Changes in diet from pregnancy to one year after birth: a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy and the first year after giving birth are marked by physiological and psychological changes. While it is well known that energy requirements change during this time, the question of how a woman's diet actually changes from pregnancy until 1 year postpartum has been left virtually unexplored. The present study employs a longitudinal design to investigate these changes. METHODS: Data were collected within the framework of the LIFE Child study (Leipzig, Germany). The diet composition and culture of eating of 110 women were assessed at 3 time points: in the 24th week of preg

Establishment and verification of a nomogram prediction model of hypertension risk in Xinjiang Kazakhs.

Hypertension is the main risk factor for cardiovascular and renal diseases. It is of great importance to develop effective risk prediction models to identify high-risk groups of hypertension. This study is to establish and verify a nomogram model for predicting the risk of hypertension among Kazakh herders in Xinjiang, China. This is a prospective cohort study. Totally, 5327 Kazakh herders from the Nanshan pastoral area of Xinjiang were enrolled. They were randomly divided into the modeling set of 3729 cases (70%) and the validation set of 1598 cases (30%). In the modeling set, univariate analy

Incidence and risk factors of C. trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae among young women from the Western Cape, South Africa: The EVRI study.

OBJECTIVE: Young women in South Africa are highly affected by sexually transmitted infections (STI), like C. trachomatis (CT) and N. gonorrhoeae (NG). We aimed to estimate the incidence of CT and NG, and its determinants, among young women from the Western Cape, South Africa, participating in an HPV vaccine trial (the EVRI study). METHODS: HIV-negative women aged 16-24 years were enrolled between October 2012 and July 2013. At enrolment and month 6 participants were screened for CT and NG (Anyplex CT/NG real-time detection method). A questionnaire on demographic and sexual history characteris

High levels of undiagnosed rectal STIs suggest that screening remains inadequate among Black gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men.

OBJECTIVE: To better understand rectal STI screening practices for Black gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (BGBMSM). FINDINGS: Although 15% of BGBMSM lab tested positive for a rectal STI, the majority of these (94%) were asymptomatic. Though all participants reported their status as HIV negative/unknown, 31 of 331 (9.4%) tested positive on HIV rapid tests. Neither condomless anal intercourse nor the number of male sex partners was associated with rectal STI or HIV diagnosis, although rectal STI diagnosis was positively related to testing HIV positive. CONCLUSIONS: Findings su

Exploring the effects of lifestyle on breast cancer risk, age at diagnosis, and survival: the EBBA-Life study.

PURPOSE: Whether an unfavorable lifestyle not only affects breast cancer risk, but also influences age at onset of breast cancer and survival, is under debate. METHODS: In a population-based cohort, the Energy Balance and Breast Cancer Aspects throughout life (EBBA-Life) study, a total of 17,145 women were included. During follow-up, 574 women developed invasive breast cancer. Breast cancer cases were followed for an additional 9.1 years. Detailed medical records were obtained. Cox's proportional hazard regression models were used to study the association between pre-diagnostic lifestyle fact

Positive findings of ethyl glucuronide in hair of young children from families with addiction background.

AIMS: Small children are expected to be abstinent from alcohol, and children's hair is frequently used as the blank matrix for calibration of the alcohol consumption marker ethyl glucuronide (EtG). The basal EtG concentrations of total abstainers were described to be 0.3-2.1 pg/mg (Pirro et al. 2013). It is examined whether this assumption is valid for children from families with addiction background. METHODS: In a social support system for families with drug and/or alcohol addicted parents, 161 hair samples from 126 children (age 1-14 years, hair segment 0-3 cm) were analyzed for EtG by a va

Prevalence and associated risk factors of periodic limb movement in sleep in two German population-based studies.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Periodic limb movements in sleep (PLMS) are frequent motor phenomena; however, population-based data are scarce. We assessed the prevalence of PLMS and factors associated with PLMS within two German population-based cohorts, the SHIP-TREND and BiDirect. METHODS: Single-night polysomnography was performed on 1107 subjects recruited from the general population (mean age: 52.9 years, 54.1% men) in the SHIP-TREND and on 247 participants (mean age: 57.6 years, 50.6% men) in the BiDirect. PLMS were evaluated using the standard criteria of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. So

Interventions for improving modifiable risk factor control in the secondary prevention of stroke.

BACKGROUND: People with stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA) are at increased risk of future stroke and other cardiovascular events. Stroke services need to be configured to maximise the adoption of evidence-based strategies for secondary stroke prevention. Smoking-related interventions were examined in a separate review so were not considered in this review. This is an update of our 2014 review. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of stroke service interventions for implementing secondary stroke prevention strategies on modifiable risk factor control, including patient adherence to presc

High Body Mass Index Masks Body Composition Differences in Physically Active Versus Sedentary Participants.

BACKGROUND: Despite the benefits of aerobic exercise on body composition, runners with high body mass index (BMI) remain understudied. We examined body composition differences between sedentary insulin-resistant [obese insulin-resistant sedentary (OS-IR)], sedentary insulin-sensitive [obese insulin-sensitive sedentary (OS-IS)], and trained [obese trained (OT)] individuals with high BMI (≥25 kg/m2). We hypothesized that after matching for high BMI, OT individuals would have less fat mass (absolute and relative) and greater lean mass than OS-IR or OS-IS individuals. METHODS: This is a retrospec

Comparison between Human and Bite-Based Methods of Estimating Caloric Intake.

BACKGROUND: Current methods of self-monitoring kilocalorie intake outside of laboratory/clinical settings suffer from a systematic underreporting bias. Recent efforts to make kilocalorie information available have improved these methods somewhat, but it may be possible to derive an objective and more accurate measure of kilocalorie intake from bite count. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to develop and examine the accuracy of an individualized bite-based measure of kilocalorie intake and to compare that measure to participant estimates of kilocalorie intake. It was hypothesized that kilocalorie i
