High-resolution European daily soil moisture derived with machine learning (2003-2020).

Machine learning (ML) has emerged as a novel tool for generating large-scale land surface data in recent years. ML can learn the relationship between input and target, e.g. meteorological variables and in-situ soil moisture, and then estimate soil moisture across space and time, independently of prior physics-based knowledge. Here we develop a high-resolution (0.1°) daily soil moisture dataset in Europe (SoMo.ml-EU) using Long Short-Term Memory trained with in-situ measurements. The resulting dataset covers three vertical layers and the period 2003-2020. Compared to its previous version with a

Machine Learning-Based Peripheral Artery Disease Identification Using Laboratory-Based Gait Data.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) manifests from atherosclerosis, which limits blood flow to the legs and causes changes in muscle structure and function, and in gait performance. PAD is underdiagnosed, which delays treatment and worsens clinical outcomes. To overcome this challenge, the purpose of this study is to develop machine learning (ML) models that distinguish individuals with and without PAD. This is the first step to using ML to identify those with PAD risk early. We built ML models based on previously acquired overground walking biomechanics data from patients with PAD and healthy con

The potential role of machine learning in modelling advanced chronic liver disease.

The use of artificial intelligence is rapidly increasing in medicine to support clinical decision making mostly through diagnostic and prediction models. Such models derive from huge databases (big data) including a large variety of health-related individual patient data (input) and the corresponding diagnosis and/or outcome (labels). Various types of algorithms (e.g. neural networks) based on powerful computational ability (machine), allow to detect the relationship between input and labels (learning). More complex algorithms, like recurrent neural network can learn from previous as well as a

Robust enhancement of motor sequence learning with 4 mA transcranial electric stimulation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Motor learning experiments with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) at 2 mA have produced mixed results. We hypothesize that tDCS boosts motor learning provided sufficiently high field intensity on the motor cortex. METHODS: In a single-blinded design, 108 healthy participants received either anodal (N = 36) or cathodal (N = 36) tDCS at 4 mA total, or no stimulation (N = 36) while they practiced a 12-min sequence learning task. Anodal stimulation was delivered across four electrode pairs (1 mA each), with anodes above the right parietal lobe and cathodes

Reinforcement learning evaluation of treatment policies for patients with hepatitis C virus.

BACKGROUND: Evaluation of new treatment policies is often costly and challenging in complex conditions, such as hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatment, or in limited-resource settings. We sought to identify hypothetical policies for HCV treatment that could best balance the prevention of cirrhosis while preserving resources (financial or otherwise). METHODS: The cohort consisted of 3792 HCV-infected patients without a history of cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma at baseline from the national Veterans Health Administration from 2015 to 2019. To estimate the efficacy of hypothetical treatment po

Bank Voles Show More Impulsivity in IntelliCage Learning Tasks than Wood Mice.

Impulsivity is a personality trait of healthy individuals, but in extreme forms common in mental disorders. Previous behavioral testing of wild-caught bank voles and wood mice suggested impulsiveness in bank voles. Here, we compared behavioral performance of bank voles and wood mice in tests for response control in the IntelliCage. In the reaction time task, a test similar to the five-choice serial-reaction time task (5CSRTT), bank voles made more premature responses. Impulsivity in the reaction time task was associated with smaller medial habenular nucleus in bank voles. Additional tests reve

Machine learning in primary biliary cholangitis: A novel approach for risk stratification.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Machine learning (ML) provides new approaches for prognostication through the identification of novel subgroups of patients. We explored whether ML could support disease sub-phenotyping and risk stratification in primary biliary cholangitis (PBC). METHODS: ML was applied to an international dataset of PBC patients. The dataset was split into a derivation cohort (training set) and a validation cohort (validation set), and key clinical features were analysed. The outcome was a composite of liver-related death or liver transplantation. ML and standard survival analysis were pe

Predicting cognitive decline in Parkinson's disease using FDG-PET-based supervised learning.

BackgroundCognitive impairment is a common symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD) that increases in risk and severity as the disease progresses. An accurate prediction of the risk of progression from the mild cognitive impairment (MCI) stage to the dementia (PDD) stage is an unmet clinical need.MethodsWe investigated the use of a supervised learning algorithm called the support vector machine (SVM) to retrospectively stratify patients on the basis of brain fluorodeoxyglucose-PET (FDG-PET) scans. Of 43 patients with PD-MCI according to the baseline scan, 23 progressed to PDD within a 5-year period

[Nursing Students' Learning and Issues in Gerontological Nursing in Online Practical Training].

The aim of this research is to clarify student learning and the issues they faced in the practice of gerontological nursing that our students completed online from home during the COVID-19 pandemic. A survey was conducted involving 71 third-year students who completed practical training in October 2020, and their choice of answers regarding "students' online learning environment" and free text answers regarding "what they have learned through practical training" were investigated through e-Learning systems. A total of 68 valid responses were analyzed, and the following 5 categories regarding s

Challenges of Multiplex Assays for COVID-19 Research: A Machine Learning Perspective.

Multiplex assays that provide simultaneous measurement of multiple analytes in biological samples have now developed into widely used technologies in the study of diseases, drug discovery, and other medical areas. These approaches span multiple assay systems and can provide readouts of specific assay components with similar accuracy as the respective single assay measurements. Multiplexing allows the consumption of lower sample volumes, lower costs, and higher throughput compared with carrying out single assays. A number of recent studies have demonstrated the impact of multiplex assays in the

Machine Learning-Based Radiological Features and Diagnostic Predictive Model of Xanthogranulomatous Cholecystitis.

BACKGROUND: Xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis (XGC) is a rare benign chronic inflammatory disease of the gallbladder that is sometimes indistinguishable from gallbladder cancer (GBC), thereby affecting the decision of the choice of treatment. Thus, this study aimed to analyse the radiological characteristics of XGC and GBC to establish a diagnostic prediction model for differential diagnosis and clinical decision-making. METHODS: We investigated radiological characteristics confirmed by the RandomForest and Logistic regression to establish computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging

Adaptability and learning Intraprofessional collaboration of residents during the COVID-19 pandemic.

CONTEXT: The COVID-19 pandemic created a worldwide public health emergency, in which hospitals created new COVID departments and doctors from different disciplines had to work together. In the Netherlands, a large proportion of doctors in these departments were residents. With knowledge of the disease developing only gradually, the influx of COVID-19 patients called for adaptability, innovative work behavior, and intraprofessional collaboration (intraPC) between residents and between residents and medical specialists. RESEARCH GOAL: This study investigates how the delivery of COVID-19 care in

Generalizable deep learning model for early Alzheimer's disease detection from structural MRIs.

Early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease plays a pivotal role in patient care and clinical trials. In this study, we have developed a new approach based on 3D deep convolutional neural networks to accurately differentiate mild Alzheimer's disease dementia from mild cognitive impairment and cognitively normal individuals using structural MRIs. For comparison, we have built a reference model based on the volumes and thickness of previously reported brain regions that are known to be implicated in disease progression. We validate both models on an internal held-out cohort from The Alzheimer's Disea

Predictors of pharmacotherapy outcomes for body dysmorphic disorder: a machine learning approach.

BACKGROUND: Serotonin-reuptake inhibitors (SRIs) are first-line pharmacotherapy for the treatment of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), a common and severe disorder. However, prior research has not focused on or identified definitive predictors of SRI treatment outcomes. Leveraging precision medicine techniques such as machine learning can facilitate the prediction of treatment outcomes. METHODS: The study used 10-fold cross-validation support vector machine (SVM) learning models to predict three treatment outcomes (i.e. response, partial remission, and full remission) for 97 patients with BDD r

Learning from Controversy and Revisiting the Randomized Trials of Secondary Mitral Regurgitation.

Until recently, conventional mitral valve surgery has been the treatment of choice even in secondary mitral regurgitation. Recent evidence, however, advocates the use of transcatheter edge-to-edge mitral valve repair (TEER) of the mitral valve. This has been reflected by the change in guidelines of the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association. We reviewed the literature to shed light on the risks and benefits of all interventions, surgical, transcatheter and guideline-directed medical therapy. Secondary mitral regurgitation occurs due to an imbalance between closing forces and

Peri-operative care of elective adult surgical patients with a learning disability.

People with a learning disability can experience significant problems in accessing healthcare and this may be partly reflected in worse health outcomes compared with the general population, including a shorter life expectancy. The Equality Act (2010) requires that organisations and individuals make changes to the way services are provided for all disabled people to mitigate, as far as possible, any disadvantage they may face in accessing these services. These changes are termed 'reasonable adjustments'. This article describes the reasonable adjustments that can be made to facilitate the admiss

Detecting defense mechanisms from Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) transcripts using machine learning.

OBJECTIVE: Defensive functioning (i.e., unconscious process used to manage real or perceived threats) may play a role in the development of various psychopathologies. It is typically assessed via observer rating measures, however, human coding of defensive functioning is resource-intensive and time-consuming. The purpose of this study was to develop a machine learning approach to automate coding of defense mechanisms from interview transcripts. METHOD: Participants included a clinical sample of women with binge-eating disorder (n = 92) and a community sample without binge-eating disorder (n =
