Postoperation of cervical cancer with intestine metastasis: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer can infiltrate locally and directly spread to adjacent organs including the vagina, peritoneum, urinary bladder, ureters, rectum, and paracervical tissue, but the intestine metastasis from cervical cancer is extremely rare, which can easily be misdiagnosed. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report a case about a 45-year-old postoperative cervical cancer patient with metastases to small intestine and sigmoid colon who presented abdominal distention and dull pain due to intestinal obstruction. The patient underwent exploratory laparotomy, and two intestinal segments includ

Inhibiting Cholesterol Absorption During Lactation Programs Future Intestinal Absorption of Cholesterol in Adult Mice.

In nematodes, the intestine senses and integrates early life dietary cues that lead to lifelong epigenetic adaptations to a perceived nutritional environment-it is not clear whether this process occurs in mammals. We aimed to establish a mouse model of reduced dietary cholesterol availability from maternal milk and investigate the consequences of decreased milk cholesterol availability, early in life, on the metabolism of cholesterol in adult mice. We blocked intestinal absorption of cholesterol in milk fed to newborn mice by supplementing the food of dams (for 3 weeks between birth and weanin

Enteric neuron imbalance and proximal dysmotility in ganglionated intestine of the Sox10Dom/+ Hirschsprung mouse model.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: In Hirschsprung disease (HSCR), neural crest-derived progenitors (NCPs) fail to completely colonize the intestine so that the enteric nervous system (ENS) is absent from distal bowel. Despite removal of the aganglionic region, many HSCR patients suffer from residual intestinal dysmotility. To test the hypothesis that inappropriate lineage segregation of NCPs in proximal ganglionated regions of the bowel could contribute to such postoperative disease, we investigated neural crest (NC)-derived lineages and motility in ganglionated, postnatal intestine of the Sox10Dom/+ HSCR mo

Congenital mesenteric defects and unexpected death-a rare finding at autopsy.

Gastrointestinal causes of sudden and/or unexpected death in the young are uncommon and only rarely involve congenital anomalies of the mesentery. Two cases are reported of unexpected deaths following herniation of intestine through congenital mesenteric defects to illustrate the forensic issues that may arise. Case 1 involves a 2.5-year-old girl who collapsed on arrival to hospital following 18 hours of fever and apparently mildly nonspecific symptoms. Resuscitation was unsuccessful, and at autopsy a segment of gangrenous small intestine was found that had herniated through a congenital mesen

Enterostatin in gut endocrine cells--immunocytochemical evidence.

The presence of enterostatin, a pentapeptide acting as a potential satiety signal in rats, was investigated in rat intestine by immunocytochemical methods. Using antibodies directed against the C-terminal part of enterostatin, the peptide was identified in endocrine cells in the antral part of the stomach and in the small intestine of rat. The immunoreactive cells were more frequent in the antrum and duodenum and became gradually fewer towards the distal small intestine. In some of the labeled endocrine cells, a coexistence of enterostatin with serotonin was revealed by immunocytochemical doub

[Incidence of allergic reactions in small flocks of poultry and the pathogenesis of avian mycobacteriosis in domestic fowl].

Incidence of allergic reactions to avian tuberculin was investigated in 12,549 birds of the domestic fowl in the territory of one district, in 16 villages and in 721 small flocks. The reactions were found in 7.3% of birds and 35.5% flocks were infected. The zero reactions to tuberculin were observed only in one village out of the 16 villages investigated. Experimental infection confirmed high susceptibility of the domestic fowl to M. avium. After intramuscular implantation of M. avium suspension allergy to avian tuberculin was observed within a fortnight while within the same period histologic

Enterolithiasis associated with ileal perforation in Crohn's disease.

Calcified enteroliths are an uncommon sign of stasis of intestinal contents in the distal small intestine, usually caused by Meckel's diverticulum, Crohn's disease or other stenosing lesion. Although enteroliths are occasionally associated with intestinal obstruction the clinical picture in this case was dominated by perforation of the ileum by a small enterolith. The relevant literature is discussed.

Polymyositis as a cause of malabsorption. A case report.

We report on a patient with polymyositis which caused a malabsorption syndrome. The radiological findings included marked dilatation of the oesophagus and small intestine. The malabsorption syndrome appears to arise from bacterial overgrowth associated with intestinal stasis. The literature is reviewed. Polymyositis or dermatomyositis, like scleroderma, may involve the small bowel and cause the malabsorption syndrome.

[Adaptation mechanisms to the short intestine. Influence of the biliopancreatic factor: experimental study].

Massive small bowel resection that results in short bowel syndrome brings about regulatory mechanisms in the remaining intestine aimed at preventing the ensuing malabsorption. The purpose of the present study was to determine the role of pancreatic and biliary secretions in intestinal adaptation after small bowel resection. To do so, both pancreatic and biliary fluids were prevented from reaching the lumen of most of the small bowel. Four groups of animals were prepared: I) control group; II) eighty percent small bowel resection; III) duodenoileal by-pass; and IV) duodenoileal by-pass plus sma

Silicon-based agent alleviating intestinal ischemia/reperfusion injury in mice by inhibiting ferroptosis via activating AMPK-Sirt1 signaling pathway.

Ferroptosis is a death mode centered on iron metabolism and lipid peroxidation pathways. Recent studies have shown that inhibiting ferroptosis can alleviate intestinal ischemia/reperfusion (II/R) injury. Hydrogen (H2) can mitigate II/R injury by anti-oxidative stress, while Silicon (Si)-based agent can generate a large amount of H2 in the alkaline environment of the intestine during II/R. However, it is unclear whether Si-based agent can alleviate II/R injury. By establishing a mouse model of II/R injury, we examined the histopathological changes, apoptosis, inflammatory factors, oxidative str

Amino acid metabolism by pig intestinal bacteria and consequences for intestinal health and environment: current knowledge and future directions.

Amino acids available for bacteria within the small intestine of pigs are originating mainly from the dietary and endogenous proteins. These amino acids, in addition to those synthesized by the intestinal bacteria, are used in different metabolic pathways. The amino acids that cannot be synthesized by the intestinal bacteria can be considered as indispensable for them and must thus be obtained from the surrounding luminal fluid. In the pig large intestine, the amino acids used by bacteria originate presumably mainly from proteins not fully digested in the small intestine. In this narrative rev

Overexpression of the POZ-ZF protein Kaiso promotes intestinal tumorigenesis in murine models.

Over the past decade, several emerging roles for the transcription factor Kaiso in signaling and tumorigenesis have been unveiled. Intestinal-specific Kaiso overexpression induced chronic intestinal inflammation and potentiated intestinal tumorigenesis. This was consistent with the fact that Kaiso's binding partner, p120ctn, inhibits and modulates Kaiso's transcriptional activity and acts in an anti-inflammatory and anti-tumorigenic manner in murine intestinal models. However, the Kaiso-p120ctn relationship and mechanism of action in intestinal inflammation and tumorigenesis has yet to be full

Protective Effect of Piperine on Indomethacin-Induced Intestinal Damage.

Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely prescribed for the treatment of inflammation and chronic pain. Chronic use of NSAIDs is associated with adverse events and organ damage, especially to the gastric mucosa and small intestine. This study evaluates the protective effect of piperine on indomethacin-induced intestinal damage. Eighteen male Mus musculus mice, aged 6-8 weeks, were used. Intestinal damage was induced with indomethacin (10 mg/mL) and cotreatment with piperine (20 mg/mL), both administered orally. After 14 days, the animals were euthanized. Biochemical serological

Effect of pemafibrate in reducing intestinal long-chain fatty acid absorption and hepatic fibrosis in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis rats.

BACKGROUND: Pemafibrate helps regulate fatty acid dynamics in the liver, potentially preventing metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). However, its effect on intestinal long-chain fatty acid (LCFA) metabolism in MASH remains unclear. Thus, we aimed to examine the influence of pemafibrate on intestinal LCFA metabolism and hepatic fibrosis in a MASH rat model. METHODS: Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a high-fat and high-cholesterol diet to induce MASH and then divided into pemafibrate-treated (pemafibrate (+)) and untreated (pemafibrate (-)) groups. Triglyceride deposition in the

Polystyrene microplastics aggravate radiation-induced intestinal injury in mice.

Radiotherapy is a common treatment for abdominal and pelvic tumors, while the radiation-induced intestinal injury (RIII) is one of the major side-effects of radiotherapy, which reduces the life quality and impedes the treatment completion of cancer patients. Previous studies have demonstrated that environmental pollutant microplastics led to various kinds of injury in the gut, but its effects on RIII are still uncovered. In this study, we fed the C57BL/6J mice with distilled water or 50 μg/d polystyrene microplastics (PSMPs) for 17 days and exposed the mice to total abdominal irradiation (TAI)

Protective Effects of Alpha-Lipoic Acid against 5-Fluorouracil-Induced Gastrointestinal Mucositis in Rats.

Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is extensively utilized in multivitamin formulas and anti-aging products. The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential protective benefits of ALA on 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)-induced gastrointestinal mucositis in Wistar albino rats. Tissues from the stomach, small intestine, and large intestine were excised, and blood sera were obtained to identify biochemical indices such as TNF-α, IL-1β, MDA, GPx, SOD, MMP-1, -2, -8, and TIMP-1. A histopathological study was also performed. The results revealed mucositis-elevated TNF-, IL-1, MDA, MMP-1, -2, -8, and TIMP-1 le

Gut region induces gastrointestinal microbiota community shift in Ujimqin sheep (Ovis aries): from a multi-domain perspective.

Gastrointestinal (GI) microbiota is one of the most complicated microbial ecosystems and is vital in regulating biological processes associated with nutrient absorption and homeostatic maintenance. Although several efforts have been achieved in characterizing bacterial communities across gut regions, the variation of non-bacterial communities across GI tracts is still largely unexplored. To address this, we investigated microbial biogeography throughout the whole GI tracts of Ujimqin sheep (Ovis aries) by amplicon sequencing which targeted bacteria, fungi, and archaea. The results indicated th

Th17 Immunity in the Colon Is Controlled by Two Novel Subsets of Colon-Specific Mononuclear Phagocytes.

Intestinal immunity is coordinated by specialized mononuclear phagocyte populations, constituted by a diversity of cell subsets. Although the cell subsets constituting the mononuclear phagocyte network are thought to be similar in both small and large intestine, these organs have distinct anatomy, microbial composition, and immunological demands. Whether these distinctions demand organ-specific mononuclear phagocyte populations with dedicated organ-specific roles in immunity are unknown. Here we implement a new strategy to subset murine intestinal mononuclear phagocytes and identify two novel

The Availability of Iron Is Involved in the Murine Experimental Toxoplasma gondii Infection Outcome.

Iron is an important constituent of our environment, being necessary for both mammalian and pathogenic protozoa survival. Iron-containing proteins exert a wide range of biological processes such as biodegradation and biosynthesis, as well as immune function, fetal development, and physical and mental well-being. This work aimed to investigate the effect of iron deprivation in Toxoplasma gondii infection outcome. C57BL/6 mice were orally infected with T. gondii and treated with an iron chelator, deferoxamine, or supplemented with iron (ferrous sulfate), and the parasitism as well as immunologic

Understanding short bowel syndrome: Current status and future perspectives.

Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is a rare malabsorptive disorder as a result of the loss of bowel mass mostly secondary to surgical resection of the small intestine. Other causes are vascular diseases, neoplasms or inflammatory bowel disease. The spectrum of the disease is widely variable from single micronutrient malabsorption to complete intestinal failure, depending on the remaining length of the small intestine, the anatomical portion of intestine and the function of the remnant bowel. Over the last years, the management of affected patients has remarkably improved with the increase in patients
