The sarcomere is the basic contractile unit of muscle fibers, bordered by Z-discs. In Drosophila, Z-disc structure and maintenance rely on actinin, and the Z-band alternatively spliced PDZ-motif protein 52 (Zasp52), a member of the Alp/Enigma family. Zasp52 has been shown to bind actin, actinin, and itself, but its full range of functions remains unclear, as a null mutant has not been previously analyzed. To address this, we generated a CRISPR-based null mutant of Zasp52, deleting most of the ∼50 kb locus. Null mutants are viable but flightless and display severe defects in indirect flight mus

BACKGROUND: Feedforward activation of trunk muscles is crucial for spinal control and can be quantified by assessing anticipatory postural adjustments (APA). Few studies have examined time-dependent changes in APA onset times across the low back pain (LBP) continuum and their association with psychological factors.
OBJECTIVES: 1) Investigate variations in APA onset times along the LBP continuum; 2) identify participant clusters based on APA onset timing patterns across trunk muscles; 3) compare these clusters on psychological factors.
METHOD: This cross-sectional study assessed APA onset tim

BACKGROUND: Following ankle fracture surgery, the ankle joint is typically immobilized using a splint. This immobilization often results in a restricted range of motion (ROM), particularly in dorsiflexion (DF), upon removal of the fixation. Local vibration therapy applied to the exposed plantar flexor muscles may help mitigate ROM limitations.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate whether a 3-min daily local vibration intervention applied during splint immobilization could improve ankle joint ROM after fixation removal in postoperative ankle fracture patients.
STUDY DESIGN: This study is a h

OBJECTIVE: While paraspinal muscle degeneration is closely linked to lumbar disc herniation (LDH), the relationship between radicular compression and paraspinal muscle degeneration remains controversial, and evidence regarding the effect of percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy (PELD) on paraspinal muscle degeneration is limited. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between radicular compression and paraspinal muscle degeneration in LDH patients and to evaluate postoperative changes in paraspinal muscles following PELD.
METHODS: A total of 185 patients with single-level L4-5 LD

Botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) chemodenervation is commonly used for facial synkinesis and aesthetic indications, but landmark-based techniques are limited by anatomical variability and risk of off-target delivery. High-resolution ultrasound (US) can be used to enhance precision and safety. This systematic review explores the role of US-guided BoNT-A facial chemodenervation in evaluating anatomical accuracy, clinical efficacy, complications, and patient satisfaction. A comprehensive search of 6 databases through April 2025 identified studies assessing US-guided BoNT-A chemodenervation for fac

BACKGROUND/AIM: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a tumor predisposition syndrome characterized by neoplasms originating from nerve sheath cells. The autosomal dominant hereditary disease also affects numerous developmental and metabolic processes, for example in the bones. The aim of the study was to document the diagnosis and treatment of an NF1 patient who had developed a space-occupying lesion at the base of the skull with noticeable mandibular changes.
CASE REPORT: The patient, who presented for her initial examination as a teenager, had an asymmetrical lower face. The deformation of the

The vestibulospinal and reticulospinal tracts play a crucial role in controlling lumbar erector spinae (LES). Electrical vestibular stimulation (EVS) can be used to investigate the contribution of the vestibular system in the control of a muscle during a motor task. A recent study observed a minimal contribution of the corticospinal projection to LES in a voluntary spine extension. We thus hypothesised a greater involvement of alternative pathways originating in the brainstem such as vestibulo- and reticulospinal tracts in the control of LES for this task. This study investigates the impact of

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with pronounced abdominal muscle impairment often struggle to perform conventional abdominal strengthening exercises, particularly during the initial phases of rehabilitation. Identifying alternative exercise positions that minimize these challenges while maintaining adequate muscular engagement is essential for effective training and clinical practice. This study aimed to compare the EMG activity of the abdominal and shoulder extensors muscles during traditional curl-ups, modified curl-ups, and roll-ups with balls.
METHOD: Forty healthy participants (20 male, 20 fem

The extraocular muscles are integral to voluntary and reflexive eye movements, enabling precise gaze control through the coordinated action of six muscles. Variants in extraocular muscle anatomy, though rare, may contribute to disorders of ocular movement. We report a case of a 20-year-old female presenting with recurrent painful ophthalmoplegic neuropathy found to possess a rare anomalous muscular band between the superior and inferior rectus muscles identified on magnetic resonance imaging of the orbits. This report seeks to expand the limited literature on anomalous bands of the orbit by pr

BACKGROUND: Intensive care unit-acquired weakness (ICU-Aw) is a prevalent complication in critically ill patients, affecting both limb and respiratory muscles, individually or concurrently. The precise mechanisms by which muscle weakness influences the distinct functional roles of each muscle group remain to be fully elucidated. The objective of this study was to compare the time course evolution of inspiratory and quadriceps muscles strength during repeated maximal isometric contractions in patients with limb muscles and inspiratory muscles weakness.
METHODS: A single-center, observational s

Voluntary stretching of upper back and shoulder muscles is often associated with a sense of well-being of unknown cause. The goal of this study was to examine the impact of shoulder/upper back stretching on heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP) responses in healthy individuals. Twenty-four healthy individuals underwent continuous beat-to-beat HR and BP monitoring during active standing (AS) and during shoulder/upper back extension stretching. Measurements were compared using appropriate statistical tests. With AS, HR increased (median 24 bpm) and systolic BP decreased (median - 28 mmHg). Sho

Spasticity of the distal lower limb substantially impairs stance, gait, and quality of life in patients with upper motor neuron lesions. Although ultrasound-guided botulinum toxin A (BoNT-A) injections are increasingly employed, structured, muscle-specific visual guidance for the distal lower limb remains limited. This study provides a comprehensive guide for ultrasound-guided BoNT-A injections across ten key distal lower limb muscles: gastrocnemius, soleus, tibialis posterior, flexor hallucis longus, flexor digitorum longus, tibialis anterior, extensor hallucis longus, flexor digitorum brevis
