Olfactory ensheathing cells: Unique glial cells promising for treatments of spinal cord injury.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is generally the consequence of physical damage, which may result in devastating consequences such as paraplegia or paralysis. Some certain candidates for SCI repair are olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs), which are unique glial cells located in the transition region of the peripheral nervous system and central nervous system and perform neuron regeneration in the olfactory system throughout life. Culture studies have clarified many properties of OECs, but their mechanisms of actions are not fully understood. Successful results achieved in animal models showcased that

Severe Urosepsis Secondary to Xanthogranulomatous Pyelonephritis: A Case Report.

Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGP) is considered to be a rare variant of chronic pyelonephritis, which results in non-functioning kidneys in patients. The exact etiology of this disease is still unknown, and hence even its pathophysiology remains unclear. We present a case of a 27-year-old Saudi male patient who had been bed-bound with a known case of a congenital anomaly with severe kyphoscoliosis, bilateral lower limbs deformity with paraplegia, and a ventriculoperitoneal shunt since childhood. The patient was brought to the emergency department (ED) with right flank pain associated wi

Face-Computer Interface (FCI): Intent Recognition Based on Facial Electromyography (fEMG) and Online Human-Computer Interface With Audiovisual Feedback.

Patients who have lost limb control ability, such as upper limb amputation and high paraplegia, are usually unable to take care of themselves. Establishing a natural, stable, and comfortable human-computer interface (HCI) for controlling rehabilitation assistance robots and other controllable equipments will solve a lot of their troubles. In this study, a complete limbs-free face-computer interface (FCI) framework based on facial electromyography (fEMG) including offline analysis and online control of mechanical equipments was proposed. Six facial movements related to eyebrows, eyes, and mouth

Exosome miR-23a-3p from Osteoblast Alleviates Spinal Cord Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury by Down-Regulating KLF3-Activated CCNL2 Transcription.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord ischemia/reperfusion injury (SCIRI) is usually caused by spinal surgery or aortic aneurysm surgery and can eventually lead to paralysis or paraplegia and neurological dysfunction. Exosomes are considered as one of the most promising therapeutic strategies for SCIRI as they can pass the blood-spinal barrier. Previous studies have proved that exosomes secreted by osteocytes have a certain slowing effect on SCIRI. AIM: We aimed to explore the effect of osteoblast secreted exosomes on SCIRI. METHODS: First, neurons and osteoblasts were co-cultured under different conditio

SINO Syndrome Causative KIDINS220/ARMS Gene Regulates Adipocyte Differentiation.

Nonsense variants in KIDINS220/ARMS were identified as the main cause of spastic paraplegia, intellectual disability, nystagmus, and obesity (SINO) syndrome, a rare disease with birth defects in brachycephaly, neurological disorder, and obesity. The cause of neural cell dysfunction by KIDINS220/ARMS were extensively studied while the cause of obesity in SINO syndrome remains elusive. Here, we identified KIDINS220/ARMS as an adipocyte differentiation-regulating gene. A Chinese family, mother and her two sons, all showed severe symptoms of SINO syndrome. Stem Cell Models and Gene Targeting for Human Motor Neuron Diseases.

Motor neurons are large projection neurons classified into upper and lower motor neurons responsible for controlling the movement of muscles. Degeneration of motor neurons results in progressive muscle weakness, which underlies several debilitating neurological disorders including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), hereditary spastic paraplegias (HSP), and spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). With the development of induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) technology, human iPSCs can be derived from patients and further differentiated into motor neurons. Motor neuron disease models can also be generat

Refining Genotypes and Phenotypes in KCNA2-Related Neurological Disorders.

Pathogenic variants in KCNA2, encoding for the voltage-gated potassium channel Kv1.2, have been identified as the cause for an evolving spectrum of neurological disorders. Affected individuals show early-onset developmental and epileptic encephalopathy, intellectual disability, and movement disorders resulting from cerebellar dysfunction. In addition, individuals with a milder course of epilepsy, complicated hereditary spastic paraplegia, and episodic ataxia have been reported. By analyzing phenotypic, functional, and genetic data from published reports and novel cases, we refine and further d

The Incidence and Characteristics of Venous Thromboembolism in Neurocritical Care Patients: A Prospective Observational Study.

Risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), is presumed to be high for neurologic intensive care unit (NICU) patients. However, exact incidences of VTE have yet to be reported. In this prospective observational study, we consecutively enrolled 126 neurocritical care patients who had an NICU stay ≥1 week with paralysis and/or unconsciousness. All patients received DVT prevention strategies. Patients were screened for VTE after 1 week of hospitalization, using venous ultrasonography and computed tomography pulmonary angiography. Followi

Experiences of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation following non-myeloablative conditioning regimen in severely comorbid patients with myelofibrosis: case series with a patient presenting with extensive extramedullary hematopoiesis.

We have performed allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) using a reduced intensity conditioning regimen for curative management of advanced myelofibrosis (MF). However, allo-HCT is rarely considered for elderly or patients with severe comorbidities due to high transplantation-related mortality. In those patients, an alemtuzumab-based non-myeloablative (NMA) conditioning regimen followed by stem cell transplantation could be a possible treatment that has been tried in sickle cell anemia showing stable mixed chimerism and improvement of the disease. However, it is uncertain whe
