BACKGROUND: Vestibular schwannomas are known to harbor mutations in the neurofibromatosis type 2 tumor suppressor gene, but the mechanism of the neurofibromatosis type 2 tumor suppressor gene action is not well understood. Identification of genes differentially expressed in normal and diseased tissues through the use of a large-scale, cDNA microarray approach may lead to increased understanding of pathways that lead to tumor formation.
OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study were to evaluate the gene expression profiles in vestibular schwannomas in comparison with normal vestibular nerve tiss

Brief intense clicks cause short-latency cervical muscles microcontractions which are supposed to be of vestibular origin. Averaging these microcontractions allows myogenic vestibular evoked potentials (MVEP) to be obtained. MVEP from the trapezius muscles were investigated in normal subjects, cochleovestibular nerve-damaged patients and patients with a vestibular or a cochlear lesion. Muscular responses were recorded on right and left trapezius by averaging from surface electrodes following right and left monaural 100 dB hearing level click stimulation. In normal subjects, responses to monaur

PURPOSE: To report our preliminary results in the application of a turbo fluid-attenuated inversion-recovery (FLAIR) MR technique to the diagnosis of intracranial tumors and to assess the clinical usefulness of this technique.
METHODS: Thirty-four patients with various intracranial tumors were studies with MR imaging, including a turbo FLAIR sequence. FLAIR images were compared with images obtained with conventional spin-echo sequences.
RESULTS: Except for 2 lesions in 1 patients, tumor signal intensities on FLAIR images were consistent with those shown on T2-weighted spin-echo images. FLAIR

Neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2), a dominantly inherited disorder, typically manifests as bilateral vestibular schwannomas and predisposes to other nervous system tumors. In this study, we present a large pedigree with a benign course of NF2 (mild Gardner type) characterized by slowly growing vestibular schwannomas but few other manifestations. The family was thoroughly investigated with neurologic, ophthalmologic, and neuro-otologic methods including gadolinium-enhanced MRI of the head and spine and DNA linkage analysis. In the clinical analysis of 22 family members, MRI was superior to neuro-otolog

41 heterodigital neurovascular island flaps were used to cover defects of the tactile pad of the thumb in 17 years. With an average follow-up of 75.5 months, 30 patients were reviewed. 17 were treated by the original Littler technique and 13 were treated with the same flap reconstruction but with division of the digital nerve innervating the flap and re-anastomosis of this nerve to the proximal nerve end of the ulnar digital nerve of the thumb. Good aesthetic and functional results were achieved in both groups. Sensory acuity did not appear to decrease with time. The nerve reconnection techniq

We have characterized the specific binding of [3H]-phorbol-12,13-dibutyrate in the white and gray matter of normal human brain and in cerebral tumors as an index of the availability of protein kinase C enzyme molecules. White matter has less than 50% phorbol-ester-binding capacity in comparison to gray matter. The binding is lower in tumors of glial origin when compared with normal white matter. Tumors of nonglial origin such as neurinoma and meningioma have a lower binding capacity than glial tumors. Metastatic tissues have the lowest binding capacity. The analysis of binding parameters in tu

Like many other body structures, the mouth is often affected by disease that principally arises from, or targets, several tissue sites. Indeed, systemic disorders can manifest on the oral mucosa as the first, only, or become the most severe manifestation of a systemic disease and/or become the most significant factor to adversely affect an individual's quality of life. Oral healthcare providers (dentists, therapists and hygienists) may be the first to observe an abnormality in the mouth which sometimes indicates a significant systemic disease unknown to the patient or their general medical pra

Bone metastases represent a major cause of morbidity in advanced cancers, yet the neural regulation of metastatic growth within bone remains largely unexplored. The skeletal system is richly innervated by sensory and sympathetic nerve fibers that influence bone remodeling, hematopoiesis, and immune surveillance. Emerging evidence suggests that disseminated tumor cells exploit these neural circuits to create a growth-permissive microenvironment. Tumor-secreted neurotrophic factors can induce nerve sprouting, while sympathetic activation via β-adrenergic receptors promotes osteoclastogenesis, im

OBJECTIVE: Inflammation and angiogenesis may play a role in the growth of sporadic and neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2)-related vestibular schwannoma (VS). The similarities in microvascular and inflammatory microenvironment have not been investigated. The authors sought to compare the tumor microenvironment (TME) in sporadic and NF2-related VSs using a combined imaging and tissue analysis approach.
METHODS: Diffusion MRI and high-temporal-resolution dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) MRI data sets were prospectively acquired in 20 NF2-related and 24 size-matched sporadic VSs. Diffusion metrics (me

Vestibular schwannomas (VSs) are the most common tumours of the cerebellopontine angle. Ninety-five percent of people with VS present with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL); the mechanism of this SNHL is currently unknown. To establish the first model to study the role of VS-secreted factors in causing SNHL, murine cochlear explant cultures were treated with human tumour secretions from thirteen different unilateral, sporadic VSs of subjects demonstrating varied degrees of ipsilateral SNHL. The extent of cochlear explant damage due to secretion application roughly correlated with the subjects'

OBJECT: There are a variety of treatment options for the management of vestibular schwannomas (VSs), including microsurgical resection, radiotherapy, and observation. Although the choice of treatment is dependent on various patient factors, physician bias has been shown to significantly affect treatment choice for VS. In this study the authors describe the current epidemiology of VS and treatment trends in the US in the modern era. They also illustrate patient and tumor characteristics and elucidate their effect on tumor management.
METHODS: Patients diagnosed with VS were identified through

HYPOTHESIS: Hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1alpha, erythropoietin (Epo), Epo receptor (EpoR), and bcl-2 are expressed in both sporadic unilateral vestibular schwannomas (VSs) and those associated with neurofibromatosis Type 2, and the expression data correlate with clinicopathological tumor features including microvessel density and Ki-67-labeling index.
BACKGROUND: Erythropoietin expression is regulated by the transcription factor, HIF-1alpha. Erythropoietin signaling via EpoR results in stimulation of cell proliferation and elevated expression of the antiapoptotic protein, bcl-2, and then i
