Rumination relates to reduced autobiographical memory specificity in formerly depressed patients following a self-discrepancy challenge: the case of autobiographical memory specificity reactivity.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Reduced Autobiographical Memory Specificity (rAMS) is a hypothesized vulnerability factor for depression. Rumination is thought to be one of the processes underlying rAMS, but research has failed to show an association between trait rumination and rAMS in individuals who are not currently depressed (e.g., community samples, college samples, and formerly depressed samples). The present study tested whether a challenge procedure that induces a self-discrepancy focus can elicit an association between trait rumination and rAMS in formerly depressed participants. METHODS

How best to identify a bipolar-related subtype among major depressive patients without spontaneous hypomania: superiority of age at onset criterion over recurrence and polarity?

BACKGROUND: History of high depressive recurrence (without history of mania/hypomania) has been proposed as a mood subtype close to bipolar disorders. Herein we test whether this is the best approach to this question. METHODS: We systematically evaluated consecutive 224 Major Depressive (MDD) and 336 Bipolar II Disorders (BP-II) outpatients in a private practice, by the SCID for DSM-IV (modified for better probing hypomania by Akiskal and Benazzi [Akiskal, H.S., Benazzi, F., 2005. MiR-129-5p alleviates depression and anxiety by increasing astrocyte ATP production partly through targeting deubiquitinase Mysm1.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a major global mental concern that severely affects quality of life, yet current pharmacological treatments remain limited in their effectiveness. Long-term chronic stress has been shown to increase the incidence of depression and anxiety. Micro RNAs (miRNAs) have been revealed to participate in the pathological process of depression and represent promising therapeutic targets. In this study, we found that microRNA-129-5p (miR-129-5p) was significantly decreased in the brains of depressive mice. Overexpression of miR-129-5p in the hippocampus effectively alle

Anxiety disorders and the onset of depression among adults in the community.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between anxiety disorders, panic attack and the risk of major depression among adults in the community. METHOD: Data were drawn from the Epidemiologic Catchment Area Program survey waves 1 (N = 20291) and 2 (N = 15849). Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to determine the risk of incident major depression at 12-month follow-up (wave 2) associated with each anxiety disorder and panic attacks assessed at wave 1, adjusting for differences in sociodemographic characteristics, and then controlling simultaneously for all anxiety disorders, and

Transdiagnostic patterns of electroencephalography (EEG)-derived aperiodic activity across schizophrenia-spectrum, bipolar, and depressive disorders: A systematic review.

Aperiodic electroencephalographic activity is proposed as a scalable marker of cortical population dynamics relevant to excitation-inhibition balance. However, it remains unclear whether aperiodic parameters represent disorder-specific abnormalities or context-sensitive indices of clinically relevant brain states. Consistent with systematic-review guidelines and a prospectively registered protocol, Ovid databases and PubMed were searched from inception through February 9, 2026, with updated manual searching conducted through July 14, 2026. Prevalence and clinical correlates of co-occurring insomnia and hypersomnia symptoms in depression.

BACKGROUND: The aim was to examine the prevalence and consequences of co-occurring insomnia and hypersomnia symptoms in depressed adults drawn from a representative sample of the U.S. population. METHOD: Data from 687 National Comorbidity Survey Replication (NCS-R) respondents meeting criteria for a major depressive episode (MDE) in the past year were included. Respondents completed clinical interviews that assessed 12-month DSM-IV disorders, impairment, mental health treatment, and depressive symptom severity. Outcomes were compared between respondents who experienced insomnia symptoms-only

Bipolar II disorder family history using the family history screen: findings and clinical implications.

Psychiatric family history of bipolar II disorder is understudied. The aims of the current study were to find the psychiatric family history of bipolar II patients using a new structured interview, the Family History Screen by Weissman et al (2000), and to find bipolar disorders family history predicting power for the diagnosis of bipolar II. One hundred sixty-four consecutive unipolar major depressive disorder (MDD) and 241 consecutive bipolar II major depressive episode (MDE) outpatients were interviewed with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID). The Family History Screen was

Effects of major depression on remission and relapse of substance dependence.

BACKGROUND: The effects of major depressive disorder (MDD) on the course of substance dependence may differ depending on the temporal relationship of depression to dependence. We investigated the effects of MDD on the outcome of substance dependence under 3 circumstances: (1) lifetime onset of MDD prior to lifetime onset of dependence onset, (2) current MDD occurring during a period of abstinence, and (3) current MDD during substance use that exceeded the expected effects of intoxication or withdrawal. METHODS: A sample of 250 inpatients with DSM-IV cocaine, heroin, and/or alcohol dependence

Epidemiology of depressive disorders in people living with HIV in Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis: Burden of depression in HIV in Africa.

OBJECTIVE: The burden of HIV infection is higher in Africa where 70% of people living with HIV (PLHIV) resides. Since depression can negatively impact the course of HIV infection, it is therefore important to accurately estimate its burden among PLHIV in the continent. METHODS: We searched multiple databases to identify articles published between January 2000 and February 2018, reporting the prevalence of (major) depressive disorders in PLHIV residing in Africa. We used a random-effects meta-analysis model to pool studies. RESULTS: Overall, 118 studies (60,476 participants, 19 countries) wer

The implications of medical and psychiatric comorbidity with panic disorder.

The frequent presentation of patients with panic disorder in medical settings may, in part, be explained by the physical symptoms inherent in panic disorder. However, a number of medical disorders have symptoms that overlap with panic disorder symptoms, and elevated panic disorder prevalence is comorbid with a number of medical illnesses, including respiratory disorders, vestibular dysfunction, and hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. The presence of medical comorbidity complicates the identification, presentation, and treatment of panic disorder. In addition, comorbid mood disorders occur comm

Astrocytes as a target of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to treat depression.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been reported to be effective in treating mood disorders such as major depressive disorder, however, its detailed mechanism of action is not fully understood. Human and animal experiments have demonstrated that tDCS promotes brain plasticity and have suggested that this consequence may underlie its therapeutic benefits. Nonetheless, the specific neurobiological underpinnings of tDCS-induced brain plasticity have only recently begun to be investigated. While brain plasticity occurs in synapses formed by neurons, astrocytes, a major glial cell t

The role of atypical antipsychotics in bipolar depression and anxiety disorders.

Bipolar disorder is a complex condition that includes symptoms of mania, depression, and often anxiety. Diagnosing and treating bipolar depression is challenging, with the disorder often being diagnosed as unipolar depression. In addition, comorbid anxiety can be a significant detractor to successful outcomes, increasing symptom severity, frequency of episodes and suicide rates, and decreasing response to antidepressant therapy. Anxiety often precedes and hastens the onset of bipolar disorder, and a shared genetic etiology has been suggested. Studies have demonstrated the efficacy of atypical

Peripheral thyroid hormone levels in treatment resistant depression.

BACKGROUND: Various abnormalities of thyroid function have been inconsistently reported in major depression. The inconsistency between studies may be due to several factors including the stage of treatment resistance. METHODS: One hundred and one patients with major depressive disorder receiving their first antidepressant for their current major depressant episode had baseline thyroid function test performed. On completion of treatment, their stage of antidepressant resistance was determined. RESULTS: Severity of depression but not any peripheral thyroid hormone level was associated with sta

Perceived Treatment Effectiveness as a Predictor of Public Support for Coercive Psychiatric Care.

OBJECTIVE: Public support for coercive psychiatric care has been growing. Whereas prior research attributed this trend to stigmatized perceptions of dangerousness or decisional incompetence, few studies explored alternative explanations. The authors therefore aimed to examine whether participants' demographic characteristics, familiarity with mental illness, and perceptions of treatment effectiveness predicted support for coercive care. METHODS: Adults (N=250) completed an online survey with vignettes describing individuals with schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, alcohol use disorder,

Exploring complex PTSD in patients visiting a psychiatric outpatient clinic in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Decades of research on trauma patients have shown that a post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) diagnosis does not always cover the full spectrum of symptoms after severe trauma. Complex PTSD (CPTSD) was recently introduced in the International Classification of Diseases 11th Revision. There have been no published studies on CPTSD in the South Asian region to date. The objective of this study was to evaluate CPTSD in a sample of trauma patients in Nepal. We also examined quality of life (QOL) and mental health comorbidities and their association with CPTSD caseness. One hundred patients with a
