Elbow joint fatigue and bench-press training.

CONTEXT: Bench-press exercises are among the most common form of training exercise for the upper extremity because they yield a notable improvement in both muscle strength and muscle endurance. The literature contains various investigations into the effects of different bench-press positions on the degree of muscle activation. However, the effects of fatigue on the muscular performance and kinetics of the elbow joint are not understood fully. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of fatigue on the kinetics and myodynamic performance of the elbow joint in bench-press training. DESIGN: Control

Evaluation of the different forces brought into play during tube foot activities in sea stars.

Sea star tube feet consist of an enlarged and flattened distal extremity (the disc), which makes contact with the substratum, and a proximal contractile cylinder (the stem), which acts as a tether. In this study, the different forces brought into play during tube foot functioning were investigated in two related species. The tube feet of Asterias rubens and Marthasterias glacialis attach to glass with a similar mean tenacity (0.24 and 0.43 MPa, respectively), corresponding to an estimated maximal attachment force of 0.15 and 0.35 N. The contraction force of their retractor muscle averages 0.01

Effects of S-pindolol in mouse pancreatic and lung cancer cachexia models.

BACKGROUND: It is known that S-pindolol attenuates muscle loss in animal models of cancer cachexia and sarcopenia. In cancer cachexia, it also significantly reduced mortality and improved cardiac function, which is strongly compromised in cachectic animals. METHODS: Here, we tested 3 mg/kg/day of S-pindolol in two murine cancer cachexia models: pancreatic cancer cachexia (KPC) and Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC). RESULTS: Treatment of mice with 3 mg/kg/day of S-pindolol in KPC or LLC cancer cachexia models significantly attenuated the loss of body weight, including lean mass and muscle weights, l

Amelioration of inflammatory myopathies by glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist via suppressing muscle fibre necroptosis.

BACKGROUND: As glucocorticoids induce muscle atrophy during the treatment course of polymyositis (PM), novel therapeutic strategy is awaited that suppresses muscle inflammation but retains muscle strength. We recently found that injured muscle fibres in PM undergo FASLG-mediated necroptosis, a form of regulated cell death accompanied by release of pro-inflammatory mediators, contributes to accelerate muscle inflammation and muscle weakness. Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R) agonists have pleiotropic actions including anti-inflammatory effects, prevention of muscle atrophy, and inhibiti

Manual Muscle Testing of the Scapula and the Upper Limb through Bedside Examination.

Neurological examination is an important tool in diagnosing patients with neurological and neurosurgical conditions. As the complexity and knowledge of neurological and neurosurgical conditions increases, we are now required to learn and indoctrinate our peers and students with the correct skills and methods of examination. Emphasis on the correct techniques of testing muscle strength is essential to avoid errors in recording muscle power and in testing specific muscles which may have overlapping functions. The manual muscle testing of muscles of scapula and upper limbs was performed as to mim

Muscle MRI in adult-onset acid maltase deficiency.

We report the spectrum of muscle involvement on magnetic resonance imaging in 11 patients with a molecularly confirmed diagnosis of adult-onset acid maltase deficiency at different clinical stages. Muscle magnetic resonance imaging showed a selective progressive pattern of muscle involvement with a constant involvement of the adductor magnus and semimembranosus at the early stage of the disease and a later fatty infiltration of the long head of the biceps femoris, semitendinosus and of the anterior thigh muscles. In the advanced phases a selective sparing of sartorius, rectus, and gracilis mus

Development of a Konjac-Based Surgical Training Model Exhibiting Energy Device Applicability and Tactile Similarity to Animal Tissue.

INTRODUCTION: The use of simulation models in surgical training allows trainees to improve their in-hospital performance. While there are many types of models to simulate human tissue, including animal meat, polyvinyl alcohol, and silicon, each faces some challenges in terms of preservability and energy device applicability. We propose that konjac glucomannan (KGM) is a realistic alternative that can provide trainees with a texture closely resembling that of human tissue. This study was undertaken to describe the similarities between KGM gel and animal meat, as well as to investigate the effec

Eccentric exercise 24 h prior to hypobaric decompression increases decompression strain.

PURPOSE: Animal studies have shown that recent musculoskeletal injuries increase the risk of decompression sickness (DCS). However, to date no similar experimental study has been performed in humans. The aim was to investigate if exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD)-as provoked by eccentric work and characterized by reduced strength and delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS)-leads to increased formation of venous gas emboli (VGE) during subsequent hypobaric exposure. METHODS: Each subject (n = 13) was on two occasions exposed to a simulated altitude of 24,000 ft for 90 min, whilst breathing ox

The effects of ciliary neurotrophic factor on motor dysfunction in wobbler mouse motor neuron disease.

Ciliary neurotrophic factor is the first neurotrophic factor to show survival-promoting effects in developing motor neurons in vitro, in ovo, and in vivo. In the present study we tested the effects of recombinant rat or human ciliary neurotrophic factor in the wobbler mouse model of motor neuron disease. Mice received 1 mg/kg of the factor or a vehicle solution subcutaneously three times a week for 4 weeks, after the disease was diagnosed between the ages of 3 and 4 weeks. Although treatment with rat ciliary neurotrophic factor (n = 6) resulted in delayed weight gain (p < 0.001), grip strength

Pathophysiological mechanisms leading to muscle loss in chronic kidney disease.

Loss of muscle proteins is a deleterious consequence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) that causes a decrease in muscle strength and function, and can lead to a reduction in quality of life and increased risk of morbidity and mortality. The effectiveness of current treatment strategies in preventing or reversing muscle protein losses is limited. The limitations largely stem from the systemic nature of diseases such as CKD, which stimulate skeletal muscle protein degradation pathways while simultaneously activating mechanisms that impair muscle protein synthesis and repair. Stimuli that initiate

Preventive Effect of Standardized Lespedeza cuneata Extract on Dexamethasone-Induced Muscle Atrophy in C57BL/6N Mice.

Muscle atrophy, characterized by a decline in muscle mass and function, results from an imbalance between protein synthesis and degradation. This study explored the effects of standardized Lespedeza cuneata extract (LCE) on dexamethasone (DEX)-induced muscle atrophy. The mice were orally administered LCE for 17 days. Starting on day 7 of oral administration, DEX was intraperitoneally injected into mice daily for 10 days to induce muscle atrophy. LCE treatment significantly improved grip strength by 22.27% and 33.16% and increased muscle volume by 17.47% and 23.00% at doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg
