Self-organizing maps can determine outcome and match recipients and donors at orthotopic liver transplantation.

BACKGROUND: There is a relative lack of donor organs for liver transplantation. Ideally, to maximize the utility of those livers that are offered, donor and recipient characteristics should be matched to ensure the best possible posttransplant survival of the recipient. METHODS: With prospectively collected data on 827 patients receiving a primary liver graft for chronic liver disease, we used a self-organizing map (SOM) (one form of a neural network) to predict outcome after transplantation using both donor and recipient factors. The SOM was then validated using a data set of 2622 patients u

Neural network and fuzzy control in FES-assisted locomotion for the hemiplegic.

This study is aimed at establishing a neural network and fuzzy feedback control FES system used for adjusting the optimum electrical stimulating current to control the motion of an ankle joint. The proposed method further improves the drop-foot problem existing in hemiplegia patients. The proposed system includes both hardware and software. The hardware system determines the patient's ankle joint angle using a position sensor located in the patient's affected side. This sensor stimulates the tibialis anterior with an electrical stimulator that induces the dorsiflexion action and achieves the i

Classification and diagnostic prediction of cancers using gene expression profiling and artificial neural networks.

The purpose of this study was to develop a method of classifying cancers to specific diagnostic categories based on their gene expression signatures using artificial neural networks (ANNs). We trained the ANNs using the small, round blue-cell tumors (SRBCTs) as a model. These cancers belong to four distinct diagnostic categories and often present diagnostic dilemmas in clinical practice. The ANNs correctly classified all samples and identified the genes most relevant to the classification. Expression of several of these genes has been reported in SRBCTs, but most have not been associated with

Supervised deep learning with gene functional annotation for cell classification.

Gene-by-gene differential expression analysis is a widely used supervised approach for interpreting single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) data. However, modern scRNA-seq datasets often contain large numbers of cells, leading to the identification of many differentially expressed genes with extremely small p-values but negligible effect sizes, thus making biological interpretation difficult. To overcome this challenge, we developed Supervised Deep learning with gene functional ANnotation (SDAN), a method that integrates gene functional annotation information (e.g., protein-protein interaction)

A Novel Approach for the Early Identification of Genetic Risk Factors for Alzheimer's Disease Using EEG and Psychometric Data.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder associated with impairments in memory and executive functions. Despite significant advancements in identifying genetic risk factors, the high cost and limited accessibility of genetic testing remain major barriers. In this work, we propose a cost-effective screening approach that leverages EEG recordings and psychometric test scores to predict an individual's genetic risk for AD. Our Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model shows promising performance: it achieved an F1 score of 72.21% in distinguishing APOE-$\varepsilon$4/PI

Development and internal validation of a prescriptive multi-task learning model for horizontal strabismus surgery planning.

BACKGROUND & AIM: Horizontal strabismus affects ≈ 1.9% of the global population. Traditional “1 mm ≈ 2 Δ” nomograms disregard patient heterogeneity, leaving re-operation rates at 7–8% even after primary horizontal surgery. We aimed to develop a single prescriptive model that simultaneously predicts which horizontal extra-ocular muscles require surgery and the precise recession/resection dose for each, following the TRIPOD + AI reporting checklist. METHODS: In this retrospective single-centre study, 634 consecutive patients (2019–2024) undergoing primary horizontal-muscle surgery were analysed.

Toddlers' Active Gaze Behavior Supports Self-Supervised Object Learning.

Toddlers learn to recognize objects from different viewpoints with almost no supervision. During this learning, they execute frequent eye and head movements that shape their visual experience. It is presently unclear if and how these behaviors contribute to toddlers' emerging object recognition abilities. To answer this question, we here combine head-mounted eye tracking during dyadic play with unsupervised machine learning. We approximate toddlers' central visual field experience by cropping image regions from a head-mounted camera centered on the current gaze location estimated via eye track

Deep learning based on multiparametric MRI for differentiating benign from malignant PI-RADS 3 prostate lesions: a dual-center study.

To address the diagnostic challenge of indeterminate PI-RADS 3 prostate lesions, we developed a non-invasive deep learning radiomics model using multiparametric MRI. This dual-center retrospective study included 382 patients. Lesions on T2WI, DWI, and ADC were segmented and standardized. Deep learning features were extracted via ResNet101, and radiomics features were selected using minimum Redundancy Maximum Relevance (mRMR) and Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO). We built and compared three models: clinical, deep-learning radiomics signature (DLRS), and a combined model.

Simultaneous Recognition of Finger Flexion, Angle, and Force Based on a Wearable High-Density Neuromuscular Interface for Real-Time Anthropomorphic Prosthetics Control.

In the field of prosthetics hand control, finger movements offer greater dexterity and operation precision than conventional hand gesture and wrist gesture, enabling fine-grained human-computer interaction tasks, such as traditional Chinese medicine sphygmopalpation and laboratory hazardous reagent operation. These tasks involve finger flexion, flexion angle and fingertip force. However, few studies have simultaneously recognized these motion information, and applied them to real-time prosthetic hand control. In this paper, we present a wearable high-density surface electromyography (HD-sEMG)-

Decoding pan-cancer treatment outcomes using multimodal real-world data and explainable artificial intelligence.

Despite advances in precision oncology, clinical decision-making still relies on limited variables and expert knowledge. To address this limitation, we combined multimodal real-world data and explainable artificial intelligence (xAI) to introduce AI-derived (AID) markers for clinical decision support. We used xAI to decode the outcome of 15,726 patients across 38 solid cancer entities based on 350 markers, including clinical records, image-derived body compositions, and mutational tumor profiles. xAI determined the prognostic contribution of each clinical marker at the patient level and identi
