Financial Impact of Magnetic Resonance Imaging in the Surgical Treatment of Foot and Ankle Osteomyelitis.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is generally considered the most sensitive imaging for diagnosis of osteomyelitis; however, it is associated with significant cost and is at times ordered as initial screening imaging when a less resource-intensive test would suffice. The purpose of this retrospective cohort study was to examine the differences between patients with osteomyelitis of the foot and ankle, and their subsequent treatment course, who underwent MRI compared with those who did not. Financial impact of MRI as it relates to clinical decision-making was also calculated. Patients treated f

A comparison of ferumoxytol with gadolinium as contrast agents for the diagnostic magnetic resonance imaging of osteomyelitis.

BACKGROUND: Ferumoxytol, an FDA-approved superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticle (SPION) preparation used for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia, is also known to be taken up by macrophages in areas of infection or inflammation, where it produces negative contrast changes on T2-weighted MR images. PURPOSE: We sought to compare Ferumoxytol-induced MRI contrast changes with those observed using standard-of-care Gadolinium in patients presenting with symptoms suggestive of osteomyelitis. SUBJECTS: Out of eighteen enrolled patients, 15 had MR imaging with both ferumoxytol and gadolinium.

Whole-body magnetic resonance imaging in children - how and why? A systematic review.

Whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is increasingly being used for a number of indications. Our aim was to review and describe indications and scan protocols for diagnostic value of whole-body MRI for multifocal disease in children and adolescents, we conducted a systematic search in Medline, Embase and Cochrane for all published papers until November 2018. Relevant subject headings and free text words were used for the following concepts: 1) whole-body, 2) magnetic resonance imaging and 3) child and/or adolescent. Included were papers in English with a relevant study design that repor

Shoulder Position During Magnetic Resonance Arthrogram Significantly Affects Capsular Measurements.

PURPOSE: To determine whether change in shoulder position between internal rotation (IR) and external rotation (ER) during magnetic resonance arthrography (MRA) affects previously defined capsular measurements and to determine the utility of rotation in the diagnosis of instability. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted of patients who received a shoulder MRA with humeral IR and ER views. Patients with an arthroscopically confirmed diagnosis of instability and those with clinically stable shoulders, no history of instability, and no MRA findings of instability were identified and compa

The agreement between magnetic resonance imaging and arthroscopic findings in temporomandibular joint disorders.

The aim of this retrospective observational study was to assess the potential agreement between independent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and arthroscopic findings and their respective contributions to a final diagnosis in patients with refractory temporomandibular joint disorders. Two dentomaxillofacial radiologists and two oral and maxillofacial surgeons scored 50 joints. All observers, who were blinded to additional clinical information, used a specific scoring form and selected one or more diagnostic labels. Agreement between MRI and arthroscopy and their contributions to the final diag

Silent Sinus Syndrome: Interesting Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging Findings.

Silent sinus syndrome (SSS) is the spontaneous unilateral collapse of the maxillary sinus and orbital floor with complete or partial opacification of the collapsed sinus. The key features in a patient who presents with SSS are painless progressive unilateral maxillary sinus disease in the absence of rhinosinusitis, trauma, or surgery. SSS is a rare disorder but could be under-diagnosed because of a lack of recognition. SSS is characterized by spontaneous and progressive enophthalmos ("sunken" eye-eye recession into the globe) and hypoglobus (globe displaced downward; and a drop in the pupillar

Four-dimensional-flow Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Aortic Valve and Thoracic Aorta.

Blood flow through the heart and great vessels is sensitive to time and multiple velocity directions. The assessment of its three-dimensional nature has been limited. Recent advances in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allow the comprehensive visualization and quantification of in vivo flow dynamics using four-dimensional (4D)-flow MRI. In addition, the technique provides the opportunity to obtain advanced hemodynamic measures. This article introduces 4D-flow MRI as it is currently used for blood flow visualization and quantification of cardiac hemodynamic parameters. It discusses its advantag

Subtype Diagnosis of Sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease with Diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

OBJECTIVE: Sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD) comprises several subtypes as defined by genetic and prion protein characteristics, which are associated with distinct clinical and pathological phenotypes. To date, no clinical test can reliably diagnose the subtype. We established two procedures for the antemortem diagnosis of sCJD subtype using diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS: MRI of 1,458 patients referred to the National Prion Disease Pathology Surveillance Center were collected through its consultation service. One neuroradiologist blind to the diagnosis scored 12

Results of Phosphorus Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy for Brain Metastases Correlate with Histopathologic Results.

BACKGROUND: Brain metastases (BMs) are classically well-circumscribed lesions. Still, the amount of edema in these neoplasms suggests either mechanisms of infiltration or defense. A better understanding of the mechanisms within the edema of BMs seems reasonable to preoperatively identify areas of potential infiltration and resect them. BMs represent tumors with high energy demand and cell turnover; therefore, they qualify for preoperative investigation with phosphorus-31 magnetic resonance spectroscopy (31PMRS), which reveals information about those characteristics. METHODS: Ten patients with

How to choose among fundoplication, magnetic sphincter augmentation or transoral incisionless fundoplication.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To examine current trends and research in nonmedical approaches to the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). RECENT FINDINGS: Long-term studies of GERD patients treated with transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF) have found that a large portion of patients resume proton pump inhibitor therapy. In patients with uncomplicated GERD, magnetic sphincter augmentation (MSA) shows excellent short-term results in both patient satisfaction and physiologic measures of GERD, with fewer postoperative side-effects than fundoplication, although dysphagia can be problem
