[Rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis. Review, update and report of a new case].

Mucormycosis is a fungal infection that often is fatal. It usually affects diabetic or immunocompromised patients. The site of onset generally is the nasal mucosa and the disease extends rapidly to the palate, orbit and brain. Early diagnosis is important and is based on the clinical features (diabetes, black eschar in nose, palate or face) and demonstration of the characteristic hyphae in the biopsy of the nasal mucosa or oral lesions. Treatment is based on systemic antifungal therapy, radical surgery, and medical management of the underlying disease. A case of rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormyc

[Orbital decompression in exophthalmos due to thyroid disease. Report of 69 cases].

Dysthyroid exophthalmos is due to mismatching of the orbit and its contents, essentially due to muscle enlargement, and, to a lesser degree, fat volumetric changes. Surgical treatment is designed to expand the orbital volume by bone removal or to reduce orbital contents by fat removal, or a combination of the two techniques. Our series consisted of 69 patients who underwent orbital decompression for proptosis, with osteotomy (12 cases) or associated with fat removal (57 cases). We obtained good results for all cases, and did not encounter any complications. Several factors now appear to play a

[Cervico-facial non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. Apropos of a case of orbital localization].

The orbital localization of the non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is not the more common site of presentation. The most classical sites in the head and neck are the cervical lymph nodes and Waldeyer's ring. The treatment is depending on the Staging and includes radiation therapy, chemotherapy and surgery or a combination of these modalities. We describe here an orbital localization of intermediate-grade. The clinical and pathological features are discussed, and the literature is summarized.

Successful treatment of orbital rhabdomyosarcoma in two infants using chemotherapy alone.

Two infants, 2 months and 13 months of age, were found to have orbital embryonal rhabdomyosarcomas (ERMS). Because of the adversities associated with either surgical exenteration or curative doses of radiation therapy, they were treated with chemotherapy alone. They survive disease-free 5 and 9 years after diagnosis with excellent cosmesis and normal vision. This approach may be suitable for similarly small (< 2 cm in diameter) ERMS in other sites.

Effects of bilateral orbital decompression by an endoscopic endonasal approach in dysthyroid orbitopathy.

AIMS: The efficacy of endoscopic endonasal orbital decompression in dysthyroid orbitopathy was analysed. METHODS: In 21 consecutive cases of bilateral operation short term (10 (SD 6) days after operation) and long term (156 (12) days after operation) results were recorded. RESULTS: Short term results showed that vision of the more affected eye improved from a mean of 0.35 to 0.59; vision improved in all but one eye which remained unchanged. In the fellow eyes mean visual acuity improved from 0.6 to 0.7; three of these eyes showed a decrease. Mean proptosis returned from 23.0 mm to 20.0 mm. A

Coronal suture transplantation to correct fronto-orbital constriction in metopic synostosis.

Surgical correction of non-syndromatic trigonocephaly is generally considered to be ideally performed at the age of 3 to 6 months. Conventional procedures include flattening of the forehead and straightening of the supraorbital bar by multiple osteotomies. Hypotelorbitism is generally not addressed. Long-term follow-up studies have shown that the orbital configuration does not improve spontaneously. Recently, some centres have proposed simultaneous correction of hypotelorbitism by a median widening osteotomy in the supraorbital bar. In our opinion, these procedures are indicated for patients o

Coexistent orbital and cerebellar venous anomalies in linear sebaceous naevus syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Orbital venous anomalies can result in significant morbidity and have been reported in association with other venous anomalies, some with the potential for serious complication. METHODS/RESULTS: We present a case of an orbital venous anomaly coexistent with a large cerebellar venous angioma and a linear sebaceous naevus. Clinical features, associations, complications and management principles are presented. CONCLUSION: Upon clinical recognition of an orbital venous anomaly, brain imaging and appropriate clinical assessment should be considered in light of the possibility of coexi

Use of demineralized bone implants in orbital and craniofacial reconstruction and a review of the literature.

A retrospective study and review of the literature was performed on the use of demineralized bone implants for the correction of orbital and craniofacial defects. Demineralized bone implants heal by endochondral osteogenesis, inducing a transformation of local cells, as well as by osteoconduction, similar to autogenous grafts. They induce the chemotaxis and transformation of mesenchymal cells into chondroblasts, followed by ossification. They also act as a scaffold, with bone resorption taking place simultaneous with bone formation. This study reviewed 21 patients and 31 orbits, in which demin

[Intraorbital conjunctival cyst after a penetrating orbital injury: a case report].

We report a case of intraorbital conjunctival cyst following a penetrating orbitocranial injury. The patient was a 28-year-old male who was hospitalized with exophthalmos, retrobulbar pain and upper gaze disturbance of his left eye. When he was 4 years old, a thin iron rod had penetrated intracranially through the inner angle of his left orbit. He was hospitalized and treated conservatively for about two weeks. The left eye ball was intact and visual acuity was normal, although bloody fluid had continuously flowed out from the left inner angle of the conjunctival wound for a few days. He had b

Distribution of a putative endothelial barrier antigen in the ocular and orbital tissues of the rat.

BACKGROUND: A rat endothelial barrier antigen (EBA) recognised by a monoclonal antibody has been shown to be expressed strongly by endothelial cells of brain capillaries possessing a blood-brain barrier and only weakly expressed by fenestrated brain vessels. METHODS: In this study immunocytochemical methods for light and electron microscopy were used to study EBA distribution in the eye and orbital tissues of the rat. RESULTS: Blood-ocular barrier vessels in the optic nerve, retina, iris, and some vessels in th choroid and ciliary body were immunopositive for EBA. By pre-embedding immunocyto

Anomalous intracranial venous drainage mimicking orbital or cavernous arteriovenous fistula.

A 9-year-old child presented with right eye swelling and bluish discoloration over the periorbital region. MR and CT displayed prominent vessels within the orbit and in the facial region, suggesting a carotid-cavernous fistula. Doppler ultrasound indicated the vascular engorgement was not secondary to a proximal arteriovenous shunt. Arteriography with its inherent time sequence image capability prompted the proper diagnosis of bilateral atresia of the sigmoid sinuses.

Orbital decompression for non-Graves' orbitopathy: a consideration of extended indications for decompression.

Orbital decompression is typically indicated for Graves' orbitopathy. Other causes of proptosis can also be safely and effectively addressed surgically with orbital decompression. Patients with prominent globes can have significant discomfort related to exposure keratopathy, lagophthalmos, and inefficient function of the globe-eyelid interface. We present six cases of non-Graves' proptosis that were addressed with orbital decompression. Indications for surgery included hypoplastic malar eminence with scleral show, enlarged globes, and congenital shallow orbits. Successful reduction of proptosi

Reconstruction of traumatic orbital floor defects using irradiated cartilage homografts.

The important role of orbital shape and volume reconstruction has been studied by many investigators. There is, however, no consensus on the material that should be used in the reconstruction of the orbit. Both biologic and alloplastic materials have been used, each with its advantages and disadvantages. Here we report our experience with irradiated costal cartilage homograft in the reconstruction of the orbital floor. Irradiated cartilage grafts were used in 31 patients with significant traumatic defects in the orbital floor. Long-term follow-up in 21 patients up to 48 months revealed no inci

Orbital cellulitis--an unusual presentation and late complication of severe facial trauma.

We report an unusual case of orbital cellulitis in a patient with only one seeing eye and severe facial asymmetry secondary to a road traffic accident twenty two years previously. Facial trauma sustained in the road traffic accident created continuity between the right orbit and the adjacent ethmoidal cells. The abnormal communication between the ethmoidal labyrinth and the right orbit rendered this patient highly susceptible to an orbital cellulitis from an adjacent paranasal sinus infection. However, this case is unusual with regard to the length of time that elapsed before such an infection

[Color Doppler imaging in the study of normal orbital vessels and its hemodynamics].

Color Doppler Imaging (CDI) is a recent development in ultrasonography, which can display simultaneously two dimensional images of structure and Doppler evaluation of blood flow. Using the technique, we examined 74 normal eyes. Orbital vessels including ophthalmic artery (OA), posterior ciliary arteries (PCA), center retinal artery (CRA) and central retinal vein (CRV) could be located to make Doppler spectrum analysis and quantification of hemodynamics. Blood velocity (Unit cm/s) in these vessels was obtained as following: the average peak systolic flow velocity for OA was 31.9 +/- 5.01; for P
