Human amniotic membrane as a dural substitute in neurosurgery: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have highlighted the use of human amniotic membrane (HAM) in neurosurgical procedures as an effective dural substitute. HAM has inherent antifibrotic and anti-inflammatory properties and exhibits immunomodulatory effect that makes it an ideal dural substitute. Other advantages including easy availability, low cost of procurement, and storage also render it a promising dural substitute especially in low- and middle-income countries. METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed using PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases, using the search terms "human

Netrin G1 Is a Novel Target Antigen in Primary Membranous Nephropathy.

BACKGROUND: Primary membranous nephropathy (MN) is caused by circulating autoantibodies binding to antigens on the podocyte surface. PLA2R1 is the main target antigen in 70%-80% of cases, but the pathogenesis is unresolved in 10%-15% of patients. METHODS: We used native western blotting to identify IgG4 autoantibodies, which bind an antigen endogenously expressed on podocyte membranes, in the serum of the index patient with MN. These IgG4 autoantibodies were used to immunoprecipitate the target antigen, and mass spectrometry was used to identify Netrin G1 (NTNG1). Using native western blot an

Electrochemical iron production to enhance anaerobic membrane treatment of wastewater.

Although iron salts such as iron(III) chloride (FeCl3) have widespread application in wastewater treatment, safety concerns limit their use, due to the corrosive nature of concentrated solutions. This study demonstrates that local, electrochemical generation of iron is a viable alternative to the use of iron salts. Three laboratory systems with anaerobic membrane processes were set up to treat real wastewater; two systems used the production of either in-situ or ex-situ electrochemical iron (as Fe2+ and Fe2+(Fe3+)2O4, respectively), while the other system served as a control. These systems wer

The Role of Synovial Membrane in the Development of a Potential In Vitro Model of Osteoarthritis.

There is a lack of in vitro models able to plausibly represent the inflammation microenvironment of knee osteoarthritis (OA). We analyzed the molecules released from OA tissues (synovial membrane, cartilage, infrapatellar fat pad) and investigated whether the stimulation of human synovial fibroblasts (SFs), with synthetic cytokines (IL-1β and TNF-α or IFN-γ) or conditioned media (CM) from OA tissues, influence the SFs' response, in the sense of pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, growth factors, and degradative enzymes modulation. Human SFs were obtained from OA synovial membranes. SFs and

[Congenital hemolytic anemias due to erythrocyte membrane and enzyme defects].

Erythrocyte membrane and enzyme defects are the most common cause of congenital hemolytic anemias in the Central European population. Diagnostics include erythrocyte morphology, special biochemical tests such as osmotic fragility (AGLT) and EMA. For enzymopenic hemolytic anemias, cost-effective biochemical analysis remains the gold standard, supplemented by molecular genetic diagnostics when appropriate. Therapeutically, near complete splenectomy reduces hemolysis significantly for spherocytosis. The residual spleen at least provides a considerable phagocytic function and better response to im

Restructured membrane contacts rewire organelles for human cytomegalovirus infection.

Membrane contact sites (MCSs) link organelles to coordinate cellular functions across space and time. Although viruses remodel organelles for their replication cycles, MCSs remain largely unexplored during infections. Here, we design a targeted proteomics platform for measuring MCS proteins at all organelles simultaneously and define functional virus-driven MCS alterations by the ancient beta-herpesvirus human cytomegalovirus (HCMV). Integration with super-resolution microscopy and comparisons to herpes simplex virus (HSV-1), Influenza A, and beta-coronavirus HCoV-OC43 infections reveals time-

Phospholipid flippases and Sfk1 are essential for the retention of ergosterol in the plasma membrane.

Sterols are important lipid components of the plasma membrane (PM) in eukaryotic cells, but it is unknown how the PM retains sterols at a high concentration. Phospholipids are asymmetrically distributed in the PM, and phospholipid flippases play an important role in generating this phospholipid asymmetry. Here, we provide evidence that phospholipid flippases are essential for retaining ergosterol in the PM of yeast. A mutant in three flippases, Dnf1-Lem3, Dnf2-Lem3, and Dnf3-Crf1, and a membrane protein, Sfk1, showed a severe growth defect. We recently identified Sfk1 as a PM protein involved
