Mental health dished up-the use of iPSC models in neuropsychiatric research.

Genetic and molecular mechanisms that play a causal role in mental illnesses are challenging to elucidate, particularly as there is a lack of relevant in vitro and in vivo models. However, the advent of induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) technology has provided researchers with a novel toolbox. We conducted a systematic review using the PRISMA statement. A PubMed and Web of Science online search was performed (studies published between 2006-2020) using the following search strategy: hiPSC OR iPSC OR iPS OR stem cells AND schizophrenia disorder OR personality disorder OR antisocial personalit

Temperament, personality, and the mood and anxiety disorders.

Literature on temperament, personality, and mood and anxiety disorders is reviewed. The review is organized primarily around L. A. Clark and D. Watson's (1991b) tripartite model for these disorders, but other influential approaches are also examined. Negative affectivity (or neuroticism) appears to be a vulnerability factor for the development of anxiety and depression, indicates poor prognosis, and is itself affected by the experience of disorder. Positive affectivity (or extraversion) is related more specifically to depression, may be a risk factor for its development, suggests poor prognosi

Cybernetics, activation, and drug effects.

Patients present unique combinations of familial relationships, developmental idiosyncrasies, social aberrations, affective states, cognitive abilities, symptoms, defects, and maladaptations. Psychopharmacological treatments form a useful approach to cutting through this complexity to the core pathophysiology. Focusing on disorders that can be brought to complete remission by medication suggests that retarded and agitated depressions, manic and angry hyperactive paranoid states, panic disorder, emotionally unstable character disorders and schizophrenias are governed by the degree of derangemen

Neural basis of successful DBS for OCD after failed capsulotomy.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by disturbing thoughts (obsessions) that initiate anxiety-reducing thoughts or behaviors (compulsions). For patients with treatment-resistant OCD (tr-OCD), neuromodulation techniques, like capsulotomy (a lesion in the anterior limb of the internal capsule) and deep brain stimulation (DBS), have emerged as interventions that likely regulate connectivity between the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and subcortical targets. Three patients (Cap-DBS1-3) underwent a failed capsulotomy followed by successful DBS. Here, we aimed to understand the

Assessing misophonia as a potential comorbidity in migraine patients compared to controls: a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and symptom severity of misophonia among individuals with migraine, and to explore its clinical and psychological correlates. BACKGROUND: Misophonia is a neurobehavioral condition characterized by intense emotional and physiological reactions to specific everyday sounds, such as chewing or tapping. Although misophonia has been associated with increased sensory sensitivity and psychiatric comorbidities, its relationship with other sensory processing disorders-particularly migraine-remains underexplored. METHODS: In this cross-sectional

Five-months-postoperative neuropsychological outcome from a pilot prospective randomized clinical trial of thalamic deep brain stimulation for Tourette syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neuropsychiatric disorder presenting with motor and/or sonic tics associated with frontostriatal dysfunction. This study provided pilot data of the neuropsychological safety of bilateral thalamic deep brain stimulation (DBS) to treat medication-refractory TS in adults. METHOD: This study used a repeated-measures design with pretest and 3-month follow-up from start of continuous bilateral DBS. Five male patients underwent DBS surgery for medically refractory TS. Repeated-measures ANOVA was used to evaluate for any change in neuropsychological test scores,

Emotional-type psychopathologic symptoms among patients with terminal chronic alcohol-induced liver cirrhosis.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with toxic substance abuse syndrome, such as alcohol abuse, have elevated psychopathologic morbidity and mortality such as mood disorders. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the emotional-type psychopathologic symptoms in patients with alcohol-induced hepatic cirrhosis on the liver transplant waiting list. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with alcoholic liver cirrhosis who were candidates for liver transplant (n = 41) completed the SA-45 questionnaire (González y Cuevas; 88), which assesses nine dimensions: somatizations, obsessive-compulsivity, interpersonal sensitivity, depressio

Identification and treatment of a pineal region tumor in an adolescent with prodromal psychotic symptoms.

An adolescent male patient originally presented to a prodromal clinical research program with severe obsessive-compulsive behaviors and subthreshold symptoms of psychosis, which eventually developed into first-rank psychotic symptoms. The patient was followed over a 2-year period. His symptoms did not respond to psychotherapy or pharmacotherapy. However, when a pineal region tumor was discovered and treated with chemotherapy and autologous stem cell rescue, both psychotic symptoms and psychosocial functioning reverted toward baseline. Although subcortical brain structures have been implicated

Feather picking and self-mutilation in psittacine birds.

Feather-picking and self-mutilation behaviors are common in psittacine birds. These behaviors are best defined as stereotypic behaviors or obsessive compulsive disorders. There is likely a genetic predisposition for these behaviors as reflected in the overrepresentation of a number of species of psittacines. Stereotypies most often result from a high level of arousal and the inability to respond with the appropriate natural behaviors. More specifically, conflict may be induced by the absence of releasing stimuli or target objects. On a chemical level, stereotypic behavior appears to be related

Cannabinoids: possible role in patho-physiology and therapy of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

High densities of cannabinoid receptors were found in the basal ganglia and hippocampus, indicating a putative functional role of cannabinoids in movement and behaviour. Anecdotal reports suggested beneficial effects of marijuana in Tourette's syndrome (TS). We therefore interviewed 64 TS patients with regard to use of marijuana and its influence on TS symptomatology. Of 17 patients (27%) who reported prior use of marijuana, 14 subjects (82%) experienced a reduction or complete remission of motor and vocal tics and an amelioration of premonitory urges and obsessive-compulsive symptoms. The phenomenology of ritualized and repeated behaviors in nonclinical populations in the United States.

The question of whether ritualized and repeated behaviors might be part of a person's "normal" repertoire, providing them with feelings of self-efficacy, is explored in a phenomenological study in which nonclinical subjects who engage in ritualized and repeated behaviors describe their behaviors, and reflect on their feelings before, during, and after engaging in these rituals. Results seem to support the hypothesis that engaging in these behaviors is perceived as reducing feelings of anxiety, fear, and discomfort, and increasing feelings of control and security. Subjects also report that they

Cortical GABA, striatal dopamine and midbrain serotonin as the key players in compulsive and anxiety disorders--results from in vivo imaging studies.

Various factors are discussed in the pathophysiology of anxiety disorders, including dysfunctions of the (DA)ergic, serotonin (5-HT)ergic and GABAergic system. We assessed the contribution of the individual synaptic constituents by subjecting all available in vivo imaging studies on patients with anxiety disorders to a retrospective analysis. On a total of 504 patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder (PD), phobia, or posttraumatic stress-disorder (PTSD) and 593 controls, investigations of VMAT2, DAT, SERT, D1, D2, 5-HTIA, 5-HT2A, GAB

Next-Generation Neuromodulation for Anxiety: Circuit-Based and Personalized Approaches.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We provide an update on the current psychiatric research for DBS and TMS and what the field has learned about causal circuitry implicated in anxiety and anxiety-related disorders. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent refinement of DBS and TMS techniques have both improved their safety and efficacy as anxiety treatments and elucidated the pathological circuitry and areas causally involved in psychiatric disease. Anxiety is a debilitating hallmark of many psychiatric disorders. A significant portion of patients do not achieve sufficient benefit from psychotherapy and medication, so other

Higher meal disengagement and meal presentation are uniquely related to psychological distress and lower quality of life in undergraduate students.

Objective: Picky eating, which occurs in emerging adulthood and is associated with psychological distress and quality of life, has historically been conceptualized as unidimensional despite research suggesting it is a multifaceted construct. Participants: An undergraduate sample (N = 509; Mage = 19.96). Methods: A cross-sectional survey assessed picky eating facets (food variety, meal disengagement, meal presentation, and taste aversion), disordered eating, anxiety, depression, stress, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and social phobia symptoms, and quality of life. Results: Meal disengage

Cariprazine for treating coprophagia and organic psychosis in a young woman with acquired brain injury.

Coprophagia or the ingestion of faeces has been associated with medical conditions (seizure disorders, cerebral atrophy and tumours) and psychiatric disorders (mental retardation, alcoholism, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, schizophrenia, fetishes, delirium and dementia). The case of a woman in her 30s presenting with coprophagia and psychotic symptoms following hypoxic brain injury is reported. The case is discussed and literature is reviewed. We investigate cariprazine, a relatively new atypical antipsychotic for treating coprophagia, associated with psychotic symptoms. Psychiatri

Escitalopram-induced epistaxis: A case report.

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are a group of drugs used to treat various psychiatric disorders such as major depression, generalised anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive syndrome. Although generally safe, SSRIs can lead to various adverse effects, including an increased risk of bleeding due to their effect on platelet activation and aggregation. Unexpected bleeding can occur at different sites, in people of different age groups, and in combination with other medications. The commonly reported risk factors associated with medication-induced bleeding in patients with mental disord

Comorbid Psychopathology and the Clinical Profile of Family Accommodation in Pediatric OCD.

Family accommodation (FA) has been linked with myriad negative outcomes in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), but extant literature has yielded differential relationships between FA and clinical variables of interest. Consequently, this study examined the phenomenology, clinical profile, and effects of comorbid psychopathology on FA to better understand these behaviors. A total of 150 youths and their caregivers completed clinician- and self-reported measures at a baseline visit for a larger randomized controlled trial. Sociodemographic variables were not associated with FA, but sp

Personality and eating disorders: a decade in review.

Personality traits have been implicated in the onset, symptomatic expression, and maintenance of eating disorders (EDs). The present article reviews literature examining the link between personality and EDs published within the past decade, and presents a meta-analysis evaluating the prevalence of personality disorders (PDs) in anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and binge eating disorder (BED) as assessed by self-report instruments versus diagnostic interviews. AN and BN are both consistently characterized by perfectionism, obsessive-compulsiveness, neuroticism, negative emotionality
