Consistency of reward responses in neutral and anxious states in adolescent females with anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a difficult-to-treat psychiatric disorder that typically onsets in adolescence. AN is marked by atypical reward responsiveness and elevated anxiety. However, the neural dynamics of reward responsivity, and how this is impacted by being in an anxious state, are unknown in AN. To test this, we conducted a novel fMRI task consisting of a monetary reward following anxiety provocation or a neutral condition. METHODS: Forty-seven adolescent participants (25 females with partially or fully weight restored AN, post treatment and 22 mildly anxious controls) were pr

Cognitive Functioning in Females with Endometriosis-Associated Chronic Pelvic Pain: A Literature Review.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive complaints are commonplace among women living with endometriosis-associated chronic pelvic pain (CPP); yet, surprisingly few studies have assessed their cognitive functioning. As an initial step to address the resulting knowledge gap, this review aimed to synthesize the current literature reporting on cognition in females with endometriosis-associated CPP, and due to the poverty of endometriosis studies, to draw on data from female cohorts with other chronic pain conditions to gain potentially relevant insights. METHODS: Three database searches were conducted (Scopus, Pub

Variable Innervation of the Triceps Brachii: Anatomical and Clinical Perspectives in a Narrative Review.

Traditional anatomical texts describe the triceps brachii as receiving motor innervation exclusively from branches of the radial nerve. However, growing morphological, electrophysiological, and clinical evidence demonstrates notable variability in its neural supply, particularly to the long and medial heads of the muscle. To clarify these inconsistencies, a narrative review was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar with search terms related to triceps innervation and nerve variations. After screening 930 records, 27 studies met the inclusion criteria. The articles were reviewed an

Comparative analysis of convolutional neural network models for the histopathological differentiation of acinic cell carcinoma and secretory carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: Although artificial intelligence tools show promise for enhancing the diagnosis of head and neck lesions, few studies have tested these resources for the microscopic diagnosis of salivary gland tumors. Specifically, the microscopic differentiation between acinic cell carcinoma and secretory carcinoma has never been addressed in this context. Therefore, this exploratory study aimed to comparatively evaluate the feasibility of applying convolutional neural networks for the microscopic differentiation between acinic cell carcinomas and secretory carcinomas. METHODS: A cross-sectional

Downmodulation of Potassium Conductances Induces Epileptic Seizures in Cortical Network Models Via Multiple Synergistic Factors.

Voltage-gated potassium conductances g K play a critical role not only in normal neural function, but also in many neurological disorders and related therapeutic interventions. In particular, in an important animal model of epileptic seizures, 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) administration is thought to induce seizures by reducing g K in cortex and other brain areas. Interestingly, 4-AP has also been useful in the treatment of neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injury, where it is thought to improve action potential propagation in axonal fibers. Here, we examined g K down

How does the electric field induced by tDCS influence motor-related connectivity? Model-guided perspectives.

Over the last decade, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been applied not only to modulate local cortical activation, but also to address communication between functionally-related brain areas. Stimulation protocols based on simple two-electrode placements are being replaced by multi-electrode montages to target intra- and inter-hemispheric neural networks using multichannel/high definition paradigms.Objective. This study aims to investigate the characteristics of electric field (EF) patterns originated by tDCS experiments addressing changes in functional brain connectivity.Met

rTMS for Co-occurring Psychiatric and Substance Use Disorders: Narrative Review and Future Directions.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Co-occurring substance use disorders (SUDs) are highly common in individuals with psychiatric illnesses. Individuals with comorbid psychiatric illness and SUDs may experience poorer mental health and decreased treatment efficacy. However, there are no FDA-approved treatments for co-occurring substance use and psychiatric disorders. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), a form of non-invasive brain stimulation that uses an electromagnetic field to change brain activity and behavior, may be a promising treatment for co-occurring disorders. Potentiation of Motor Adaptation Via Cerebellar tACS: Characterization of the Stimulation Frequency.

Motor adaptation is critical to update motor tasks in new or modified environmental conditions. While the cerebellum supports error-based adaptations, its neural implementation is partially known. By controlling the frequency of cerebellar transcranial alternating current stimulation (c-tACS), we can test the influence of neural oscillation from the cerebellum for motor adaptation. Two independent experiments were conducted. In Experiment 1, 16 participants received four c-tACS protocols (45 Hz, 50 Hz, 55 Hz, and sham) on four different days while they practiced a visuomotor adaptation task (3

A systematic review of structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging studies on the neurobiology of depressive symptoms in schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

Depressive symptoms in Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders (SSDs) negatively impact suicidality, prognosis, and quality of life. Despite this, efficacious treatments are limited, largely because the neural mechanisms underlying depressive symptoms in SSDs remain poorly understood. We conducted a systematic review to provide an overview of studies that investigated the neural correlates of depressive symptoms in SSDs using neuroimaging techniques. We searched MEDLINE, PsycINFO, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases from inception through June 19, 2023. Specifically, we focused on

Modulation of High-Frequency rTMS on Reward Circuitry in Individuals with Nicotine Dependence: A Preliminary fMRI Study.

Although previous studies have shown that repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) can ameliorate addictive behaviors and cravings, the underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effect of high-frequency rTMS with the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (L-DLPFC) as a target region on smoking addiction in nicotine-dependent individuals by detecting the change of spontaneous brain activity in the reward circuitry. We recruited 17 nicotine-dependence participants, who completed 10 sessions of 10 Hz rTMS over a 2-week period and underwent evaluatio

Predicted risk factors associated with secondary infertility in women: univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses.

INTRODUCTION: Infertile women are those who regularly engage in unprotected intercourse for a period of at least 1 year and are unable to become clinically pregnant. Primary infertility means the inability of couples to conceive, without any previous successful pregnancies. Secondary Infertility refers to the inability to get pregnant for 12 months, after having a previous pregnancy for one time at least. The objectives of the current study were to analyze risk factors for secondary infertility and compare the predictive accuracy of artificial neural network (ANN) and multiple logistic regress

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation on Individualized Spots Based on Task functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Improves Swallowing Function in Poststroke Dysphagia.

Background: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has not previously been used to localize the swallowing functional area in repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) treatment for poststroke dysphagia; Traditionally, the target area for rTMS is the hotspot, which is defined as the specific region of the brain identified as the optimal location for transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). This study aims to compare the network differences between the TMS hotspot and the saliva swallowing fMRI activation to determine the better rTMS treatment site and investigate changes in fun

Involvement of Pre-limbic Cortex-Nucleus accumbens projections in Context-Induced alcohol seeking.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) remains a critical public health issue worldwide, characterized by high relapse rates often triggered by contextual cues. This research investigates the neural mechanisms behind context-induced reinstatement of alcohol-seeking behavior, focusing on the nucleus accumbens and its interactions with the prelimbic cortex, employing Male Long-Evans rats in an ABA renewal model. In our experimental setup, rats were trained to self-administer 10 % ethanol in Context A, followed by extinction of lever pressing in the presence of discrete cues in Context B. The context-induced
