Effect of public knowledge, attitudes, and behavior on willingness to undergo colorectal cancer screening using the health belief model.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Success of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening is dependent in part on the proportion of uptake by the targeted population. We aimed in this study to identify factors that were associated with willingness to undergo CRC screening based on the health belief model (HBM). PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study among citizens of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Demographic data collected included gender, age, education, marital status, employment status, a history of CRC in the family or knowing a friend with CRC, as well as income. A questionnaire was developed in Arabic base

Patient reluctance toward tamoxifen use for breast cancer primary prevention.

BACKGROUND: The National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP) P-1 trial demonstrated that tamoxifen reduces the incidence of new breast cancers by 49% in women at increased risk for breast cancer development. Tamoxifen does have side effects, however, including marginally increased risks of endometrial cancer and thromboembolic events. In this study, women at increased risk for breast cancer development were offered tamoxifen. Their knowledge of tamoxifen as a chemopreventive agent was assessed, and factors influencing their acceptance of tamoxifen and willingness to take it were

The concepts of "domestication" and "artificial selection" and their significance in the work of Charles Darwin.

This analysis examines the terms "domestication" and "selection" presented in Darwin's The variation of animals and plants under domestication, and the significance he gave to these concepts. This approach focuses on how Darwin drew upon knowledge generated centuries earlier by experts in breeding and cultivation to modify prevailing definitions and use this semantic shift as a primary instrument to defend his theory. The construction of the "analogy" between natural and artificial selection was not merely a heuristic resource, but rather the result of an inductive generalization grounded in i

[ENT emergencies in general practice (part 1)].

ENT complaints are common in primary care, yet their assessment can be challenging. Their clinical evaluation requires a knowledge of anatomy, pathology, and differential diagnoses. The boundaries between benign conditions and those requiring specific treatment or specialist referral is sometimes unclear. A structured clinical reasoning process, combined with a few key references, helps avoid the most common pitfalls. This illustrated practical guide is designed to support primary care physicians in providing safe, pragmatic, and guideline-based management. This first part deals with infectiou

ERF-Related Craniosynostosis in a Patient With Hypochondroplasia: A Case Report.

We report a case of multiple suture craniosynostosis in a patient with hypochondroplasia. The patient presented with short stature marked by a relatively long trunk and short extremities. The clinical and radiological findings were suggestive of hypochondroplasia. Additionally, craniosynostosis was identified during the evaluation, which is an unusual finding in hypochondroplasia. To further investigate, exome sequencing was performed, revealing previously reported pathogenic heterozygous variants in FGFR3 and ERF genes. Exome sequencing not only enhances the accuracy of diagnosing individual

Venetoclax-based chemotherapy failure in adult T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia with NUP98::ADD3 fusion: a case report.

NUP98 fusions are molecularly rare in T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL), with limited data available regarding treatment response and clinical outcomes. Here, we report a case of T-ALL harboring a NUP98::ADD3 fusion (involving NUP98 exon 13 and ADD3 exon 13), representing only the second documented instance of this genetic rearrangement in T-ALL. Notably, the patient demonstrated refractoriness to venetoclax-based chemotherapy. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a T-ALL case with the NUP98::ADD3 fusion exhibiting resistance to venetoclax-containing regimens.

[Modern corneal diagnostics as the key for the correct classification of the disease and optimal treatment decisions].

Corneal diseases include a wide spectrum of different manifestations (inflammatory/noninflammatory) that need to be accurately classified for precise diagnosis and targeted treatment. In addition to the anamnesis and slit lamp biomicroscopy, further device-based examinations can be performed to narrow down the diagnosis. Nowadays, modern corneal imaging provides a variety of technologies, such as topography, tomography, in vivo confocal microscopy and analysis of biomechanics, which are able to reliably classify different pathologies. Knowledge of the available examination modalities helps to

Removing barriers to accessing medical cannabis for paediatric patients.

Medical cannabis (MC) may offer therapeutic benefits for children with complex neurological conditions and chronic diseases. In Canada, parents, and caregivers frequently report encountering barriers when accessing MC for their children. These include negative preconceived notions about risks and benefits, challenges connecting with a knowledgeable healthcare provider (HCP), the high cost of MC products, and navigating MC product shortages. In this manuscript, we explore several of these barriers and provide recommendations to decision-makers to enable a family-centered and evidence-based appr

The T-type calcium channelosome.

T-type calcium channels perform crucial physiological roles across a wide spectrum of tissues, spanning both neuronal and non-neuronal system. For instance, they serve as pivotal regulators of neuronal excitability, contribute to cardiac pacemaking, and mediate the secretion of hormones. These functions significantly hinge upon the intricate interplay of T-type channels with interacting proteins that modulate their expression and function at the plasma membrane. In this review, we offer a panoramic exploration of the current knowledge surrounding these T-type channel interactors, and spotlight

Preputial lymphangioma in a stallion: First report.

This short communication describes a case of a 30-year-old stallion with a mass on the base of the penis causing paraphimosis. The patient was submitted to anti-inflammatory and diuretic therapy with no signs of improvement, so 16 days after the lesion was detected, the animal was euthanized. Necropsy was performed, and histopathological assessment of the lesion was conducted. The mass was composed primarily of channels and cavernous structures, lined by elongated cells of vascular origin, located in the preputium. The lesion was diagnosed as a preputial lymphangioma. [Adrenoleukodystrophy: Lorenzo's Oil].

Lorenzo's Oil, an American movie released in 1992, is based on a true story of a couple who spare no effort to search for a cure for their 5-year-old son who gradually develops eccentricities and signs of progressive motor and speech disturbances and is diagnosed with adrenoleukodystrophy. Despite lack of medical knowledge, Lorenzo's parents embark on a mission to study the disease on their own and eventually discover a therapeutic mixture referred to as Lorenzo's oil. Most characters in the movie retained real-life names. Even after its release in 1992, the movie has provided some subjects in

An expert opinion of the Association of Cardiovascular Interventions and the Working Group on Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy of the Polish Cardiac Society related to the place of prasugrel in the prevention of cardiovascular events in patients with acute coronary syndromes.

Based on many randomized clinical trials, it can be concluded that dual antiplatelet therapy is one of the best-studied treatments in the field of cardiovascular medicine. For many years prasugrel and ticagrelor have been preferred inhibitors of the platelet P2Y12 receptor in patients with acute coronary syndromes. These drugs enable faster, stronger, and more consistent inhibition of platelets and lead to better clinical outcomes than clopidogrel. The following document is an expert group opinion summarizing the latest knowledge in the field of antiplatelet therapy in the prevention of cardio

Psittacine Sedation and Anesthesia.

Successful management of sedation/anesthesia of psittacine species relies on familiarity with their specific anatomy and physiology, and detailed knowledge of the recent advancements in applied pharmacology of the anesthetics and perianesthetic monitoring of cardiovascular and respiratory functions. Each sedation/anesthetic plan should be patient-specific, developed based on preexisting conditions, size, species, age, and estimated risk. Other key factors to improve safety, quality of perioperative care, and client satisfaction are anticipation of complications, extension of close monitoring t

Fat embolism syndrome in a patient with a right undisplaced femoral neck fracture.

Fat embolism syndrome (FES) is a rare condition characterised by the classic triad of respiratory distress, neurologic symptoms and petechial rash. Here, we encountered a case of FES in a patient with an asymptomatic right undisplaced femoral neck fracture (Garden Stage II). FES was diagnosed based on the Gurd and Willson's diagnostic criteria and brain magnetic resonance imaging features. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of FES in a patient with an undisplaced femoral neck fracture. This study highlights the importance of considering the possibility of FES even in patients
