Condylar injuries in growing patients.

Although the mandibular condyle is one of the most common sites of injury of the facial skeleton, it is also the most overlooked and least diagnosed site of trauma in the head and neck region. The condyle forms the very cornerstone of mandibular form and function and therefore injuries to the mandibular condyle in growing children may adversely affect growth and development of the jaws and the occlusion. The aim of this article is to present an overview of condylar injuries in growing patients for the purpose of increasing the awareness of all dental practitioners involved in the treatment of

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction and facial pain caused by neoplasms. Report of three cases.

The most frequent causes of painful limitation of temporomandibular joint function are myofascial pain dysfunction or anterior disk displacement. A potential problem in dealing with those patients is the risk of misdiagnosing the rare patient who has a neoplastic disease, primary or metastatic to the epipharyngeal region, parotid gland, jaws, or temporomandibular joint. Three cases are presented in which progressively worsening limitation of mandibular movement and increasing pain led to the diagnosis of a neoplasm in the temporomandibular joint region. The article illustrates the necessity of

[Loss of marginal alveolar bone and tooth mobility].

In the article the relation between initial mobility of incisors of both jaws and the level of marginal alveolar bone is described. The regression lines representing the dependence of mobility on marginal bone level at various loading forces confirm stepwise the nature of the force transmission from tooth to periodontal support tissues. The dependence of regression line slope on increasing inflammatory periodontal pathology indicates increasing loading of alveolar bone over tension of connective tissue fibers as well as increasing of pressure. This can further accelerate alveolar bone resorpti

[Chondrosarcoma: review of the literature and report of a case located in the maxilla].

Chondrosarcomas of the jaws and facial region are very rare tumors when compared with other bony tumors. It may show growth for several months or it may present as a rapidly growing tumor causing facial deformity, nasal obstruction, epistaxis, visual disturbances and teeth dislocation. Tumor radiologic evaluation must be done very carefully with conventional techniques, CT or M.R. Treatment must be surgical with wide an block excision. Treated patients should have a long-term follow up, because may recur, even after years.

Reconstruction of orbital defects with autogenous bone from mandibular symphysis.

Autotransplant bone is superior to other bone, cartilage, or alloplastic materials for the reconstruction of orbital floor defects. The bone used for filling orbital floor defects is taken from the symphysis of the lower jaw. The piece of bone, up to 3.5 X 1.5 cm in diameter is strong enough to support the orbital contents, while at the same time it is easily modelled and positioned. This method is indicated for reconstruction of the orbital floor, with or without rim defects. Taking of the transplant, while retaining the lower margin of the mandibular symphysis, preserves the contour of the c

Classification and treatment of hemifacial microsomia.

On the basis of 37 surgically treated patients with hemifacial microsomia, an anatomical-surgical classification was developed which divides these patients into five categories to facilitate surgical planning and help standardize treatment. Treatment was founded on the cooperation of a large craniofacial team. Osteotomies of the jaws, construction of the TM joint with costochondral grafts, onlay bone grafts, and genioplasty were performed to improve facial form and function. Facial scars were avoided. After three-dimensional skeletal alignment, there was rarely a compelling need for subsequent

Systemic sarcoidosis presenting with Horner's syndrome and mandibular paresthesia.

A patient with Stage I systemic sarcoid (affecting the mediastinum and cervical lymph nodes) is presented. This patient had ptosis of the eyelid and miosis (Horner's syndrome) due to involvement of the cervical-thoracic sympathetic nerves by the granulomatous process. Bony destruction simulating periodontal disease occurred in the molar-premolar region and caused pain and paresthesia. Systemic sarcoid may occur more commonly in the jaws than reported cases would indicate. Sarcoidosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis when periodontal disease appears refractory to local therapy

Intraneural and perineural epithelial structures.

The fact that numerous embryologic epithelial remnants are a normal occurrence in the oral region is well known. That some of these epithelial remnants occur within peripheral nerves is less well known. This study presents examples of intraneural epithelial rests from 3 different anatomic sites: the soft tissues of the jaws (a juxtaoral organ of Chievitz), the posterior maxilla (an ondotogenic rest), and the anterior maxilla (a nasopalatine duct remnant). The purpose of this paper is to draw the attention of surgical pathologists to this phenomenon in the head and neck in order to avoid extens

[Direct laryngoscopy under difficult conditions (author's transl)].

The direct view into the glottis can be difficult due to long teeth in the upper jaw or abnormities of the neck vertebrae. It is recommended in these cases to use either a mediastinoscope with a lateral slot or the McIntosh laryngoscope, which is commonly used for intubation. The latter can be attached to the chest stay of the normal laryngoscope by using a special joint. The tip of the McIntosh laryngoscope is inserted into the valleculae instead of loading up the epiglottis as is done with the normal laryngoscope. Recommended aids for ciopsy or polypectomy are the 30 degrees-optical system o

Accuracy of full arch scans performed with nine different scanning patterns- an in vitro study.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of the accuracy of direct digitization of maxillary scans depending on the scanning strategy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A maxillary model with a metal bar as a reference structure fixed between the second molars was digitized using the CEREC Primescan AC scanner (N = 225 scans). Nine scanning strategies were selected (n = 25 scans per strategy), differing in scan area segmentation (F = full jaw, H = half jaw, S = sextant) and scan movement pattern (L = linear, Z = zig-zag, C = combined). Trueness was assessed by evaluating linear differences in the X, Y, and Z axes and angu

Converting dose-area product to effective dose in dental cone-beam computed tomography using organ-specific deep learning.

OBJECTIVE: To develop an accurate method for converting dose-area product (DAP) to patient dose for dental cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) using deep learning. METHODS: A total of 24 384 CBCT exposures of an adult phantom were simulated with PCXMC 2.0, using permutations of tube voltage, filtration, source-isocenter distance, beam width/height, and isocenter position. Equivalent organ doses as well as DAP values were recorded. Next, using the aforementioned scan parameters as inputs, neural networks (NN) were trained using Keras for estimating the equivalent dose per DAP for each organ.

Revisiting Old Questions With New Methods: The Effect of Embryonic Motility on Skull Development in the Domestic Chick.

Muscle loading is known to influence skeletal morphology. Therefore, modification of the biomechanical environment is expected to cause coordinated morphological changes to the bony and cartilaginous tissues. Understanding how this musculoskeletal coordination contributes to morphological variation has relevance to health sciences, developmental biology, and evolutionary biology. To investigate how muscle loading influences skeletal morphology, we replicate a classic in ovo embryology experiment in the domestic chick (Gallus gallus domesticus) while harnessing modern methodologies that allow u

Biofilm volume and acidification within initial biofilms formed in situ on buccally and palatally exposed bracket material.

PURPOSE: Acidification by bacterial biofilms at the bracket/tooth interface is one of the most common problems in fixed orthodontic treatments, which can lead to white spot lesions (WSL) and caries. As lingual brackets were shown to exhibit reduced WSL formation clinically, the aim of this in situ study was to compare initial intraoral biofilm formation and acidification on bracket-like specimens placed buccally and palatally in the upper jaw as a possible cause for this observation. METHODS: Intraoral biofilm was collected from splints equipped with buccally and palatally exposed test specim
