Validation of the Arabic version of the composite autonomic symptom score 31 questionnaire in diabetic autonomic neuropathy.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic autonomic neuropathy (DAN) is a significant complication of diabetes. The Composite Autonomic Symptom Score-31 (COMPASS-31) is a widely used and validated instrument to assess autonomic dysfunction, yet no validation of its use exists in the Arabic language. In this study, we aimed to develop and validate an Arabic language version of the COMPASS-31 (A-COMPASS-31) in a cohort of Egyptian patients with DAN. METHODS: We enrolled 20 diabetic subjects with DAN and 20 age- and sex-matched diabetic subjects without DAN. Following International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and O

Benchmarking information extraction of physical activity from electronic health record with large language models: an natural language processing pipeline and comparative evaluation.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to develop a data model and a natural language processing (NLP) pipeline for representing physical activity (PA) in Electronic Health Records (EHRs), and to evaluate transformer- and Large Language Model (LLM)-based classifiers for sentence-level PA attribute classification. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed PA documentation across three patient cohorts (cancer, COVID, and Alzheimer's disease) using structured and unstructured EHR data. A conceptual schema was developed to represent PA and its linguistic attributes. Five BERT models and three modern LLMs (Llama3-8B, MedA

Constructing formal models of cryptographic protocols from Alice&Bob style specifications via LLM.

Automated formal analysis is a fundamental method for ensuring the security of cryptographic protocol design. This approach entails two stages: formal modeling and formal analysis. While significant research has been conducted on formal analysis methodologies, there remains insufficient exploration into formal modeling, which has hindered the broader dissemination and development of automated formal analysis. In this paper, we address this challenge by delving into methodologies for the synthesis of formal languages, which are instrumental in constructing formal models for security protocol an

Performance of Natural Language Processing versus International Classification of Diseases Codes in Building Registries for Patients With Fall Injury: Retrospective Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Standardized registries, such as the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes, are commonly built using administrative codes assigned to patient encounters. However, patients with fall injury are often coded using subsequent injury codes, such as hip fractures. This necessitates manual screening to ensure the accuracy of data registries. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to automate the extraction of fall incidents and mechanisms using natural language processing (NLP) and compare this approach with the ICD method. METHODS: Clinical notes for patients with fall-induced hip

The Core Outcome Measures Index (COMI) comes of age: 18 years of efficient and effective patient-reported outcome measurement in the field of spinal disorders. Part 1. Development of the COMI, interpretation of scores, and use in research.

In 1998, an international and multidisciplinary group of experts (from the fields of spine surgery, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, rheumatology, primary care medicine, internal medicine, health economics and epidemiology) proposed a short multidimensional series of core outcome items for use in patients with low back disorders. In 2005 and 2006, two independent research groups published studies validating these items when combined to form an outcome instrument that was subsequently coined the Core Outcome Measures Index for the back (COMI-back). It now exists in at least 22 languages, is

Association of verbal and non-verbal theory of mind abilities with non-coding variants of OXTR in youth with autism spectrum disorder and typically developing individuals: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: The ability to attribute mental states to others is called theory of mind (ToM) and is a substantial component of social cognition. This ability is abnormally developed in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Several studies over the past decade have identified the oxytocin receptor gene (OXTR) and its variants as promising components for explaining the molecular mechanisms underlying Theory of Mind (ToM). The main aim of this study is to examine the association between rs2268498 and rs53576, two functional single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), and verbal and non-verb

MBORS: Mosquito vector Biocontrol Ontology and Recommendation System.

BACKGROUND OBJECTIVES: Mosquito vectors are disease-causing insects, responsible for various life-threatening vector-borne diseases such as dengue, Zika, malaria, chikungunya, and lymphatic filariasis. In practice, synthetic insecticides are used to control the mosquito vector, but, the continuous usage of synthetic insecticides is toxic to human health resulting in communicable diseases. Non-toxic biocontrol agents such as bacteria, fungus, plants, and mosquito densoviruses play a vital role in controlling mosquitoes. Community awareness of mosquito biocontrol agents is required to control ve

Methodology for adapting a co-created early childhood development intervention and implementation strategies for use by frontline workers in India and Guatemala: a systematic application of the FRAME-IS framework.

There is little evidence on optimizing the effectiveness and implementation of evidence-based early childhood development (ECD) interventions when task-shifted to frontline workers. In this Methods Forum paper, we describe our adaptation of the International Guide for Monitoring Child Development (GMCD) for task-shifting to frontline workers in Guatemala and India. In 2021-2022, implementers, trainers, frontline workers, caregivers, and international GMCD experts collaborated to adapt the GMCD for a task shifted implementation by frontline workers. We used an eight-step co-creating process: as

Effects of grading rubrics on EFL learners' writing in an EMI setting.

Despite considerable evidence that supports the use of grading rubrics (GRs) as tools for written corrective feedback, there is a paucity of research that investigates which of the different types of GRs best develops learners' International English Language Testing System (IELTS) writing scores in English as a medium of instruction (EMI)-contested settings. This study attempted to explore which rubric types (i.e., holistic, ESL composition profile, correction code, and IELTS) best assist English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners in writing proficiency and which type leads to improving IELT

Greenspace with overweight and obesity: A systematic review and meta-analysis of epidemiological studies up to 2020.

Several reviews have been conducted to assess the association between greenspace and overweight or obesity, but the conclusions were inconsistent. However, an updated comprehensive review and meta-analysis is warranted, because several high-quality papers have been published more recently. The objectives of this study are to systematically and quantitatively assess the evidence for a link between greenspace with overweight/obesity and to make specific recommendations for further research. We searched three English language databases, four Chinese language databases and the reference lists of p

The Internet and drug safety: what are the implications for pharmacovigilance?

Use of the Internet is becoming widespread throughout the world. Its use in the domain of drug safety and pharmacovigilance is spreading rapidly. Governments and industry have taken the lead in developing extensive web sites. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the European Agency for the Evaluation of Medicinal Products (EMEA) and other agencies have developed sites containing enormous amounts of information both on pharmacovigilance in general and on specific drugs in particular. Under the US 'Freedom of Information Act' the FDA has put major parts of its adverse event database on lin

Facilitating Autism Service Navigation, Parenting, and Self-Care Within a Community-Based Organization: A Pilot Feasibility Study With Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Families.

Health care and early education systems are common entry points for autism identification and specialized services. However, culturally and linguistically diverse families are less likely to experience timely or positive interactions within these systems. This pilot feasibility study examined implementation outcomes of using non-specialist providers (NSPs) within a community-based non-profit organization to support early service navigation while also promoting caregiver use of evidence-based parenting and self-care strategies. Six multilingual NSPs completed a web-based training and delivered

Iowa Brain-Behavior Modeling Toolkit: An Open-Source MATLAB Tool for Inferential and Predictive Modeling of Imaging-Behavior and Lesion-Deficit Relationships.

The traditional analytical framework taken by neuroimaging studies in general, and lesion-behavior studies in particular, has been inferential in nature and has focused on identifying and interpreting statistically significant effects within the sample under study. While this framework is well-suited for hypothesis testing approaches, achieving the modern goal of precision medicine requires a different framework that is predictive in nature and that focuses on maximizing the predictive power of models and evaluating their ability to generalize beyond the data that were used to train them. Homeplace-Centered Nursing Homecare for Older Adult Migrants: A Situation-Specific Theory Derivation.

Older adult migrants often experience language barriers, cultural dissonance, fragmented continuity of care, and inequitable access to home health care. Existing nursing theories do not fully explain how migration, aging, cultural identity, relational care, and the meaning of home intersect in practice. Guided by Walker and Avant's theory derivation approach, this paper uses bell hooks' conceptualization of homeplace as the source conceptual domain and integrates nursing theories and empirical evidence to develop a situation-specific Homeplace-Centered Nursing Homecare Theory. The theory ident
