Understanding the uptake of a clinical innovation for osteoarthritis in primary care: a qualitative study of knowledge mobilisation using the i-PARIHS framework.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis is a leading cause of pain and disability worldwide. Despite research supporting best practice, evidence-based guidelines are often not followed. Little is known about the implementation of non-surgical models of care in routine primary care practice. From a knowledge mobilisation perspective, the aim of this study was to understand the uptake of a clinical innovation for osteoarthritis and explore the journey from a clinical trial to implementation. METHODS: This study used two methods: secondary analysis of focus groups undertaken with general practice staff from

The feasibility and acceptability of the provision of alcohol screening and brief advice in pharmacies for women accessing emergency contraception: an evaluation study.

BACKGROUND: It is widely accepted that excessive drinking contributes to both health and social problems. There has been considerable interest in the potential of community pharmacies as a setting for health advice, and evidence suggests that interventions by pharmacists can be effective. Research on interventions relating to alcohol consumption in primary care has focused on general practice, and although some evidence exists about the efficacy of pharmacy interventions, little research to date has taken place in the UK. The aim of this study was to evaluate the acceptability of alcohol scree

Shoe leather epidemiology: active travel and transport infrastructure in the urban landscape.

BACKGROUND: Building new transport infrastructure could help to promote changes in patterns of mobility, physical activity, and other determinants of population health such as economic development. However, local residents may not share planners' goals or assumptions about the benefits of such interventions. A particularly contentious example is the construction of major roads close to deprived residential areas. We report the qualitative findings of the baseline phase of a longitudinal mixed-method study of a new urban section of the M74 motorway in Glasgow, Scotland, that aims to combine qua

Validation of the behavioural and social drivers of influenza vaccine survey in Australia: Cognitive interviews and psychometric evaluation.

Seasonal influenza vaccination reduces the risk of contracting influenza. In Australia, vaccination coverage is consistently low among the most at-risk groups eligible for the free influenza vaccine. To establish an annual national monitoring of the behavioral and social drivers of influenza vaccination, we validated the World Health Organization's Behavioral and Social Drivers of Influenza Vaccination survey. Ours is the first study reporting the validation results of the newly developed survey tool. Two validation stages occurred: first, cognitive interviews and survey item revisions based o

Experiences of Informal Caregivers Facing Cancer While Caring for Someone With Dementia: Qualitative Interview Study.

BACKGROUND: Informal caregivers play a fundamental role in the diagnosis, treatment, and care received by their family members. Caring for someone with dementia is particularly burdensome and can have negative effects on caregivers' health. Despite caregivers being widely recognized as vulnerable, the psychosocial needs of caregivers who are managing cancer themselves remain unknown. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the experiences of UK family caregivers who have received a cancer diagnosis while caring for someone with dementia or memory problems. METHODS: Twenty-five UK informal

Factors influencing pre-hospital decision-making among stroke survivors in the rural area of South Africa: an exploratory study.

INTRODUCTION: Stroke remains a leading cause of mortality and disability globally, with a disproportionate burden in low-and middle-income countries. While early intervention is the clinical gold standard, pre-hospital delays remain a significant barrier to effective treatment in rural South African contexts. This qualitative study explored the socio-cultural, cognitive, and structural factors influencing stroke survivors' decision-making pathways in rural South Africa. METHODS: An exploratory qualitative design was employed. Ten stroke survivors were recruited from rural Limpopo Province usi

The Work of Well-Being: How People Work to Support Their Well-Being After Stroke.

INTRODUCTION: Stroke can have a range of impacts on a person's life. Previous research has highlighted the need for greater attention to well-being, with people with stroke reporting that well-being is not well addressed in stroke services and therefore remains an area of unmet need. While previous research has considered how services address well-being, this study focused on those with stroke, exploring the work they did to maintain and enhance their well-being while receiving care from stroke services. It also examined how stroke services appeared to influence this work. MATERIALS AND METHO

Implications for Care Relationships in Technology-Supported Stroke Rehabilitation: A Qualitative Interview Study.

This study explores how technology-supported rehabilitation reshapes the relationships between patients and therapists. Additionally, it examines how empirical findings can inform early design decisions. Qualitative interviews with patients and therapists identified their perceptions of PhysioMio, a wearable sensor-based rehabilitation device that detects muscle activity to monitor rehabilitation progress and enable independent home-based training. Adapting an ethics of care perspective, we focus on the significance of therapeutic relationships when discussing ethical nuances that emerge with

Bridging the perception-practice gap: a mixed-methods study on interprofessional collaboration for diabetes and periodontitis management.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes and periodontitis have a bidirectional association, yet interprofessional collaboration (IPC) for their management remains inconsistent in clinical practice. Notably, national and international guidelines often omit oral health assessment from routine diabetes management. This study aims to assess primary care professionals’ perceptions of this association and their related management practices, and to explore the underlying barriers to low bidirectional screening and referral rates. METHODS: A sequential explanatory mixed methods design was used. Community medical practit

Disclosure, social support, and meaning-based coping among Omani mothers living with breast cancer: a phenomenological qualitative study.

PURPOSE: Mothers diagnosed with breast cancer in collectivist, faith-oriented societies face dilemmas regarding the timing, manner, and extent of disclosure of their illness to their children and extended family members. However, evidence addressing this issue within Arab contexts remains limited. This phenomenological qualitative study explored how Omani mothers with breast cancer navigate disclosure, interpret familial and communal responses, and employ coping strategies within sociocultural and religious frameworks. METHODS: In-depth semistructured interviews were conducted in Arabic with

Building and Boosting Capitals for Health Care Access: A Qualitative Study of Homeless Health Peer Advocacy in London, UK.

Peer support is widely promoted as enabling health care access with people experiencing homelessness, including through enabling independence, empowering individuals and managing stigma. However, there is little understanding of these processes, including how they relate to the wide range of potential activities involved in peer support. We studied peer support within a peer advocacy service at a charity run by and for people experiencing homelessness in London, UK. We report analysis from a sub-set of qualitative interviews and focus groups gathered for a qualitative study of peer advocacy. W
