BACKGROUND: Preterm birth is the leading cause of neonatal deaths in low middle-income countries (LMICs), yet there exists a paucity of high-quality data from these countries. Most modelling estimates are based on studies using inaccurate methods of gestational age assessment. We aimed to fill this gap by measuring the population-based burden of preterm birth using early ultrasound dating in five countries in South-Asian and sub-Saharan Africa.
METHODS: We identified women early in pregnancy (<20 weeks based on last menstrual period) by home visits every 2-3 months (except in Zambia where the

BACKGROUND: Approximately 3 million neonatal deaths occur each year worldwide. Simple interventions have been tested and found to be effective in reducing the neonatal mortality. In order to effectively implement public health interventions, it is important to know the rates of neonatal mortality and understand the contributing risk factors. Hence, this prospective, population-based, observational study was carried out to inform these needs.
METHODS: The Global Network's Maternal Newborn Health Registry was initiated in the seven sites in 2008. Registry administrators (RAs) attempt to identif

BACKGROUND: Smoking during pregnancy is known to negatively affect pregnancy outcomes and it has been associated with numerous complications during pregnancy. Smoking is more common in younger pregnant women, but previous research has shown that adverse pregnancy outcomes related to older maternal age and smoking are even more harmful than with younger smokers. The aim of this study was to compare pregnancy outcomes among smoking and non-smoking pregnant women aged <35 years and ≥35 years.
METHODS: In this registry-based study, the data were collected from three national Finnish health regist

BACKGROUND: The rising global rate in caesarean delivery has been a source of concern to obstetricians worldwide. In spite of remarkable improvement in the safety of anaesthesia and surgical techniques, caesarean section has higher risks of maternal death when compared with normal vaginal delivery. Thus, the current emphasis is to limit the rising rate of caesarean section to as much as possible.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the rate of caesarean section, pregnancy out-come, major indications and complications of caesarean section.
METHODS: A five year (January 1(st) 2005 to December 31(st) 2009)

OBJECTIVE: Expectant management is among the current treatment options for pregnancies complicated by third-trimester bleeding at <36 weeks' gestation. The use of tocolytic agents to stop associated contractions is still somewhat controversial, however, and the number of cases reported to date is small. The purpose of our study was to find a large number of cases of preterm third-trimester bleeding that was treated with tocolytic agents and evaluate them for any evidence of potential harm related to the use of these agents.
STUDY DESIGN: Every case of third-trimester bleeding for a 6-year per

BACKGROUND: Birth asphyxia remains a leading cause of neonatal mortality and morbidity in low- and middle-income countries. In Kenya, it accounts for approximately 29% of neonatal deaths despite the implementation of national newborn care guidelines. This study investigated the risk factors associated with birth asphyxia at Pumwani Maternity Hospital, Nairobi, Kenya.
METHODS: A matched case-control study was conducted at Pumwani Maternity Hospital, Nairobi, Kenya, between February and September 2024. Cases were newborns with a five-minute APGAR score <7, while controls had a five-minute APGAR

BackgroundPuerperal sepsis remains a preventable contributor to maternal illness. Pregnancy-related sepsis is responsible for ∼10% to 15% of maternal deaths. Despite this burden, no comprehensive review has examined self-care practices related to its prevention. Therefore, this review sought to evaluate self-care behaviors aimed at preventing puerperal sepsis and to explore associated factors among postnatal women in Africa.Data Sources and MethodsWe conducted a systematic review and metaanalysis of 17 eligible studies on the prevalence of self-care practices for puerperal sepsis prevention an

BACKGROUND: Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) is a leading cause of maternal mortality, near-misses and morbidity in Uganda and globally. Kawempe National Referral Hospital (KNRH), Uganda's largest obstetric referral hospital, receives many obstetric emergencies, including PPH, from lower-level health facilities. Little is known about the outcomes and management of severe PPH at KNRH. This study aimed to map the occurrence, profile and management challenges of severe PPH at KNRH.
METHODS: A prospective hospital-based observational pilot study was conducted between 5th April and 30th May 2023 at KN

INTRODUCTION: Maternal obesity has been linked to adverse outcomes for mothers and their offspring, including, but not limited to gestational hypertension (gHTN), gestational diabetes (GDM), pre-eclampsia, fetal macrosomia, and emergency cesarean section. Recent investigations have also shown that obesity, as defined by a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30, especially severe obesity (BMI ≥ 40), is a risk factor for both hospitalization and death from COVID-19.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to determine the prevalence and association of maternal obesity at delivery with adverse antenatal,

OBJECTIVE: Low birth weight (LBW) is a serious public health problem in low- and middle-income countries and a leading cause of death in the first month of life. In India, about 18% of children are born with LBW (<2500 grams) in 2015-16. In this study, we aim to examine the influence of maternal factors and socio-demographic covariates on LBW in Indian children.
METHODS: Data were drawn from the fourth round of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-4), conducted in 2015-16. A cross-sectional study was designed using a stratified two-stage sampling technique. Cross-tabulation, Pearson's chi-

BACKGROUND: Over 4.2 million confirmed cases and more than 285,000 deaths, COVID-19 pandemic continues to harm significant number of people worldwide. Several studies have reported the impact of COVID-19 in general population; however, there is scarcity of information related to pharmacological management and maternal and perinatal outcomes during the pandemic. Altered physiological, anatomical, and immunological response during pregnancy makes it more susceptible to infections. Furthermore, during pregnancy, a woman undergoes multiple interactions with the health care system that increases he

BACKGROUND: Opioid use disorder (OUD) is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality for women, especially during the perinatal period. Opioid overdose has become a significant cause of maternal death in the United States, with rates highest in the immediate postpartum year. While pregnancy is a time of high motivation for healthcare engagement, unique challenges exist for pregnant women with OUD seeking both substance use treatment and maternity care, including managing change after birth. How women successfully navigate these barriers, engage in treatment, and abstain from substance

BACKGROUND: Offering a trial of labor (ToL) after previous caesarean section (CS) is an important strategy to reduce short- and long-term morbidity associated with repeated CS. We compared maternal and perinatal outcomes between ToL and elective repeat caesarean section (ERCS) at a district hospital in rural Rwanda.
METHODS: Audit of women's records with one prior CS who delivered at Ruhengeri district hospital in Rwanda between June 2013 and December 2014.
RESULTS: Out of 4131 women who came for delivery, 435 (11%) had scarred uteri. ToL, which often started at home or at health centers wit

Globally, abortion mortality accounts for approximately 13% of all maternal mortality. Unsafe abortion procedures, untrained abortion providers, restrictive abortion laws and high maternal mortality and morbidity from abortion tend to occur together. Unplanned and unwanted pregnancies constitute a serious public health responsibility. While fertility has declined by half in developing countries, the motivation to control and space births has risen faster than the rate of contraceptive use. Preventing maternal mortality and morbidity from abortion in countries where these remain high is a matte

This article reviews three new and emerging risk factors for stillbirth that may be modifiable or might identify a compromised fetus. We focus on fetal movements, maternal sleep, and maternal diet. Recent studies have suggested than a sudden increase in vigorous fetal activity may be associated with increased risk of stillbirth. We review the papers that have reported this finding and discuss the implications as well as potential future directions for research. There is emerging literature to suggest that maternal sleep position may be a risk for stillbirth, especially if the woman settles to

Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is characterized by the development of systolic heart failure in the last month of pregnancy or within the first 5 months postpartum. The disease affects between 1:300 and 1:3000 births worldwide. Heart failure can resolve spontaneously but often does not. Mortality rates, like incidence, vary widely based on location, ranging from 0% to 25%. The consequences of PPCM are thus often devastating for an otherwise healthy young woman and her newborn. The cause of PPCM remains elusive. Numerous hypotheses have been proposed, with mixed supporting evidence. Recent wo

The statistics related to pregnancy and its outcomes are staggering: annually, an estimated 250000-280000 women die during childbirth. Unfortunately, a large number of women receive little or no care during or before pregnancy. At a period of critical vulnerability, interventions can be effectively delivered to improve the health of women and their newborns and also to make their pregnancy safe. This paper reviews the interventions that are most effective during preconception and pregnancy period and synergistically improve maternal and neonatal outcomes. Among pre-pregnancy interventions, fam

We describe the clinical course and autopsy findings of a female fetus with hydrops fetalis due to a huge pericardial rhabdomyoma. Fetal echocardiography at 21 weeks gestation demonstrated a huge tumor in the left ventricle. The fetus died of hydrops fetalis due to cardiac dysfunction at 24 weeks gestation. Autopsy demonstrated that the tumor protruded from the epicardial region of the apex into the pericardial cavity and induced a hypoplastic left ventricle and lung. Microscopically, the cardiac tumor showed characteristics of rhabdomyoma. This localization of cardiac rhabdomyoma is rare, but
