. Fixed traffic lights are selected as semantic landmarks, and an object detection network is used to extract the center pixel coordinates and dete

"It's not easy, but we need to support them so they don't get tired on the way": provider perspectives on delivering HIV services for people returning to HIV care in Cape Town, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: People living with HIV who interrupt treatment often face challenges when re-engaging in care and remain at risk for future interruptions. Understanding the provider perspective on the healthcare context in which re-engagement occurs is essential for designing effective and scalable support interventions. We aimed to characterize the implementation context for re-engaging in HIV care in Cape Town, South Africa, with a view to inform the design of future interventions in this setting. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews with nurses (n = 5), counsellors (n = 3)

Perspectives of primary care nurses on the organization of the COVID-19 vaccine rollout: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Primary care nurses, including nurse practitioners (NPs), registered nurses (RNs), and licensed practical nurses/registered practical nurses (LPNs/RPNs), play a pivotal role in pandemic management and outbreak planning. There is extensive literature surrounding COVID-19 vaccination efforts in Canada; however, limited research addresses the involvement of primary care nurses, as well as the organization and integration of these efforts into primary care settings. This study aimed to describe the organizational challenges, barriers, and facilitators to primary care nurses' roles in C

A multi-level meta-analysis of the relationship between decision-making during birth and postpartum mental health.

INTRODUCTION: There is accumulating evidence of ineffective decision-making between birthing individuals and healthcare providers during childbirth. While research syntheses have demonstrated that negative birth experiences are associated with postpartum mental health, primary quantitative studies linking specific decision-making measures and mental health outcomes have not been synthesised. The present study aims to fill this gap in order to provide hands-on evidence on how to further improve perinatal care. METHODS: A systematic literature search using Bolean logic was conducted. The determinants of health and health status of individuals in police custody in Australia: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: In Australia, the health of people in police custody facilities and the conditions of their detention have been the focus of repeated scrutiny and investigations since the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody was published in 1991. However, there remains a lack of comprehensive, consolidated evidence on the health needs of this population. To address this gap, we conducted a scoping review to identify and describe the available information on their health status and determinants of health. METHODS: We followed the JBI methodology for scoping reviews, including search

Barriers and facilitators influencing parental adherence to prevention strategies for deformational plagiocephaly: Results from a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Deformational plagiocephaly can be prevented in many healthy infants if strategies are implemented early after birth. However, despite efforts to disseminate accurate information, parental adherence to evidence-based prevention strategies is a challenge. To date, factors - barriers and facilitators - influencing parental adherence to strategies have yet to be identified in a comprehensive manner. OBJECTIVES: This scoping review aims to identify and synthesize current evidence on barriers and facilitators impacting adherence of parents of newborns to deformational plagiocephaly pre

An evaluation of clinical risk factors for estimating fracture risk in postmenopausal osteoporosis using an electronic medical record database.

SUMMARY: Many of the clinical risk factors used in fracture risk assessment (FRAX) calculator are available in electronic medical record (EMR) databases and are good sources of osteoporosis risk factor information. The EPIC EMR database showed a lower prevalence of FRAX risk factors and, consequently, proportion of patients who would be deemed "high risk." INTRODUCTION: The FRAX tool is underutilized for osteoporosis screening. Many of the clinical risk factors for FRAX may be available in EMR databases and may enable health systems to perform fracture risk assessments. We intended to identif

Monitoring the aquatic toxicity of mosquito vector control spray pesticides to freshwater receiving waters.

Pesticides are applied to state and local waterways in California to control insects such as mosquitoes, which are known to serve as a vector for West Nile Virus infection of humans. The California State Water Resources Control Board adopted a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System General Permit to address the discharge to waters of the United States of pesticides resulting from adult and larval mosquito control. Because pesticides used in spray activities have the potential to cause toxicity to nontarget organisms in receiving waters, the current study was designed to determine whet

Survey of dairy housing and manure management practices in California.

In 2007, a descriptive survey was mailed to all dairies in Glenn (G) and Tulare (T) Counties to identify current and future opportunities of manure management practices on California dairies. The purpose was to provide baseline information for development of outreach curriculum and a decision support tool to quantify potential benefits of various N management options on dairy farms. Such baseline information is valuable to staff regulating dairy facilities (e.g., San Joaquin Valley Unified Air Pollution Control District and Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board), dairy trade asso

What the study of voice recognition in normal subjects and brain-damaged patients tells us about models of familiar people recognition.

In recent years it has been shown that a disorder in recognizing familiar people can be observed in patients with lesions affecting the anterior parts of the temporal lobes and that these disorders can be multi-modal, simultaneously affecting the visual, auditory and linguistic channels that allow person identification. Several authors have also shown that patients with right anterior temporal atrophy are more impaired in assessing familiarity and in retrieving person-specific semantic information from faces than from names, whereas the opposite pattern of performance can be observed in patien

State space navigation using geometrically symmetric inflatables.

Soft robots rely on continuous control to achieve complex functionality. Their autonomous behavior is currently limited by a lack of embodied computation and the ability to store information of past events. Inflatable soft actuators typically relax once pressure is removed and, thus, do not exhibit state-space behavior when combined. As a result, rather than embodying memory and logic, inflatable soft robots implement these functions in software. Prior work has shown that mechanical instabilities can endow soft structures with discrete states, yet accessing all possible combinations of states

The association of self-perceptions of aging, cognitive reserve, and depression among older adults: A network analysis approach.

AIM: Evidence shows that self-perceptions of aging and cognitive reserve are respectively risk and protective factors for depression. However, prior research has largely relied on traditional regression analyses without adopting a systems perspective. Network analysis can reveal complex association patterns in depression-related systems. This study aimed to identify core and bridge nodes in a depression-related network model and examine the importance of self-perceptions of aging. METHODS: A survey was conducted with 1019 participants from March to October 2023. Network analysis was conducted

Health and safety management actions to reduce the impact that medication can have on occupational risks in SMEs.

INTRODUCTION: Occupational risks and accidents are a global concern, so this analysis has been undertaken by a multitude of researchers. However, there is a limited body of research specifically addressing the influence of medication on occupational risks and, more notably, the development of measures aimed at controlling or reducing the impact that such medication may have on workplace safety and health. This scientific gap is even greater among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). METHODS: The general objective of the research presented here is to identify and explore possible health

Orbital magnetism and spin-selective nodal-surface topology in halogen-deficient Pd/Pt square quantum dots.

Magnetic amplification and anisotropy control in atomically thin systems are largely governed by the interplay of structural symmetry breaking and electronic reorganization under reduced dimensionality. In this work, we study a novel coordination-modified square nanodot architecture, TM9X12, derived from its TM9X16 counterpart using density functional theory. It is observed that, when Pd- and Pt-based halides are considered as single-atom-thick, zero-dimensional configuration, halogen-deficient systems consistently exhibit z-axis dominated g-shifts, that increase by ∼3.1-5.1 times in bromide-c
