Use of third molar transplantation for closure of the oroantral communication after tooth extraction: a report of 2 cases.

OBJECTIVE: This clinical report introduces a promising and unique method for the immediate closure of the oroantral communication (OAC) after tooth extraction: the use of the transplanted third molar with closed apices. STUDY DESIGN: In 2 adult patients, OAC caused by the extraction of an upper molar was immediately closed by using a transplanted third molar with complete root formation. After tooth extraction at the recipient site, OAC with perforated mucosa of the sinus floor was confirmed and the donor third molar was transferred to the prepared recipient socket. Endodontic therapy of the

[Resection of malignant tumors involving the anterior cranial fossa].

BACKGROUND: The craniofacial approach has greatly facilitated resections of tumours involving the base of the anterior cranial fossa when compared to either the transcranial or transfacial approach alone. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This approach was used in 11 patients with malignant tumours localized to the ethmoid sinus, orbit and bone or soft tissue of the base of the anterior part of the skull. By combining a low frontal or frontolateral craniotomy with resection of the facial skull, en bloc resections were accomplished. A frontogaleal periostal flap or a muscle flap from the temporal muscle w

Surgical management of nasopharyngeal angio-fibroma.

Seventy cases of nasopharyngeal angio-fibroma are reported. Most of the patients were young adolescents between 13-24 years of age. 91% were males. The main symptoms were nose blockage and nasal bleeding, the latter was present in all the patients but the amount of blood varied from a few milliliters a time to a few hundreds of milliliters. Although angio-fibroma is benign, it invades the surrounding structures, especially the sphenoidal sinus, maxillary sinus and the ethmoidal sinuses, by expansion or by erosion. In 1/7th of the cases he palate is pushed downwards or bulges. Surgery may be th

Rare giant maxillay mucocele: A rare case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Mucocele is a slow growing, benign but locally aggressive cystic structure lined by true epithelium. It often results due to obstructed sinus outflow or obstruction of gland-like mucous retention cyst. It can cause bony destruction and might result in orbital symptoms like diplopia, orbital displacement, visual disturbances. Other clinical features are facial numbness, dental problems, etc. Radiological evaluation is the preferred diagnostic modality. Surgical removal is the treatment of choice both endoscopic and open (could well luc) approach or combined approach are preferred.

Synthetic, pure-phase beta-tricalcium phosphate ceramic granules (Cerasorb) for bone regeneration in the reconstructive surgery of the jaws.

The aim of this study was to investigate the long-term effect of the ceramic beta-tricalcium phosphate (beta-TCP) at different sites of alveolar reconstruction and to evaluate its properties. From 1997 to 2002, beta-TCP was implanted as bone substitute in 152 patients using a standardized study protocol. Main indications were the filling of large mandibular cysts (n=52), secondary and tertiary alveolar cleft grafting (n=38), periodontal defects (n=24) and maxillary sinus floor augmentation (n=16). For defects exceeding 2cm in diameter, beta-TCP was combined with autologous bone taken from the

[A case of Wegener's granulomatosis which showed early spontaneous remission].

An 80-year-old woman presented at our hospital on October 1995 with fever, hemoptysis and a cavitary shadow on chest X-ray. Blood examination revealed an accelerated erythrocyte sedimentation ratio and elevated CRP. Pulmonary cryptococcosis was suspected, but serological tests and bronchoscopic examination for cryptococcus were both negative. There was also no evidence of the tuberculosis or malignancy. She was treated with the antibiotic cefpirome sulfate intravenously for thirteen days. Her chest X-ray and abnormal blood test findings became almost completely normal following the i.v. antibi

Microsurgical Intervention for Dens Invaginatus in an Immature Tooth: A Case Report With Long-Term Follow-Up.

Dens invaginatus (DI) is a rare dental anomaly characterized by the infolding of enamel and dentin into the pulp cavity during tooth development. This condition often leads to complex endodontic challenges, predisposing affected teeth to caries, pulp necrosis, and chronic periapical abscesses. This case report describes the successful management of a maxillary lateral incisor with Type II DI complicated by a chronic periapical abscess, using an endodontic microsurgical approach. A 10-year-old girl presented with a chief complaint of recurrent swelling in the maxillary left incisor area. Clinic

[Paranasal sinus mycetoma with orbital involvement in a patient with AIDS].

A patient with AIDS was hospitalized with a left-sided face swelling and protrusion of the bulbus. After cranial computed tomography and fine-needle aspiration biopsy of the fossa temporalis we diagnosed a mycetoma; localisation and histology made an aspergilloma most probable. Antimycotic therapy led to complete remission of the symptoms. Post mortem we only could culture Candida albicans out of the abscess cavity.

Efficacy of Bacterial Cellulose as a Carrier of BMP-2 for Bone Regeneration in a Rabbit Frontal Sinus Model.

If the alveolar bone height of patients requiring dental implants in the maxillary molar region is inadequate, it is difficult to achieve satisfactory outcomes using existing bone graft materials. We previously reported the possible utility of bacterial cellulose (BC) as a new dental treatment material. BC has a high absorptive capacity, good mechanical strength, and good volume retention. BC loaded with bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) might allow effective alveolar bone augmentation. We created critical frontal bone defect models in 12 male Japanese white rabbits and divided them into fo

Landmarks for rapid localization of the sphenopalatine foramen: A radiographic morphometric analysis.

BACKGROUND: Transnasal endoscopic sphenopalatine artery ligation is becoming the procedure of choice for surgical management of intractable posterior epistaxis. Landmarks for localization of the sphenopalatine foramen can assist in rapid surgical exposure of the sphenopalatine artery. OBJECTIVE: This study examined distances from easily identified endoscopic surgical landmarks to the sphenopalatine foramen. METHODS: By using computed tomography of the sinus to study radiologic anatomy in 50 adults, distances were measured between five simple endoscopic landmarks and the sphenopalatine forame

AI-Driven CBCT Analysis for Surgical Decision-Making and Mucosal Damage Prediction in Sinus Lift Surgery for patients with low RBH.

BACKGROUND: Decision-making for maxillary sinus floor elevation (MSFE) surgery in patients with low residual bone height (<4 mm) presents significant challenges, particularly in selecting surgical approaches and predicting intraoperative mucosal perforation. Traditional methods rely heavily on physician experience, lack standardization and objectivity, and often fail to meet the demands of precision medicine. This study aims to build an intelligent decision-making system based on deep learning to optimize surgical selection and predict the risk of mucosal perforation, providing clinicians with

Guided implant surgery and sinus lift in severely resorbed maxillae: A retrospective clinical study with up to 10 years of follow-up.

OBJECTIVES: In the posterior maxilla, due to the presence of maxillary sinus, residual bone height lower than 3mm is a critical factor that can affect implant stability and survival. The use of guided surgery may facilitate the surgical procedures and the implant insertion in case of severely resorbed maxillae. Moreover, it may have beneficial effects on the long-term survival and success of implant-supported restorations. This study aimed to evaluate implant supported restorations on severely resorbed maxilla (<3 mm) after sinus lift with collagenated xenograft and guided surgery. METHODS: F

Study of factors influencing preoperative detection of alveolar antral artery by CBCT in sinus floor elevation.

This study aimed at assessing the prevalence of alveolar antral artery (AAA) detection by CBCT, its related variables, and at describing explanatory models useful in surgical planning, by retrospective evaluation of CBCT explorations. The modelling of the probability for detecting AAA was undertaken using logistic generalized additive models (GAM). The capacity for discriminating detection/no detection was assessed by receiver operating characteristic curves. A total of 466 sinuses were studied. Univariate models showed detection probability was linked to sinus width and thickness of the later
